I'm pro no till from an ecological perspective but how do you grow wheat/corn etc or like how do you garden in areas that are so remote you can't just ship 5 tonnes of compost to do no till with?

Over time you are going to kill the tree that you have your compost pile against. Soil will be too hot.

Truth is, you really have to try to have a farm to be able to homestead. You did the market garden gig first and you learned so much that now it all seems natural. New people just have to make tons of mistakes first. There is no other way around it. Learning farming is like learning math. You have to do it, get the solution wrong, try again, and finally solve it. With that being said, this video is spot on in what you should focus on messing up and figuring out first. You ain't surviving off of vegetables. Meat is far more important and sheep are where it is at. Great video. My only critique is that if you are new, you will fail! Helene destroyed my Market Farm I have been running for 15 years. It's gone now. Obliterated. I'm a bit salty. Sorry guys. Farm on. I lost at least 18,000 in 48 hours without being in Vegas. Farming is a gamble. We are throwing the towel in. Going the homestead route. We'll sell any extra we have.

I agree! Failure is 1000% a part of the process of learning. And it takes years of it. Thanks for encouragement about the video! Very sorry for the loss on your market farm. I know that’s tough.. I’m glad it’s given you clarity though on what to do moving forward

I would also include energy-rich foods like tubers. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and, in warmer climates, cassava and plantains or bananas. Protein is essential for protein and fat and fruits for vitamins and minerals, but to work, you need energy too. Also, you can raise chickens without grains.
@tannerfarmstead

For sure those are definitely good additions. Laying hens can be raised free range without grains but broilers are gonna be tough to raise without grain

Do you use the middle of the compost to heat your water? We have added a 100 ft. black commercial hose in the middle of the compost. The water comes out HOT.

If I could go back in time, I would have bought the piece of land in WV that was for sale when I was in my 20s. It was in the mountains, and my folks talked me out of it, saying that the well would always be in danger of running dry. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't let people talk me out of my dreams so easily.

It’s never too late, I’m daydreaming of a homestead, buying cheaper land is the first thing to look for, even if we can’t afford it right now, the stars align when one has a goal or thought in mind.

I went on the carnivore diet nearly 2yrs ago and love that I no longer need any fruit or vegetables. Sheep and chickens are our mainstays and we buy some beef and pork for variety. Meat & eggs easily sustains us along with salt and water. It was refreshing to find your video focusing on the ruminate animals instead of the garden aspect most consider so vital. There is absolutely no need for carbs in our diet.
