Given Texas’ F-16s were due to be replaced during the mid 2010s could Texas Buy F-35As to replace them from Lockheed Martin or would the federal government have to get involved?

F-16's and even f-15's are better and more durable.... There's been accounts of the 15 and 16 being able to finish a mission with a whole wing missing.... I'd argue those with a-10's and attack choppers would be better... Lots of AFB, airports, and lots of highways available for impromptu landing strips...

@@SteveVi0lence more durable? Maybe. Better aircraft? Debatable. While i think you were only using the eagle as an example the F-35 was not designed to replace the F-15. That is what the Raptor was for. And regardless The vipers Texas has were reaching the end of their service life. Also this could benefit both the usaf and Texas. Texas benifits by getting a better fighter for its air national gaurd squadrons. The us benefits by getting another F-35 Training sqadron. (the 182nd fighter squadron is the only viper training sqadron in the gaurd) I am just wondering weather Texas can just ask Lockheed for F-35s itself or if the federal government has to be involved.

Texas Country Texas National Guard reports to the governor of Texas which to my understanding is one of, if not the biggest difference between Guard and Reserves. The Guard can be called upon by the president when it’s needed.
