The last guy said he starts work earlier and gets off work earlier, but the time zone difference being based in Utah would do the opposite with him living in DC. It's much easier to INITIALLY get into Software Engineering if you enjoy coding, but you DO NOT need to have a passion for it. I know plenty of people that don't have a passion for it that are Software Engineers, including myself. I still find it to be a good fit because I enjoy a continuous learning environment. I think that's necessary to find it as a suitable career. The only issue with having no passion for the job is that you will find teammates who live and breath coding (or some form of tech), which can cause imposter syndrome. It's very common in the field. One thing to note is that the job often requires studying during your free time IF you plan on finding a new company to work for. Technical interviews can be a bit rough, but the actual job isn't as difficult. There's a reason many people learn to code on their own or go through a (14-week?) coding bootcamp and have a successful career as a Software Engineer. I'm a bit biased though, since I went through a coding bootcamp.

It was my only regret. I am successfully retired now, but I always wish I had followed that path after I retired from media sales and went to community college for video editing etc. I got A's in HTML and CSS, but failed C++. I wish I looked for a bootcamp back then.😎

Guaranteed: the research assistant (disaster resilience) was probably in the top 2 most intelligent people in this segment, and was only compensated at $30K/year---and said he was satisfied with his pay. Kids, don't go into academics if you want to get paid well unless you are independently wealthy and see academics as a calling.
