The WW2 pre-war contempt of the Japanese by the Americans, and the countervailing contempt of them by the Japanese was incredible. The U.S. Navy refused to believe the Japanese had the wherewithal to attack our fleet at Pearl Harbor. This was in spite of the fact that it was known they had a substantial fleet of tankers and routinely practiced refueling at sea. Further, the Japanese had a prior history of attacking their enemy's fleet at its home base on an unannounced, preemptory basis. An objective analysis of the overreaching wartime situation would have shown the Japanese' only hope for winning a conflict was to go for the American jugular and knock out their fleet right off the bat. It was known the Americans had 3 aircraft carriers in their Pacific fleet, whereas the Japanese had 10.There were 6 large fleet carriers vs our 3. We had only one carrier in the Atlantic Ocean. We grossly underestimated their ability to build high-quality airplanes, and their ability to turn out world-class air crews for them. Conversely, the Japanese believed our navy, our people were soft-minded and did not possess a fighting spirit. Never underestimate your opponent. They thought we'd roll over and play dead if they struck a strong blow at the beginning of a war. Again, never underestimate your opponent, nor overestimate your own abilities.

You are correct. But to gage the antipathy of the opponents to one another, look at how the prisoners of war were treated by the Japanese and the Americans. The USA treated the Japanese POW well. The Japanese treated American POW's like subhuman scum.

It's odd that the Japanese were surprised the Americans bypassed their island base and island hopped. The Western Pacific is full of small islands. Plus there are the Southern islands and Philippines. A little island is not like a wall commanding the surrounding seas. Once the air and naval power are depleted, how can it project any power?

Which is why MacArthur never needed to invade Philippines. I mean no military reason, just his ego.

The photo has been manipulated. The first two ships are both numbered "20".

It must have been really jarring for Japanese that only heard official propaganda during the war to learn about how it had actually played out long after the war

On the thumbnail, it looks like there's two number "20" ships, though it's likely an AI composition error, and I'm not sure the third isn't a number "20" ship? ;-)

To anyone "watching" this - it's the same photo throughout. There's no video. Also, it starts in the middle. OK as part of a book on tape, but it's not a "video" in any way.

The Japanese taught the U.S. Navy how to fight at night in waters off Guadalcanal. Do not start shooting your guns until your torpedoes have time to reach the enemy. The Americans learned. It doesn't seem like their opponents did likewise or understand or knew what to do when the enemy used their tactics against them.

japan was full of itself. They were convinced of their intellectual and military superiority, and their Naval hubris stemmed from their victory over the Russian 2nd pacific squadron, which, in truth, was nothing to brag about given the clown car that was the Russian navy. Aggressors always become convinced of their magnificence, because other nations strive to avoid war, and long periods of peace result in amateur armies and navies to defend themselves. So aggression is always a sucker punch. But war rapidly realigns priorities and competence of the defenders always improves, and then war comes down to nothing buy profligacy. Who can AFFORD to keep at it longer. Any qualified economist could have told Japan that they were destined to lose. Their mistake was in thinking the US was SO racist towards Asians, that it would not send its sons to die defending Asians. During the war, Japan built 8 fleet carriers. The US built 26. Japan built an additional 11 escort carriers. The US built 122 escort carriers. No amount of military brilliance matters. War is a potlatch. Whoever is willing and able to throw away more men and materiel eventually wins.
