Free speech, like any other fundamental value of the western world comes from Christianity. Religion is the foundation of the culture, culture is the foundation for the society. Once you, Irish people, rejected Christianity it was only a question of time when all the fruits of it would go away also. It's called "the cut flower effect". Enjoy it while it lasts!
