You could even do wheel spins for each item to see who it goes to, so you don't know if you want good or bad items. And if you get two items for one slot the wheel can include a "swap to second choice" option.

If you're going to do challenges based on donations here's an idea: Both of you should be in the same world at the same time at a popular spot. Your job, convince the audience to give you the good stuff instead of your opponent. If someone accepts a trade with one of you, the other is not allowed to trade that player. Whether or not you swap equipment before the fight is up too you ;)
