It's better than being homeless. Sadly, more and more people are being priced out of the rental market completely. But, I would rather buy a condo than live on a house boat. As she doesn't own the dock space or mooring space, the harbor master can evict all the houseboats if they have other plans for the dock. That's the downside. Which makes it very similar to renting. Things NOT mentioned: - The water smells different (and not in a good way) at different times of year - THE PESTS (bug and other) -- what pest loves to lay eggs in water? MOSQUITOS~! - CANADIAN WINTER on WATER?! (She didn't discuss what the life is like when the weather is not idea for "boating" or "water activity" on great detail -- In Toronto, the winters can get really nasty and messy, and windy -- ICE must be a really huge pain) - THE MOTION! House boats, like regular boats, are moving on the water as it moves. The location the boat is to sit while you live must be examined so that you know what sort of motion you'll be dealing with and what that looks like in inclement weather. I'll bet that house boat dips and sways quite alarmingly in the height of stormy weather, but it could be sheltered enough. So, just to be clear, this looks like a lovely idea but I would NOT recommend you run out to try it without looking into all the DOWNSIDES to living in a boat/on water in a place like Toronto, Canada where we have 4 full seasons of varied weather to live through in a year... I recommend you try renting out a place like this FIRST, and do so through inclement weather months, to see if it suits you in truth.

I bet it’s absolutely idyllic during the summer. Not sure I fancy a Canadian winter on a houseboat. Fuel costs must be atrocious.

These "boats or house boats" are NOT boats, they are not able to leave the marina on their own power. They are floating barges and are not for recreational use. Marina use is recreational (also commercial as appropriate) and zoned as such. These homes are taking up space for recreational boaters and also driving up costs for docking etc. The basic rule for people living on vessels was the vessel needed to leave the marina on their own power and return to their slip on a three day notice. This rule stopped people from buying junk boats and living on them. These House Boat units are not built to any standard (not to building standards nor ABYC boat standards ) and as such can not be moved to a building lot if the owner is told that the marina no longer allows these units. Talk to people that have experience gained from the Outer Harbour experience with the development of the failed bid to allow these type units. People lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is only a matter of time before these units are forced to leave. Then what do you do with your unit. You are certainly not going down the road nor going to move to another marina. Again this water is for recreation purposes and if you want to live aboard then you need to live on a boat. This is a very risky purchase and it is just a matter of time before they may be asked to leave. It has been fairly low key in that marina but articles like this may change that situation. You need to do your due diligence and protect your investment.

343,000 can get you a pretty decent house in my neighbourhood in Rural Newfoundland! I paid less then some people pay for a pickup truck for my place :)
