Well we have officially decided to shut down our market farm and farm store. This is a decision that I’ve wrestled with for the past couple of years and here’s why we ultimately decided to close our doors to our farm. But I am excited about the future of this channel and the content we plan on making about homesteading. I am passionate about teaching others to grow and produce as much as their own food as possible. I look forward to you being a part of this journey #marketfarm #marketfarming #marketgarden #marketgardening #smallscalefarming #farmstead #homestead #homesteading

Before people starting bashing me in the comments- when I said “people shouldn’t buy from local farmers” my point I was trying to make is that people should become less dependent on farmers and more self sufficient in growing a large portion of their food themselves. I didn’t articulate it like I wanted to. I’m 100% in support of small farmers and buying from local farmers. But we also need to learn how to grow as much food as possible for ourselves and families. And from there, buy and source things from local farmers when possible

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Don't pay attention to judgment from other people. Listen to the voice inside and go with it. People need to learn more about growing their own food. Our processed food and big ag are literally killing us. It's one of the reasons I am supporting RFK Jr. Regnerative farming is one of the centerpieces of his campaign and we need it as part of the plan to end the chronic disease epidemic in this country.

Yeah God wants us to be free and growing your own food is freedom. If most people are wage slaves and buy from farmers we will not be free. We all need to do our part and share and barter with our neighbors which at the end of the day, creates a strong community. I agree with your perspective.

I don't blame you. Its tough when so many poeple choose the corporate grocery store. If our economy was 100% local, you'd probably be feeling much more motivated and have more success you can't walk away from.

Market gardening is HARD. I'm twelve years in and the way I started doesn't look anything like the way it is going. Started doing what you are doing, switched to basically only growing brassicas and carrots. I quit doing summer markets completely because farming in South Carolina in the summer is literal hell. I've told you before, Tanner, that you should monocrop something easy on your land, and just sell that. Fields of broccoli sell themselves and are low maintenance. To anyone wanting to get into farming, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are better starting points than lettuce. Lettuce is too much work. I quit growing it in bulk for that reason. It will slowly drive you mad.
@tannerfarmstead
@tannerfarmstead Ай бұрын
Agree to disagree on that. I’d have to sell broccoli wholesale to make that work. No way I’d be able to sell that much broccoli. Even if I grew 2 acres of broccoli the numbers don’t add up. Pound for pound for the space spring mix is the money maker. Yes it’s hard work but without that crop the vast majority of small farms aren’t profitable. Even if they are growing broccoli and lots of other crops spring mix and microgreens are the foundation.
@AnenLaylle
@AnenLaylle Ай бұрын
@@tannerfarmstead The price per pound for broccolini (floret broccoli) is $4-8 dollars, while the price per pound for spring mix is $4-7. PER CHAT GPT. I think these numbers are reasonable from my fifteen years of experience. I get around 2.5 pounds of broccolini per plant spaced at a foot. Even on a small scale this is more profitable than lettuce, plain and simple. You are not making 16 dollars per foot on lettuce. There will also be less competition, from my experience selling at markets. Everyone can grow lettuce if they try. Broccoli, not so much. Hence the higher price per pound. To further prove my point, the price of quality lettuce seed is double the price of quality broccolini seed (try BC1611 and Burgundy compared to any Salanova). I can process a 16th of an acre of broccolini in 2 hours by myself. It would take me 2 days to harvest that much lettuce. I learned to farm at Clemson University, not on KZbin. You can have extremely profitable small scale farms without ever touching lettuce. I have several friends who farm less than an acre and would never dream of wasting time on lettuce. Best of luck in your pivot to a homesteading channel. I really wish you'd have stuck with the farming. I could have taught you a thing or two. For fun I asked CHAT GPT which crop makes more money, and funnily enough it agrees with me: CHAT GPT: In general, broccolini might offer higher profit margins due to its specialty nature and higher selling price, but it comes with increased growing complexity and risks. Lettuce, with its consistent demand and quicker turnover, might offer steadier profits but typically at lower margins.

Thanks for making this video. We battled with making the same decision recently. While everyone looks at us like we failed, we actually found peace in calling it quits and hope you do too. Market gardening was our chance to live 100% off the land, but selling sucked all the life out of our passion. We homestead so we don’t have to rely on anyone, but when we market garden we had to rely on the community to support us and that defeated our vision. We much rather keep our normal day jobs for income and only grow food for ourself.

I am also scaling back. I've been selling at Farmers Market for a year and a half. I'm not selling produce but edible plants. Was to ill to work. 2 surgeries later, I'm partially recovered and ready to re-enter the workforce. Not quiting, just changing crops & priorities.

Time is short brother. Grow enough for your family and some for the community. Maybe promote all those around you to grow so when hard times come and they will come your community will still be strong and not have to go into town for the bread and soup line.

I'm so sorry, i wish more restaurants and schools sourced local in season produce and meats. It's so sad to order a salad in prime tomato season only to get a tomato from California instead of locally. P.s. we get take out maybe once a month.... So not a regular occurrence.

Amen Brother! I hear you 100%. I often struggle with the idea of pulling the plug on market gardening as well. My wife and I both work full time jobs, and what started as a hobby has turned into a full on business. Although it’s rewarding and definitely profitable after 5 years of growth, spending time with my daughter and having a little more free time is definitely appealing. Time will tell for me I guess, but happy you’re doing what makes you happy! Best of luck!
