Arecibo in Puerto Rico was an incredible site to see. The day those cables broke, was extremely sad. If you ever go to Puerto Rico, you can still visit the site. They had quite a bit to look at and watch the last time I was there. Pictures of it, don't do it justice or give you a real sense of how big it was. You can see a very cool video from James Bond 007 Golden Eye. They did a fight scene on the cat walks above it, where the transmitting equipment hung above the dish. That fell, and destroyed the dish and the equipment that was all custom built that was suspended above the dish. There is video's of it falling if you are curious after watching this!

The thing they always miss in the question of life elsewhere is timing. Considering the age of the universe, we are searching for life that exists at a specific time - I e. right now. Life exists for a blink of a cosmic eye and it has come and gone countless times. This makes it even less likely to find. Even if life does exist now, it would need to be technologically advanced. Again, the odds.

There is an interesting backstory on that one. The "discovery" wasn't discredited until the mid-1970s. In 1966 this was still believed to be valid. But the concept used by the discovery was absolutely correct, and it is one of the techniques used to detect exoplanets to this very day.
