Since the timeline in the cinematic trailer is about the past, and Darius is in Frejlord, it seems Swain is part of the conquering warband in Ionia trying to bring back Riven as she has the runic sword that belongs to the Black Rose. Remember, that the reason the Black Rose is after Ambessa is because she stole something from the Black Rose which is the powers Mel has now (Chosen of the Wolf).

Elise is noble from house Kythera (noxian nobility) she is centuries old after a tragic homicide attempt from her vile husband that she survived, she was left with scars and damage to her body . She was the leader of the house, but because of that she took a step back for a few weeks until Leblanc met her and offered her to join the black rose with the promise of her beauty be restored . After a while she was feeling comfortable to go without veil (she used to wear that to hide the damage made by her husband) she went to the shadow isles to retrieve a magickal artifact but she got bitten by a spider god and the artifact pierced her heart that resulted in her becoming half spider with powers but also beautiful.

I think Meesh's reaction is 1,000% fair to be honest. I luckily got to watch this live before work and by the end, there was a lot of people getting the feeling that this cinematic really feels mid at first. It likely is one of Riot's cinematics that get better the more you watch it. (PS: You've seen Trundle animated for just a bit before in 'Ryze: Call of Power'.)

Firstly, we open with an image of a wolf which represents one half of Kindred. This is in reference to Ambessa blood, sweat and Tears because Mel has “The Mark of the chosen/The Mark of the Wolf.” Also the opening starts on the same exact beach that Ambessa survived on, you can look at it shot for shot, I think it is on Rockrund, a beach near noxus. Next part shows Katarina attending a ball dance. For some context, League released some Noxus skins for Ezreal, Renata Glasc (the most powerful chembaron from Zaun), Thresh, and some others. The reasoning is that the “Black Rose” apparently has invited some other strong suitors to a party, hoping to gain their pledge. We don’t see them here (it is to be assumed they all might make teases or appearances in the next series), but Katarina snuck her way into the dance. Katarina is an assassin for Noxus, very skilled. Next we have Darius, a young darius going up against young Trundle, a troll from the Frejlord. Now we technically don’t know if Noxus at this point is attempting to push in Frejlord or if actually the Trolls came too far down on purpose. The Trolls of Frejlord are close with Lissandra who can make ice-borne weapons and true ice weapons. To keep it short, Trundle’s club is not “True” ice, if it was, no mere mortal can actually touch the weapon, they literally die if they touch the weapon. But “Ice-borne” weapons are still very strong weapons, which is why you see the weapon start to freeze Darius' hand and arm. The gate that Mel is walking up to is the opening Arch to Noxus and in the far distance is the home capital, Immortal Bastion. It actually is the largest standing building in all of Runeterra.. Next as Katarina is attempting to kill her target, we see Elise pop out who is a spider. She also got invited to the Noxus ball, presumably protecting someone. If I am correct, Elise is more of a shadow Isle’s champ, but she is part of the Black Rose because Leblanc saved her and she became mutated after being bitten by a Spider-demi god called “Vilemaw.”. At the very end, we officially get to see Leblanc, it is confirmed this is her official VGU (Visual Game Update) and as of right now, lore accatue appearance. Along with Leblanc we get to see Vladamir, he actually used to be human MANY centuries ago, but he magically altered himself, absorbed the power of darkin and has been using blood magic to keep himself young. Vlad and Leblanc established The Black Rose centuries ago and they work from the shadows. There is technically a third person, but we do not know who that is yet. We again hear reference to “opportunity washed up on our shore = Mel” (again showing a wolf because she has the mark of the wolf from Kindred) The calamity they are talking about is the return of Mordekaiser, which the black rose is trying to prevent. To keep it short, basically all of Runeterra does not want the mofo returning and he is actually banished underneath the immortal bastion (Also much of Runeterra doesn’t actually know who he is because when he existed was centuries ago, except for Leblanc and Vlad and any other people part of The Black Rose organization. As per usual, the black are considered “evil”, but in their evil doings, they are trying to prevent a worse event from happening as referenced right above. The very last thing people are Guessing it’s either a reference to Aatrox sword, or Naafiri dagger, both of which are Darkin weapons. Hopefully that breaks everything down for ya lol. On a personal note I am mixed about this trailer. On one hand, it stands amazingly on its own, and it’s basically teasing their next series. Anybody correct if I am wrong, but Riot Games announced that this year, they would be resetting their seasons back to season 1 (thus why it’s called season 1 cinematic) and changing their format, since league came out in 2010, every year is considered 1 season = 1 year, thus they always do a top tier cinematic for launch. (this year would’ve been season 15 cinematic) . But this year, they are going to reset seasons, and “chapters” throughout the season, meaning they were upping their cinematics now to 3 in a year. My point being, I am slightly sad they didn’t do their other animation. I don’t know if Riot Games is just going to go full hard with Fortiche on everything moving forward, but compared to previous season trailers, just a slight let down. But if it wasn’t for comparison, it’s an amazing trailer and if we get two more this year, that would be awesome. They definitely let out a lot of champs people wanted such as Draven, Riven, Rell, Swain, Mordekaiser, Samira, Kled, and some others. I feel like for some very die hard fans of just league, it could start splitting up the player base/fan base, just slightly. I personally end up leaning towards loving this trailer though, I love the freaking music. I don’t think anybody expected to see Trundle or Frejlord and I think once we get into the Noxus show, they are definitely setting up all their puzzle pieces to then expand everywhere else, Shurima, Ionia, Frejlord, Demacia, etc. I also just wanted to point out if people haven’t thought about it, Katarina is a VERY skilled assassin, not only can elise transform into a spider whenever (Idk why she stops, but it’s a trailer) but to take on two arms, plus her spider arms, that takes some mad skill and training. Again I know it’s a trailer, but katarina is really bad ass, just like Darius, embodies much of Noxus willpower, strength, and skill.

