Remember the scene at the cemetary? When Nate, the team captain, passed away years later from cancer he was buried in the memorial garden next to his 6 teammates who died in the plane crash.

"I'm not a player." "We are Marshall. We'll take anybody." Fun Fact: Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty later starred together in The Hurt Locker (2008). Location Location Fact: In the 1970s, Marshall played their home football games at Fairfield Stadium, which was demolished in early 2004. Herndon Stadium in Atlanta was used as the stand-in for Fairfield Stadium. Historical Fact: Southern Airways Flight 932 was a chartered DC-9, from Kinston, NC (ISO) to Huntington-Tri-State/Milton Airport (HTS) in Ceredo, West Virginia. The plane was carrying 37 team members, eight members of the coaching staff, 25 boosters, four flight crew, and one charter company employee. On November 14, 1970, at 7:35 PM, the plane crashed into a hill just short of Tri-State Airport, killing all 75 on board. Because it was the team's only chartered flight of the season, many prominent citizens were on board, including a city councilman, a state legislator, and four of the city's six physicians. In a report issued April 14, 1972, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the crash was "the result of a descent below Minimum Descent Altitude during a non precision approach under adverse operating conditions, without visual contact with the runway environment. . . .two most likely explanations (for the greater descent) are (a) improper use of cockpit instrumentation data, or (b) an altimetry system error."

Been wanting someone to react to this forever!!!! I grew up in Huntington, WV. This horrible tragedy was one I heard stories about my entire life. As a child, I never understood the tragedy. I never fully will, but when I could hear the "We Are Marshall" chanting scene being filmed from my home, I understood what a beautiful and strong community of people have been built from this loss. Thanks for paying attention to it!

I enjoyed the post. I was a member of the Xavier team...#75... that lost in the final seconds of the game. I have had the pleasure of revisiting Huntington and participating in the celebration of that win over my alma mater. So many wonderful people and such a special place and moment I shared with my wife.

Thank you for actually doing this. I'm from Huntington, and my grandfather was a firefighter at the crash. This event affects the city to this day.

You're welcome! I can't imagine how terribly hard that was for your grandfather being at that scene. I mean, he was a firefighter so he has seen a lot but this was a horrible tragedy and so many young lives lost!

@@fjeresomereactions People forget about because we're a small town. I honestly hate to say this, but it puts things in perspective. In my grandfather's exact words: "We eventually stopped trying to identify bodies, and started putting together body parts." That's the six graves of the unidentified.

The man who played the role of Morehead State's head coach in Marshall's first game after the tragedy was the real life Red Dawson.

If you weren't aware, actress Kate Mara's family is part of Football Royalty; her dad is VP of the New York Giants, and her mom's family are the founders and owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers. She's also the sister of actress Rooney Mara.

A friend of mine was attending Marshall during the filming. He’s an extra in the game crowd shots and the shot outside the presidents office. He’s got a picture with Matthew lol

I live here in Huntington Marshall class of 2019 live about a block from the stadium now , go to almost every home game and travel to a few away ganes each year

there is another story very much like this but in England and with a soccer team called the busby babies. its about the liverpool football team i think they were returning from playing a team in the European cup and there plane went down if you have ever heard of the liverpool moto which is YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE it comes from this event.

@@fjeresomereactionsthe restaurant BOONES doesn’t exist. It’s really JIM’s SPAGHETTI. JFK visited there as well as a lot of celebrities. The owner’s daughter told me to film there they would have had to have shutdown for 2 weeks and raised the ceiling. She didn’t want to do that and was miffed that they didn’t call the restaurant Jim’s in the movie. She can come off abrasive so maybe pissed them off. Who knows?
