On shows like this but in peron I find it so annoying when people ask that question when you first meet them. I never ask people what they or their spouse does. People make assumptions about you when they know your job and guesstimate your income status so I never tell people what we do lest they think we are rich. I always let the the other person ask. Another option for Paul, if he’s as articulate in writing as he is speaking, is to contractually grant write for the nonprofit he currently works for. He would need to negotiate it so that he gets paid an hourly rate for the grant writing, which is on top of his current salary, but he could easily double his income, not have to change jobs, and still have time left over to spend time with his family if he organizes his time well. Further, doing that also puts the nonprofit in a better financial position so it can pay him more.

If he wants to spend time with the baby, find a remote job that makes more money and can be done in the evenings. He takes care of the child during the day while she works. She takes care of the child in the evening while he works. No child care costs. I can't imagine asking a woman who has just had a child to work full time and go to school even part time. If she wants the masters she needs to look at things like taking classes in the summer, and/or having the school district pay for classes as "continuing ed".

I didn’t hear that she was paying for the grad degree. She’s a young teacher. She might be required to have a masters and is certainly required to do much continuing Ed, but the school district might be paying a chunk.

The issue is in general most people make a decent salary, but people Don’t live within their means. The key is to live within your means and you’ll avoid over inflated stress. My parents made less than $40,000 combined and they were able to pay the house in 15 years and the only debt they had was the house. My dad bought a used car and they didn’t have any other debt.

Sometimes it is a hard decision to make. People need to ask themselves if they want to pursue their passion or have a family. Unfortunately, if your passion keeps you under paid, then forego the family. Or have a family but get a job where you can support them. Unfortunately, in life many times it is an either or scenario.

The racket that we have that lures kids into huge student debts is absolutely ridiculous! There are many avenues to an accredited college degree that don't do that to you. I have financed 5 (five) college degrees in my long life, with absolutely no debt. Mine, my husband's (help of GI bill), 2 daughters, my MA and currently my Phd. I know how to do this. The way college is marketed is a total money-making racket.