So, for some context, the Black Rose hosted a party where they invited prominent outsiders to join, potentially scouting new recruits. Elise was hosting the party and Kat infiltrated to kill a target. During Mel's empath vision, the soldiers who attack her are likely Grey Legion, Undead Noxians resurrected with blood magic by the Black Rose to fight. Sion is either the first or greatest example of them. We still don't know what LeBlanc is attempting to do, but the symbol is vague enough to be either Darkin (who Vladamir orignally learned/stole the techniques of Blood Magic from or the Watchers in Freljord)

10:35 Elise is a Noxian member of the Black Rose who was "blessed" by a godlike entity on the Shadow Isles and now she serves the Vilemaw as well as Leblanc. Most of her lore is depicting her luring/seducing people to follow her into the Shadow Isles to feed Vilemaw, or being tasked by Leblanc to head to the Shadow Isles to find artifacts Leblanc can use for her plans. Elise is the only one who can do this for LeBlanc, because as a chosen of Vilemaw, the Isles allow Elise basically free reign without the other undead posing much of a hindrance.

I personally love that not everyone has the 'wow' factor. Them being more human really makes me more intreagued about their personality and story. Elise looked 10/10 for me yet I still would like to see her just for her looks rather than her story. Vlad on the other hand looked a bit weird but that draws me in way more. I want to see more of him, learn to love him for his story and get more excited about how he looks BECAUSE of who he is. Those characters excite me the most. For example Walter White; in the first episode I was a little dissapointed to have a bald old guy as the main character but as the show went on he blew me away and now I love his looks because they are just so him. Pretty is just a temporary high imo.

As to why Elise is a Noxian living in the Shadow isle is because of her dark ties to the Shadow Isles as she worships a Spider God. She is a high ranking member of the Black Rose, an important person from oldest family in Noxus. She also is so needed by LeBlanc because I think she keeps a portal open or something? a connection to deep magic that LeBlanc wants access to.

I have to salut Riot for deciding to take a different direction with the season start cinematic this year. The others are visually stunning and I hope to see another with that style again. Lore context: Vladimir is a distance uncle of Viego. This is why he looks more like Viego here plus he's always changing his look from young to old. Also Elise's lore might get retcon since her lore is based on old Shadow isle lore before Viego became a thing.

I agree wih Meesh, as a LOL player this is the first cinematic I don't get goosebumps. It feels more toned down and much less epic than the others. It feels like just a teaser instead of a full cinematic because they keep exploring stuff without actually diving in. The Kata and Elise fight was INSANE tho, the animation was crazy.
