If you live anywhere there are trees, keep an eye out for mulberry trees. They typically fruit for months and the fruit (looks exactly like blackberries) doesn't keep very long, so people usually don't harvest them. Plus they stain sidewalks black, so people are usually happy to get rid of them. Pick them yourself, and you'll end up with enough to fill one of those grocery store produce clamshells every single day. There's also a urban fruit-picking program in Toronto where people pay a small fee to harvest fresh fruit from people's homes.

Here's the thing, I forget the actual name but agricultural board announced a month ago that according to what they know prices should reduce to pre pandemic prices... when inflation is coming down but food and gas is still much higher than inflation and driving inflation, something needs to be done, they are lying and they are gouging. For example, they couldn't help themselves bragging about record profits but then said it was driven by pharmacy but their pharmacies are not even attached to groceries.....their profits are kept separate a store manager and the pharmacy locally told me that .....they think we are stupid and they are allowed to do it

Farmers are being robbed blind, they have to raise their prices and still aren’t breaking even, then the trucking companies that bring the food from farmer to the store, they have their own carbon tax to pay, so they raise their costs, then the grocery store now gets the product at double the price and also have their own carbon tax to pay too. So by the time you go shopping everything has at minimum TRIPLED. Each time the carbon tax gets raised, prepare for things to get worse. Local grocers and second-hand grocers definetly help go a long way! I still go to the big chains whenever I see a good deal and make sure to use apps like Flipp and too good to go for deals. That last guy was right. No need to cut back but rather find cheaper or less expensive versions/brands of those foods. Cut back when you need to if your getting financially desperate.

I have also heard that same nutrients are better absorbed when consumed in local form, not foreign. I.e. Central Europeans will get more vitamin c absorption from cabbage than from lemon or orange

You do realize the America as a country makes the most money in terms of revenue. The fact that majority of the people who got interviewed probably makes more money than someone from China is struggling to buy groceries is wild. I came from Cali to Shanghai, China and my grocery bill was less than 40$ a week for fresh produce and meats. I can get 28 pack of eggs for less than $2 in Shanghai which mind you is the financial capital of China so it should be expensive but it's not. It really isn't about "oh other people struggle the same way". The math aint MATHIn . The government is real getting away with murder at this point

We have to skimp or give things up... just so we can afford to care for our pets (food, toys, vet bills.) I have learned to make a list and stick to that list. Meal plan for the whole week. I buy sale items (ex. hamburger... make one meal, spaghetti with meat sauce, then the next day have meat loaf or a hamburger.) Stay far away from corner convenience stores... way too expensive!

It has nothing to do with greed, it costs them more to buy and transport so they pass along the cost to consumers of the end product. That’s how the economy always works

I shop around a lot. Fruits, vegetables, and some meats at Asian grocers. The majority of the times, they're better for less. Staples like eggs, milk, and bread are still cheaper at major franchises. And if i can plan accordingly, i can use the discounted items on the day of purchase. PreCOVID, my weekly grocery bill would be a little over $120 for a family of 4. That's easily $200 now, for less to boot. But since I do kitchen jobs (3 now, 2 preCOVID), I can subsidize my groceries by packing the occasional work leftovers.

I make chillie when ground beef is on sale, I make chicken roast when whole chicken is on sale. I buy everything frozen when possible, frozen fruit and veggies are more nutritious and cheaper. I buy bread in bulk on sale and freeze it. Things are tough, but as the last guy said, start bargain hunting and don't buy shit you don't need. I can't believe so many people have things expire in the fridge, I've only had things expire in the fridge maybe twice ever.

This is the time you should explore Costco even if youan individual and not a family of 10. The membership fee for executive is $110 but you get 1% cash back. If you pump gas and buy everything there, you should break even with the cost of membership. Otherwise they'd refund you if it doesn't work for you. You have to get some sort of system going at your house in terms of spending their. The portions are huge but the quality is impeccable.

