The most powerful music is that which you listen to in your formative years, once you're mostly developed as a person it doesn't have the same effect. It's not to say that you won't like new songs as you get older or that they won't become the soundtrack to certain chapters of your life but generally as you become more emotionally rounded/stable you become less receptive to new music

I understand Smiths KSI point about him being sort of 'artificially' successful in music, but at the end of the day it's more a sign of just how progressive and accessible the music industry has become for people, which is a great thing. Social media and the like brings exposure opportunities to a huge amount of talented individuals who might have otherwise been ignored, it's no longer the music industry fat-cats strictly dictating what we hear.
@JeskidoYT4 жыл бұрын
It is anyone's game. Tiktok will be in the Grammys soon
@SaintPhoenixx4 жыл бұрын
People have this attitude about music and then say that modern art is shit. If KSI pretending to rap and just saying pointless words that rhyme and getting to number 1 through marketing forces, then Tracey Emin is a far better artist than Van Gogh, Monet and Michelangelo. Success is now accessible due to getting lucky, going viral or being pushed by the powers that be, not due to being the most talented and that is what I think Smith is annoyed at. Sure music does evolves every generation but KSI would never be considered a global superstar musician 15 years ago, let alone 40. It just wouldn't be possible.
@FerricWolf4 жыл бұрын
Just to add, I don't think KSI necessarily deserves to be high in the charts, the music industry still has lots of evolving to do in today's social media driven world to make sure it doesn't just become filled with social media stars with mediocre talent. I'm simply stating that we're heading in the right direction, even if artists like KSI have to be a lesson learned along the way. Not trying to shit on KSI, he's just doing something that clearly works in the music industry rn and that's totally fair game. It's the underlying system that needs to change, not the social media stars.
@Khrayfish4 жыл бұрын
@@FerricWolf How is it a sign of a more progressive and accessible music industry? This KSI example proves the exact opposite, now, it's only those already rich and famous who are able to access the music industry. You need to research the consistently degrading Indie music scene to realise how inaccessible it has gotten over the past few decades.

This was a great, balanced and authentic conversation I didn't expect to pay quite so much attention to; having pulled it up to listen to in the background. I quite like podcast style discussion to the backdrop of relaxing gameplay. I've watched you guys on and off for years and did give your Hatchat podcast a go when you first started, but I felt myself easily distracted from it. I think I'll head over and subscribe to give it another chance. About opinions: I think it's nice to remember that many (if not all) opinions are formed by more than just one piece of information or interaction - so receiving one piece of information isn't always enough to warrant a capitulation. It _should_, however, be enough to prompt further discussion and research. I agree that humility is a great trait, but absolute humility is as bad as absolute stubbornness. After all, a synonym of humility is self-abasement (particularly out of feeling inferior or guilty). In reality (like in all things), I think I want a balance. I don't think you should just capitulate when someone dictates some related fact, but I don't think you should ignore it either. USE that feeling of wanting to be correct in your beliefs to talk, read and understand more sources in addition to your own experience. Then you can demonstrate true positive humility by not being too up your own arse if you find more tangible weight on your side of the argument, or by conceding the points that you've come to understand, or just sitting around on the fence being receptive for a while because you realise it's all so complex and can't easily be boiled down. I suppose one difficulty is that there are some arguments to which there is no easily objective right and wrong - and there's where you begin to get the most spirited, stubborn and sometimes destructive arguments; but also the most human. Also, you can discuss ideas, philosophy and history without being explicitly political, so it doesn't turn into a battle of tribes. The history of ideas and philosophy is a particularly potent tool for an interaction of minds. I agree love and unity are important. I also think competition is important. I also believe freedom is important. I also know responsibility is important. If you stop at just love and unity, then you lose freedom, responsibility and competition. And unity (ie socialism/communism in your mind? But also fascism because they're two sides of the same coin) is faaaaar more easily abused than a collective of complex individuals that compete and cooperate for both self interest and a greater good. Remember, when you start to find 'authoritarian socialism' attractive, think about the great and gruesome strides the fascists of the 20th century took via authoritarian socialism, and the appalling reduction of humanity that the communists of the 20th century took via authoritarian socialism, and hopefully you begin to feel some modicum of moral panic. Lastly, I think there's a difference between American liberals and English liberals. Tech is not libertarian just because it benefits from capitalism. I believe a more fitting description would be autocratic. And there's a reason you see a huge uptick in socialist ideas and agendas in tech, because the main aspect of socialism is a lack of private property. And the ultimate private property is yourself. You own yourself. You have the right to ownership of your data. But tech (and the giants of societies in general) is very social, and they benefit massively from owning and orchestrating your private life. Wow, wall'o'text. Anyway, very cool. Thanks o/

It is completely unrealistic to expect everyone to have a opinion on everything. You should only have strong opinions on topics that you are a expert at. It is normal for the average member of the public to have opinions on everything, but it’s not normal for the average member of the public to have strong opinions on every thing: Strong opinions on politics and ideology are the luxury of experts, not members of the public. Why is this so? There is no issue with members of the Public having a wrong opinion on something, wether it be politics or ideology. But the issue is the average member of the public has such strong opinions about things which are flat out wrong. You can however talk about things you simply have a opinion on, but it is ALWAYS good to open with a disclaimer about how uniformed your opinion is before stating your opinions. I.e. “This is just my opinion, but I think...”, “I’ve heard this from someone else, and thus is my opinion....”, “I read this from a newsletter, thus may be incorrect...” TL;DR: Strong opinions on politics and ideology are the luxury of experts, not members of the public. But this doesn’t mean you cannot have opinions on things, you can. Acknowledge the fact you are not a expert and provide disclaimers when talking about issues.
