Been watching for years and subscribed on my other channel northeast whips I'm not an engine builder but since watching your content I've learned so much it's brilliant. I absolutely love the content. Don't understand all these people who pick you apart on certain facts or they try to control what content you put out, or what editing you do. It's your channel not ours. Being in the trade it's awesome to see some one being able to put the time into making content around the job they do. It's not easy to get the time to do what you do in this world. So hats off. All of the haters need to get a grip and grow up. Your trying to have a say in how somebody runs there business, that's like someone walking into your house without knowing you and telling you how your raising your children is wrong. Just enjoy it for what it is end of story, if you have a problem just don't watch, it's easy. Seriously guys lees a top bloke for treating us with this channel, he explains everything as best he can, is turning Issac into a weapon of an engine builder and they are as honest as the days come. Literally in the automotive trade we couldn't ask for a better standard of person. Keep up the videos mate, always a fan. I'm gonna pop down your way over the summer in the camper and come see yous Much love lads 😊

The bda can be 1600 to 1800 and the BDG is an alloy block 2000cc
@Redshift-Күн бұрын
BDA's could be anything from 1100cc to 2.2Ltr BDG was a Cosworth Iron Block (with 90mm vacuum brazed Liners) Formular 2 race Engine with I believe F1 Cams giving 290 BHP on Fuel Injection.

No, a "BD" can be between 1100 and 2200, from memory, the "A" is specifically the "1601" production engine, other size engines have different identifying letters. Ah, here you go - BDA 1600cc 120bhp std engine for Escort 1969 BDB 1700cc 200bhp rally engine sold as a kit 1970 BDC 1700cc 230bhp Gp 2 escort fuel injected 1970 BDD 1600cc 200bhp Formula Atlantic motor 1971 BDF 1927cc 270bhp Formula 2 engine, liners brazed in cast block 1972 BDG 1975cc 275bhp formula 2 and rally later with alloy block 1973 BDH 1300cc 190bhp GP2 1973 BDJ 1098cc 150bhp Formula C for SCCA 1974 BDK reseved for forgotten project BDL experimental turbo BDM 1599cc 225bhp Formula Atlantic, big valve injected BDD 1975 BDN 1600cc Canadian Atlantic BDO not allocated BDP 1975cc 245bhp Sprint car fuel injected methanol 1984 BDQ not allocated BDR 1601cc Caterham Seven Road ? 1983 BDT 1778cc 200bhp RS1700T turbo 1981 BDT 1803cc 250bhp RS200 BDT-E 2137cc 500bhp evolution BDT by Brian Hart BDX basicly BDG spec with larger valves and 10mm spark plugs And then there are the Zakspeed engine versions, with and without Turbo Courtesy of Spelberg Lotus Book
@Redshift-17 сағат бұрын
@ 😀 List Helps to basically show the BD Variants It's Close enough for a quick and dirty reference, the first few were Copied from the Cosworth Specs/Docs. Example : BDX wasn't a real Cosworth Designation, It was something Swindon Race Engines came up with - I know because I had one 😉 and it was Big Valve BDG head with 10mm plugs as the list noted. It's all a little bit academic really, that anyone with a 2.0 Litre BD called it a BDA or a BDG🤣 - You would though expect it to be 2ltr. The "A" was Cosworths Designation for Ford Iron Crosflow Block, and just to confuse they also Used "A" for the pre Crossflow Block FVA Engines 😂 Bottom Line they are all Great little Engines that would Sing their Heart out - But Crazy Expensive !!
@gordowg1wg1454 сағат бұрын
@@Redshift- Agreed. Not BD's, but I do have some Cosworth KBA engines, which I think was the designation for the C20XE they developed for Vauxhall.

Great video Lee. Fantastic to see engine strip down and diagnosis, fault finding and remedy. Loved seeing the machining and discussing the mini block too. I've been a subscriber from the beginning and to be honest, the channel has been getting too much like watching Eastenders drama. I originally subscribed because I love engine building and enjoyed seeing you guys do exactly that and the care younput into your work. Sometimes there has been far too much chatter about the business and the engineering side of the business has got completely lost most of the time. Of course, my opinion only, but I felt this needed to be said as I've always enjoyed your content and wish you the very best in your business. More engine building video's please and machining too.

Cast iron is strong but very brittle whereas ductile iron-also referred to as spheroidal or nodular iron-is actually a group of irons that exhibit high strength, flexibility, durability, and elasticity due to their unique microstructure.
@gordowg1wg14518 сағат бұрын
Quite! "Cast iron" actually covers a wide range of iron castings and techniques, with different properties, such as you gave.
@brianadams260115 сағат бұрын
I don't think they cast a cast iron liner into the aluminium block - molten cast iron would melt the block so they must press liners in at the factory. But I could be wrong!
@rosschamberlain182311 сағат бұрын
It's the other way around. The liners are set into the inner core mould first then the aluminium is poured in once the outer mould is set in place. Basically.

BDA was based on the Kent block, BDB was developed for the RS1600 then it’s all a tangled web of different capacities and specs etc up to BDG when they changed to an alloy block ( possibly part way through the life of the BDG,not sure as I’m not a Ford expert ) which is what a mk2 RS1800 would have in it as far as I know. Mr Costin and Duckworth were so far ahead of their time !

If that crank is a replacement of the original then something must have gone wrong with the original, hence the replacement. If the replacement was standard when fitted and is now 10 undersized that means that on 2 different occasions something went wrong. Total of 3 times at least. The question to ask is *WHY*? The answer might be that the oil channels feeding oil from the main gallery to each main bearing were drilled too small and the mains are being starved very slightly BUT the big end bearings are having a serious starvation problem. This would NOT show up as low pressure because the undersized channels would give a lot of back-pressure and make the oil pressure look good on the gauge (which is in the main gallery). BUT also, don't simply ram the biggest drill through the channels either. Too big a channel diameter could cause too much flow which may bleed off too much oil pressure. .5 to 1.0mm bigger should be safe enough.

Bore might hone. You can get 90.335mm pistons for a 2ltr bdg to fit a 90.4 bore

Not the molecular structure. Its actually the crystalline structure which is different. Cast iron has big random flakes of graphite which makes it weak brittle. Ductile iron is also cast, but with a nodulising element like magnesium added to the melt. That causes the carbon to form spherical crystals - much more stable and stronger. I would imagine that things like liners are cast using the centrifugal method - the melt is poured into a spinning mould which further refines the microstructure.

You need to go back to metallurgy school, you murdered the difference between ‘cast iron’ and ‘ductile iron’, it’s in the grain structure and the chemistry. It’s all in the shape of your carbon precipitates
