I get where you’re both coming from! I think the first act of this movie is what feels miscalculated- it’s shallowly self-referential with how it’s constantly comparing the movie to their lives, there’s not enough focus on the romance, and there isn’t enough driving the story forward. BUT… then that big action setpiece crosscut with karaoke happened, and that’s when the movie grabbed me and didn’t let go! You definitely suspect something shady is happening, but the twist was the exact jolt of energy this movie needed to raise the stakes and make the romance something to truly fight for! It also stopped trying to be meta and just shifted its focus into being a genuinely thrilling action movie in its own right. So glad I didn’t see the trailer that spoiled the ending, because for me, this movie ended up actually having some of the most fun and fist-pumping action I’ve seen since Top Gun: Maverick. So I went from being mildly underwhelmed to thinking this is exactly how a great blockbuster should feel! I suspect this movie will have a cult following kind of like Gosling’s other underrated action comedy The Nice Guys, while also inspiring people to pursue filmmaking since it’s such a love letter to every person on set! Honestly, I’m thinking 9/10.

Did anyone realise that this movie was an adaptation of an old TV series? It's not quite a one-to-one kind of adaptation, but it's a similar premise, same name, etc. Also, I did enjoy the movie. Mostly because I feel like this movie does three things: It's not something absolutely incredible and constantly breathtaking or anything, but it's just a fun movie, and sometimes I just want to watch a fun movie. It celebrates the team behind movies, and I live for that. It follows the same stride as a lot of really great, classic 80s-90s movies and even passes a lot of them, so I feel like saying this one is bad and they aren't is just blind nostalgia, and I want to give this movie a chance to not just get steamrolled. Plus, movies haven't been great recently, so I feel like that raises my evaluation some.

Spot on about the Ryan Reynolds thing. It was like a Ryan Reynolds Netflix film.
@SaberRexZealot8 ай бұрын
100% agree about the Ryan Reynolds comparison. It really does feel like his kind of wheelhouse where he just has fun with his friends making a silly, likeable but ultimately inoffensive product. Besides the stunts, which are good, the characters were unbelievably flat, the comedy extremely pedestrian, the editing distracting and the humour overly referential. At the risk of being a pretentious elitist, it’s a normy film. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s nothing special either. It’s only disappointing because Gosling has done amazing comedy work in the past like Crazy Stupid Love or The Nice Guys or Barbie - this has so little imagination and tension in comparison. You guys remember Tropic Thunder? That’s how you do this kind of film in my opinion.

I gave the film a 7/10 same as Nadia, it wasn’t as good as I was hoping but it is the first film I have gotten my wife to go see in the theater in a long time and she actually enjoyed it. I felt there should have been more comedy throughout, it was there but not a lot of laugh out loud moments. The film also felt too long at 2 hrs it should have been 1hr 45mins max I feel for the type of story being told. Loved both the lead actors and really loved the surprise cameo at the end which I won’t spoil but that was genius!

I hated every scene with dialogue. The scene would rely on a joke but then it would continue for minutes after the joke had ran its course and it felt like the case against letting actors improvise. This movie is not supposed to be taken seriously, I don’t know why are people digging so deep into it. It’s ridiculous in a good way, it’s not pretentious, it’s not really logical and tbh wasn’t trying to be. It is there to poke fun at the industry while entertain you a lil on the way. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. Somehow, I liked The Fall Guy for what it was (it's like a 7/10 for me), but at the same time I don't disagree with Jake's overall criticism. In fact his comments on the winking at the audience and it being more of a stereotypical Ryan Reynolds film made me realise what was kind of bothering me about the film but I couldn't quite articulate it.

I have to agree with Jake here, Emily and Ryan has zero chemistry, I didn't buy their love story, it feels lame, it feels like the film are trying to tell us they are in love, kiss, hug, etc. But the actual act of love, of caring deeply is not there, it's just like they following the script and didn't got any love pour into each other. I wacthed Hit Man recently, another romcom on Netflix, didn't have any action in it, but the moment Glen's character show his care to Adria's character, I just believe it. Emily and Ryan characters doesn't have any moment like that.

Ok I was dedicated to seeing this movie no matter what because my small time local theater just reopened and I really wanted to support them. I saw the 1.5 review on letterboxed just before I went in, so expectations were low. Really though, I thought it was a pretty good experience. Unapologetically corny, never taking itself seriously for one second. Not every funny moment worked, but enough of it did to call it passable. I remember at the flaming dock scene, I thought the movie was winding down, that this was the resolution - and I found myself wanting more. Fortunately there was a lot more. I'd recommend it, 3.5 stars. It is true, though, that I eventually recalled that very iconic scene from the trailer as well and realized we still hadn't seen that- I agree that it was wrong to include the climax in the trailer like that, killin us.

I feel like Jake Gyllenhaal is the better action star...Ryan is trying so hard to fit in the genre with The Grey Man and now The Fall Guy...whereas Jake felt more like a natural fit in Ambulance and Roadhouse. David Leitch is such a hollow shell of a director, watching the rest of John Wick films...you can see Chad Stahelski's natural growth and progression as a filmmaker. While David Leitch's career feels "leeching" off on other filmmaker's styles and trademarks. This is a minor criticism but I hate how his films are colour graded, it seems like a KZbinr trying to create a more cinematic look to their videos. He's trying so hard to give his films some personality but it ends up annoying in an attention seeking child kind of way. I think the filmmakers behind The Lost City would have done a much better job with this material.

I liked it, but it felt like it was 3hrs long with the 3rd act joke they had going on. Went in expecting great stunts, action, and no substance and that's what we got. It's kind of in this awkward position where it's about stunt crews, but in the end it's mostly Gosling that gets people to see this. I feel like they could've done a lot more with the fact that stunt people get limited recognition and combine that with the wink at audience kinda humor. Can see this being a 4-7/10, I just thought there were enough smart moments (tbh, can't recollect them, so maybe not lol) to cancel out the cheesy-ness. 7/10

I learned that people rate things they like because they liked something specific from it, they don't value something overall, which is weird to think about. So since Ryan Gosling is hype, the movie for sure happens to have a greater reception. Same for Fallout which is a pretty fun show, but isn't really at the level of what it should and could be... It's a bit frustrating, but it's why studios only make remakes, because even if it kinda sucks, those people will say it's "good" because they either liked the original, or an actor in it... The difference before in the cinema industry, is that an actor you like, usually a good actor, usually made good movies. Now a good actor is certainly not a guaranteed good movie. Even Jack Gyllenhaal made that fighting movie recently that is pretty mid, Henry Cavill is cursed, Keanu Reeves has better roles in games. There is maybe Tom Cruise that still managed to have some kind of reputation, producing his own movies kinda help. It's easy to kill the trust of consumers, something that they studios don't think about for short profits. Just a shame for the US. But maybe the cinema will come from somewhere else, like the british shows are pretty good.
