A Tribe Called Red creates music that acts as a gateway into urban, contemporary indigenous culture, celebrating all of its layers and complexity. In a set that blends traditional powwow drums and vocals with hip-hop and electronic music, the DJ collective tells stories of the First Nations in beats and images -- expanding on the concept of the "Halluci Nation," inspired by the poet, musician and activist John Trudell.

Over 500 treaties were made with American Indian tribes, primarily for land cessations, but 500 treaties were also broken, changed or nullified when it served the government's interests. Missing and murdered Indigenous women is an issue affecting Indigenous people in Canada and the United States, including the First Nations, Inuit, Métis and Native American communities. It has been described as a Canadian national crisis.

If anybody goes to Washington DC for any reason and you have some down time, the two museums you should prioritize and spend a full day between are the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the National Museum of the American Indian. You can see the medals and gifts given to first nations dwindle to nothing. Not that it matters how big the trophies were, the treaties they represented were all violated. But you can see how the US Government cared less and less and less over time to even try to pretend like they cared.

I think most do appreciate musicals and what I learned was that alot of native groups have a hard time letting go of the past. I'm a native Scot and my ancestors went through tremendous pain and persecution and those wounds carried on in my family. Most of us have learned to move on. Time will heal these people too.

Probably my favorite thing on the channel. There are thousands of years of native history, and plenty of culture-related current topics to be spoken about. TED would definitely need to start a whole playlist and that would just be the tip of the iceburg! This particular set can encourage people to wonder what some of the metaphors mean,so they can start their own research. For example, when I hear "the compound was on fire," my heart sinks as I recall what happened when the Pequots were massacred in the late 1630's. (Their "compound" was set on fire during the attack.) I'm not sure of that's exactly what they are inferring to, but that's where my mind goes. And if you have 0 background knowledge even just hearing the traditional sounds and songs blended into the spoken word is a good way to start! Music is a big part of Indigenous culture for ceremony and celebration. 💜💛💜💛

I had the opportunity to see them a few weeks ago in a local performing arts theater and they were AMAZING. Every time I hear their music something has changed or evolved and it always sounds great. I love how they bring many unique and pleasing sounds together, I cant even imagine how much dedication, practice, skill and talent they have to make the music they do with such variation

Upon suffering beyond suffering: The Red Nation shall rise again and it shall be a blessing for a sick world; a world filled with broken promises, selfishness and separations; a world longing for light again. I see a time of Seven Generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again. In that day, there will be those among the Lakota who will carry knowledge and understanding of unity among all living things and the young white ones will come to those of my people and ask for this wisdom. I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am that place within me, we shall be one. - Crazy Horse, Oglala Lakota Sioux (circa 1840-1877)

@@theofficialdiamondlou2418 "My friend, I do not blame you for this. Had I listened to you this trouble would not have happened to me. I was not hostile to the white men. Sometimes my young men would attack the Indians who were their enemies and took their ponies. They did it in return. We had buffalo for food, and their hides for clothing and for our tepees. We preferred hunting to a life of idleness on the reservation, where we were driven against our will. At times we did not get enough to eat and we were not allowed to leave the reservation to hunt. We preferred our own way of living. We were no expense to the government. All we wanted was peace and to be left alone. Soldiers were sent out in the winter, they destroyed our villages. The "Long Hair" [Custer] came in the same way. They say we massacred him, but he would have done the same thing to us had we not defended ourselves and fought to the last. Our first impulse was to escape with our squaws and papooses, but we were so hemmed in that we had to fight. After that I went up on the Tongue River with a few of my people and lived in peace. But the government would not let me alone. Finally, I came back to the Red Cloud Agency. Yet, I was not allowed to remain quiet. I was tired of fighting. I went to the Spotted Tail Agency and asked that chief and his agent to let me live there in peace. I came here with the agent [Lee] to talk with the Big White Chief but was not given a chance. They tried to confine me. I tried to escape, and a soldier ran his bayonet into me. I have spoken." - Crazy Horse.

The thing is, its not just about the "natives" and the tribes. Its about all humans, you have to see it in this way. Were not machines living in a machinated world. Were human beings who mostly forgot their roots. And that is neither healthy for the body or the mind. I think we have to find a way back, start again being human. Be the monkey that we are that is able to self reflect, create, talk and being happy. I like and love technology, but it shouldnt be all about it in our lives.
