It's funny. Russians refer to the Napoleonic invasion of the Motherland as the Patriotic War, and WWII as the Great Patriotic War. Besides, the Soviet Union loved cherry picking things from the Russian Empire. 1. The mention of Borodin in this song 2. Using concepts from the Patriotic War, such as Rodina, or Motherland 3. Using propaganda posters featuring Mikhail Kutuzov, a Russian Marshall during the Napoleonic invasion. 4. Even naming one of their most advanced light cruisers after Kutuzov, the Mikhail Kutuzov And those are only a few examples. In many ways, the Soviet Union was very similar to the Russian Empire.

Little gripe - I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with "Borodin" (with all due respect to Mikhail Markovich Borodin, he had little to do with Russian/Soviet military history and even fell victim to a Stalinist purge because of his Jewish ancestry - so highly unlikely he would show up in a Soviet military anthem); this more likely a reference to the battle of Borodino (Бородинó) against Napoleon in 1812. This particular battle became a national trauma, as Napoleon took Moscow immediately after (and the Russians resorted to setting fire to the town so Napoleon had nothing of his victory). "Borodino" became a cautionary tale to never allow an enemy to get that far - and, after Hitler failed to take Moscow, a symbol of how strong Soviet Russia had become since then. Nonetheless, thanks for uploading!

I know it doesn't make USSR innocent, but you have to remember their sacrifice and I if I had to choose I would prefer living under USSR banner than nazi.
