Solar panel sales guy said, "We can cut your electric bill in half!" My electric bill is $110 per month. I said, "So you're going to save me $55 a month? That's $660 a year, and at that rate it will take 30 years to recoup my investment." He hung up.

I've been in financial trouble before. Now, I own my car, I own my house and I have zero debt. I don't have a ton of money, but it is cheap to live if you have no debt. My rule of thumb, don't jeopardize my savings, and if I can't easily pay cash for it, I can't afford it. Also, just because I can afford it doesn't mean I need it; needs v. wants. The only bills I get are utilities; I can't tell you how good that feels.

I wonder why the husband didn't call in - why did he let her do it, is he angry at her for impulse-spending, does he feel ashamed for buying the solarpanels, is he reluctant to admit they need to start anew? Such emotional aspects need to be discussed kindly, unjudgementally, and come up on the table and be solved together.

Yes, not only are the cost of the solar panels not cost effective in reducing their power bill but they have to be removed to replace or fix the roof. I've always wondered..is it better to do what you love and make less? Or do what you dont particularly enjoy but it makes you more money?

I rather love what i do and make less. Unfortunately I make more on what I do but I'm not happy. But the money i make does help us saves. Savings is important to us since were not in our 30's anymore.

Solar panels Ha! I knew a woman who took out a loan to get them. I asked her how this would save her money. She went silent.

These solar panel guys are tough I can see how people give in. I've talked to them and they have a response for every objection you can think of.

Of course they do, solar is a no brainer. The only things standing in between solar panels and homeowners are politics and stubborn people who don’t want change and have no understanding of finances.

Getting on a plan and sticking to it is so important. You have to make tough choices and sacrifice, but when you finally pay off all the debt you feel so much different about life. Honestly, try it. I will never go back into debt.

3100 a month? My dad makes 2500 a month and he LIVES WITHIN his means and is fine except he doesn’t have debt other then maybe taxes. Also it’s cheaper to renovate your own home then to pay someone else.

These people cannot afford to sell the home especially with the current home and apartment prices. They should consider renting out a room or their basement for extra cash. She needs to deliver pizzas or driving UBER/lyft in the evening when hubby is home and on the weekends.
