We Are The Ionians | INDIE ALASKA

Ionia is a remote, and sometimes misunderstood intentional community located outside Kasilof, Alaska. The community was originally formed nearly 30 years ago by four families, each seeking a simpler, quieter life.
The group, now numbering around 30 full-time residents, continues to pursue their goals in the relative solitude of their 160 acre communal property.
INDIE ALASKA is an original video series produced by Alaska Public Media in partnership with PBS Digital Studios. The videos capture the diverse and colorful lifestyles of everyday Alaskans at work and at play. Together, these stories present a fresh and authentic look at living in Alaska.

Its truely amazing....everything centered around food which is how traditional family communication always took place many years ago.....alaska looks amazing & perfect place. Still not managed to get here but now emailing and remaining hopeful..life has changed, mother with alzeimers whom ive been taking care of at a distance, she snow in a home. so Ionias stance re mental issues which are affecting many of us through personal stuff & relatives/parents with dementia.....the way of the world unfortuantly and defiantly not getting better in Uk at present. Im fortuante bill & Marlene Tara, great macobiotic health teachers have moved nearby me recently..thye ve both been to Ionia.

: ) I heard Bill Johnson, plus several from the second generation, talking clearly about this unusual and unique intentional community. Lovely to hear the clarity of those who live in Ionia. I lived with these people 1983-1989 and was part of one of the four families that founded Ionia. IMHO the world is a better place with Ionia in it. I feel Ionia is a place where few may actually wish to live, but which embodies answers to many of the world's problems. Thank you for creating and posting this video!

Paul Gerzon Great to hear Paul..It looks intreasting indeed and i follow macrobiotic principles and diet lifestyle.....i`m intending to visit and stay...didnt hear form them until id already got something else planned...I`m travelling around visiitng communities & countries volunteering....in future want to set up community when/where/how hasnt presented itslef or become clear as yet...taking time

Nici P funny you should mention that..my friend said i should write a book...i actually set up a blog and didnt post until a link came up..i`d lost 4yrs.....so did a long update but missed much out that happened...bit scarey but unfortuantly I got Lyme disease in hebrides so was extremly sick for a year before i started treatment....& returned to london after 9mtns of living on erraid [findhorn]. Also lived in damanhur [Italy 3mtns] volunteered at lammas 3yrs ago now thye`re eco village!!! great to see..wwoofing is a good way to visit these places, did several communities in Uk volunteering for them.

so true that reason we are getting people `cracking up` is social...how we live isnt healthy esp in cities now....stress, fast food, fast eating, no/not enough time....disease of modern society is killing us. We need to build communities to support one another..its the only way we can survive. I visited australias crystal waters community, stayed a night/day...apparently permission would never be got for another such community now....theres 200 people living there incld from Uk. Intreasting enough an eco solar powered festival "sunrise" in monmouthshire got cancelled becoz local council trumped up a noise ban of 35 whatevers which is sound of gnat sneezing....powers that be dont want to support ethically generated ventures it seems...so sad when months ahead everything was sorted..Was conservative council that got elected recently too that did this here....cameron also supports fracking!!!

I don't think so, because cults keep their members stuck via coercion and manipulation and Ionia doesn't seem to do that. A group of people deciding to work and live together isn't automatically a cult

This group doesn't like the term "commune," but they do seem to be a an intentional community - as you say, much like the kibbutzim in Israel.

I went on a tour of this place and it's not what you see, it's what you don't. They are not self sufficient and all farm equipment is grossly under utilized and sits idle, over grown I weeds and dirt. The food they try to grow, is fertilized with their own feces. The gardens and high tower hot houses are full of weeds and generally devoid of anything resembling edible food. Their explanation of how they grow their own food and why it is so much better than commercial produce is laughable. This place is not accountable for all the monies they receive, from foundations State and Federal governments. One look at this place and it leaves you wondering, what exactly is their mission and why have they been given so much and done so little with their resources.......just go take a look, their video is joke and the message they give is regrettable.

They showed me around. They have beautiful hand built homes, a massive workshop, and a lumber milling facility. They have made good use of their inheritance.
