I've read Hara's book. It's an interesting narrative from the Japanese perspective of WWII in the Pacific. From the early days when the IJN easily dealt with the USN and seemed unbeatable. To how things changed with the number and quality of American ships and crews as they began to turn the tables on the Japanese. Radar in particular ended the dominance of the IJN at night. In fact radar saw a squadron of Japanese destroyers under Hara's command pummeled by a pair of USN destroyers the Japanese never even saw.

I despised the Japanese of WW2 but it’s sad their soldiers starved to death filled with diseases! Many were normal citizens drafted into the military like me to Vietnam! I didn’t want to kill people that did nothing to me! The Japanese built subs as fast as they could toward the end of the war to deliver supplies to the soldiers and Japan. It was too late and failed miserably. They built 2 giant subs and had 3 more they stopped building as they didn’t have the resources. The 2 subs had hangers on top with several bombers each and were headed to the Panama Canal to destroy it but were called back to protect Japan.

The U.S. had cut the Japanese off from purchasing oil (along with scrap iron) because Japan invaded & was occupying Indochina. The Netherlands, in charge of Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) oil, had for the same reason halted shipment of that commodity to Japan. And the British, in control of Middle East oil, cut them off too. There was, at the time, nowhere else for Japan to go for that essential fuel - so they started the war to procure it, ultimately through their taking of the Dutch East Indies.

@@scottjones1109 get it right, was the cover story Japan used , after the war in papers and interviews the IJN WANTED TO START A WAR, IN 1933, WITH THE USA, 7 years before FDR imposed an oil embargo on Japan for their invasion of MANCHURIA. In 1933 the IJA won out over the JAPANESE navy by order of HIRAHITO. Several books by both sides prove this. Yamamoto had already planned an INVASION of the USA because he was orderd to do so, before the oil embargo. What you wrote is a 100% Japanese cover story.

@@miketrusky476 You seem to know something about this. It doesn't surprise me that Yamamato had worked on war plans during that period in case of a conflict with the U.S. but a planned INVASION of the United States? Invasion-wise, are you talking about the continental United States, some of the Pacific Islands under our control, or both? And just what was it specifically Japan expected to long term accomplish by invading us, if they had, in 1933? Certainly they couldn't expect to overrun Hawaii & our west coast & successfully occupy them indefinitely.

@@scottjones1109 Scott, Japan had planned to invade Hawaii after their hopeful victory at Midway, that loss, stopped that. JAPANESE subs shelled the west coast off Oregon and I believe northern California. It was hushed up at the time, never could find details of damage, am sure it is available somewhere. After the war JAPAN said the subs started fires and loss of life.

@@miketrusky476 The Battle of Midway took place in June of 1942 . And the minor shelling of the California & Oregon coasts by Japanese submarines occurred early in 1942. So tell me, what about 1933 & your statements about Japanese military planning & intentions relative to a possible war with the United States that year? You didn't answer any of the questions I asked you about that .

Had Japan followed Hara's course by only attacking the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and French Indochina they would have solved their raw material requirements and likely would have avoided war with the US and Great Britain. The Netherlands and France were already occupied and in no position to defend their colonies.

💯. Japan anticipated that the US would strategically attack Japan if they attacked the Brits & Dutch only. They failed to read the U.S. to understand that the American people would not go to war over British and Dutch colonial control.

Nope. They had access to that petroleum and the resources to move it to where it was needed before starting a war. Thereafter Japan "owned" the petroleum and had no way to get it to where it was required. Trade worked wonders; war, not so much.

I am far from an expert on Japan and the actions that preceded the war in the Pacific. I understand that the government of Japan was warlike and had become controlled by the military in the months leading up to Pearl Harbor. It is my opinion that even if Japan was able to get those raw materials at some point war would have still happened. In fact, when I think about Adm Yamamoto's willingness to attack and to do quickly he understood this and wanted to cause apathy back in the US. One of my HS history teachers was a Marine who most likely would have been part of an attack on the homeland had the nuclear option not happened. I am 65 so these lessons happened almost 50 years ago. He said while in school back in the 1950s he had a chance to become friends with a man who was alive during the 1930s in Japan. He said this man told him the Army and the Navy spent most of the 1930s feuding with each other over their desire to become a world power. If even half of the things I have been told are correct there were way too many hotheads in Japan to have avoided war. As Neville Chamberlain learned you can't negotiate with a government set to become a world power. I suspect FDR and the US SoS knew this and that is why they held firm.

Hard to say. Japan had already been fighting for over two years in China, and the warlords under Tojo would’ve demanded they took all of southeast Asia - Burma, French Indochina and the Dutch East Indies. That would’ve secured oil, rubber, tin and other needed raw materials. Would they have started a war with the US, Britain and possibly their ally the USSR so they could take HK, Singapore and the Philippines? Very few raw materials there…we’ll never know.@@THE-michaelmyers

The Japanese did not embrace a convoy system to protect their merchant marine that transported raw materials or moved troops and equipment till later in the war when U.S submarines were crippling their supply lines and even when the Japanese finally tried to address the problem ,did not allocate many destroyers for the job and still considered protecting the convoys low priority and thought destroyers were of more value in the offensive role with the fleet

"bombed whales" When Task Force 317 steamed south during the Falklands War, the RN ASW crews were understandably nervous about Argentine subs and thus adopted a "better safe than sorry" attitude to any submerged sonar contact. So the first scores of TF 317 were probably whales.

It wasn't. Hara went on to command a cruiser in the fleet sailing to Okinawa and destiny along with the battleship Yamato. The entire fleet was sunk except for one destroyer. Hara's cruiser was sunk and he had to swim for it for several hourse before being picked up by a USN ship and made prisoner. I read Hara's excellent book a couple of years ago ---my first introduction to the memoirs of a Japanese officer during WWII. Several such memoirs have appeared recently on You Tube, and I have found them all interesting.