Remember: there is ZERO nutritional differnce between fresh and frozen vegetables. Like nothing notable. Yet the cost difference is huge when you consider food waste. We waste none of our frozen veg. Even when the bag gets low, we jsut mix all the bag ends together and have a mish mash veggie dish. Buy a casket freezer off of marketplace (got mine for 20 bucks) and filled it up. Even in a power outage, sealed a caskey freezer will be okay for 3 days. If its beyind that the worlss ending anyway.

My workplace has increased the starting pay by 65 cents in 4l3 years. Minimum wage has increased by over 2 dollars since I started at this MEDICAL PLANT 3 years ago in Ontario. Things are becoming so silly. I remember as a child in the early 2000's. My Mom would play a game try to guess the grocery bill. She spent $350 on 2 overflowing carts at the time. Now I can't hold $200 bucks in both arms and I'm a small gal. What the actual fuck is happening. I make almost $5 above minimum wage and half my wage goes towards rent. The other options are basements for $200 less, no thanks. What the fuck is happening. I can't even decide to have children.

Here are a couple of tried out ideas that work for sure. Please keep in mind that I tried them in my country in Europe so if you have any weird laws and can't do this or don't have this, I'm very sorry. I hope things you'll be better and you'll have to this soon enough :) 1. Growing your own vegetables/herbs. Herbs, even dried and sold as spices are very expensive so if you use spices a lot or fresh herbs, I recommand you try this. Save any sort of plastic container you have, use a heated up nail (heat it up with a lighter or on your stove) and make drainage holes in it. Get the cheapest bag of soil you can find and the cheapest seeds you can find. What grows fast is salad, radishes, spinach, broccoli sprouts, cherry tomatoes and Bell pepper. Thyme, coriander, tarragon, basil can also be grown from seed. Next search youtube videos about how to grow herbs indoors so you can understand the light and watering needs. When your herbs get their first true leaves (leaves look like the adult plant) you can transplant them in whatever bigger container you have. You harvest them as needed and when they produce seeds, you can plant those in the hot months. 2. Join a Zero Waste or No Food Waste group. A big city such as Toronto definetly has those types of groups on Facebook. Join them and swap food with other who maybe move out or have excess. 3. Buy from the reduced food section in supermarket. Lidl, Kaufland and Mega image gave these baskets where food is even 90% reduced to imperfections or fast expiration date. Buy it and cook something delicious. Large supermarket stores in USA may have them too, look it up. 4. Freeze your food. Summer is coming, berries will be cheaper, so will any seasonal vegetable. Buy it in larger batches, freeze it and use it in the winter when the prices will go up. Please look up vegetable freezing techniques before you do so. 5. Regrow food scraps. I highly recommend the channel Jessie Grows for that. I regrew bok choy in winter! I know it was a long read but I promise you it will save you money, especially long-term ❤️

400-500 per month. One protein a week. Eggs daily. Besides that we try to design our food choice around cheap and high quantity groceries lot of cabbages, multi grain instead of wheat flour, milk 4l pack, frozen veggies when fresh ones are expensive, Cheapest bread available, cheapest salad dressing, ketchup, spinach, we cycle whichever berry thats cheaper strawberry or raspberry or blueberry. And there are some aisles we avoid all together like ice creams, frozen pizzas, burgers, candy, soft drink, chips, toys, fancy breads, snacks. its not a choice that I enjoy but its the choice I have to live with. To tackle rent and utilities, saving up for a car, one thing that the govt could help is with taxes they are a huge chunk out of our paycheck. But not planning to visit food bank yet.

I shop at a local co-op and it’s all organic high quality from local farms and blueberries are $5 a container. That’s not a lot of money. 60% of places in America have access to place like I’ve mentioned. I eat locally produced beef and potatoes and veggies and fruits all for about $350 a month. Yeah if you’re in nyc or a place like that/very rural it’ll be more. But I live in rural New England and Massachusetts is known to be one of the most expensive places to live in all of America and I manage $350 a month for groceries and about 2k for total cost of living. It can be done. My biggest money saver is living with a long time friend who’s like family to me. He gets some income and I get a cheap place to stay. It works out. Gotta spend less than you make!
