To mark the occasion of hitting 1K subscribers on the channel, we set out on a journey to see if we can get 1000 miles out of a single tank of fuel. We'll be sitting almost exclusively on the M25...stupid... yes... idiotic... yes. It's the ultimate range test... with fuel prices rising almost every day, how far can you really get when you try.
We'll savour all the sights the M25 has to offer, from Clackett Lane Services to the Dartford crossing and the QE2 bridge.
Our Saab 95 laps up the miles but it doesn't quite go to plan and things get complicated towards the end.
Many thanks to everyone who has subscribed and watched our videos :-)

I'm watching this 3 months after you uploaded and you're now almost at 50k subscribers. Massive well done! I just recently subscribed and binge wathed your all the service station series. We use to own an Hyundai i40. Not an interesting car, but a comfy cruiser. We drove it from Glasgow to Southampton and back again on one tank. That was 867miles and there was enough fuel left to take it past the 900mile mark. That was driving at 70mph though with air con. I reckon if it was driven at 55mph with gentle acceleration it could have also achieved 1000miles on a tank.

I have one of those Saabs - same age, same engine, probably the same manufacturing batch as yours. It's a great car - very comfy and reasonably reliable. The best MPG I ever saw was 49.9 and the best DTE just over 950 miles. Strangely, with mine, when the tank is brimmed it shows empty, the opposite of yours. I regularly do multi-hundred miles journeys with no stops and step out with no aches or pains.

Saab 9-3 and 9-5 are the best cars I have ever owned. The petrol models seem to be most fuel efficient at 82MPH so yeah, not gonna happen on the parked25. I once hit the bottom of the Dartford bridge at 123mph (2am) in a 1983 Cavalier CDi, slowed her down so I didn't fly off the top !!!

@benlee4940

@@AutoShenanigans I am an idiot who overthought that. The difference is something around 480m. If you assume that you stayed in lane 1 in each direction with 4 x 11m lanes and a central reservation of about the same width (6 lanes and a central reservation between the car in each direction.) Not done a whole lap, (thank goodness) but I know near Heathrow is wider and they've gone to managed Motorway in large stretches, so I've just averaged at 4 lanes, the width of the central reservation varies so I just guessed at 1 lane so it's probably less than 480. I've not counted Dartford crossing, it's not the M25. If you were in lane 4 (or 6 - the fast lane) both ways, then the difference is only 70m. However, the carriageways split a bit to the East of South Mimms near J23, the anti clockwise being shorter. But at J5 the anti clockwise carriageway has a shorter route than the clockwise carriageway. Not sure if the difference is close to 70m, but it might be close. A better estimate of the central reservation would help. This was calculated whilst being a passenger, stuck in traffic, on the M25.

A second hand car of this kind would cost maybe £2k…. Has an 800+ mile range, ‘charging’ infrastructure widespread from lands end to John o groats to Ulaanbaartar, 5min to ‘recharge’ from 0 to 100%… and is probably 95% as comfortable and useful a car as the latest EVs. Food for thought.

Great channel-recently found it. Just a few notes on the challenge. Did you have the air con switched on? 5 or 6 speed manual transmission? Check tyre pressures before starting? That division prob cost 50 miles range. …..as did the heavy traffic. What I have found over time is it isn’t all about outright mpg…the size of the fuel tank plays a big part in range. So, you can get a Vw up petrol 1.0 which does 60mpg……but that only has a 30 litre fuel tank….range 350m.
@SerenaBluee
@SerenaBluee 2 жыл бұрын
All the 1.9 150hp diesels used by GM in this era came with the 6-speed M32 gearbox in manual form. The final drive puts them at about 1500rpm at the stated 50mph. You're right about the tank size playing a big role, and the mileage to a tank is a bit of a false measure of economy. The best I've managed in my car (a Vectra estate in 2.0 turbo petrol format) is 48mpg and it has a 61 litre tank giving a maximum predicted range of just over 640 miles. My worst "best" was 32mpg in my Mazda RX8 and that only had a 50L tank meaning the best range I ever got out of it was 350 miles. My average in that car was 250 miles to a tank.

I'm looking forward to the 2023 1000miles challenge! Next time, higher tyre pressures, oil change before the trip, a double shot of injector cleaner before the trip I reckon you'd just make 1000miles. Just have a small fuel can in the boot for when you run out! See you next year!!!! 😁😁

It's something that as a youtube creator you are constantly battling with... Shorter videos tend to get a higher view duration %, which YT prefers. On longer videos (this one for example) most people have stopped watching by 8 mins and that doesn't work in our favour as a channel. I also find most youtube viewers (myself included) have A.D.D so whilst I'd love to brim every video with facts, I fear for the most part people will get bored. For mindless motorway silliness, one night I drove north up the M6 from the M54 - in a 40mph speed limit (courtesy of Smart Motorway roadworks in Staffordshire) - in a diesel Renault Clio. I turned round at Manchester because it was just too interesting (and I wanted to get some sleep) and the Clio gave me over 95mpg for that trip. In a less-insane incident, I made it all the way from Dover to Corley Services on the M6 on less than 2 gallons, averaging 62mph and getting about 83mpg. It was a good car when it got into a cruise - seemed to have a super-sipper mode. Now I have a diesel Fiesta which is worse in almost every respect - less power, less comfort. less space and no super-sipper mode on a long cruise - altogether a dreadful car, but I couldn't conscionably pass it on to somebody else, so I'll drive it to death. I may be a masochist, but at least I have scruples. Public Service Message - the mk6.5 Fiesta is terrible. If you ever get the chance to buy one, don't.

I drive on the M25 every night. Always a road closure or two. Usually anti-clockwise is better at night as diversions tend to be shorter. Great video guys 👍

You need a copy of the M25 Jam Buster with you. I used to park on this road in the 1980s and 1990s when it was only 2 or 3 lanes, but had a book that showed alternative routes to miss junctions out. I was also working in Potters Bar when the Milk Snatcher opened the final bit of it. A couple of weeks later I did my first full lap clockwise lap, then another week later did an anticlockwise trip. It took about 2 hours each time.

Are all cars in the UK still manual transmission? Are UK miles the same as US miles? Here in the US I can't get more than 400 miles on one tank in my Prius, which is automatic hybrid.

A lot are manual but most these days are DSG. The Prius never had a good range :(

Your Saab has very impressive fuel consumption compared to my Volkswagen Passat 2018. I don’t think I could do 860 miles on single tank . BTW it was funny to watch 😂

I've never enjoyed the M25 (Circle of Hell) as much as this. Likely because I'm sitting my fat arse at home and not driving it. But fair play to you

My old 9-3 1.9tid did 55mpg at 70mph with cruise control. Though that was going down the M1 and back up it doing a 400 mile round trip 1 evening.

860 miles is pretty much 2 x tanks of fuel in the R34 at 50 MPH and 35 MPG. Congratulations on the 1000 subs chaps and here's to many more!

I wonder if the premium diesel would have given you less or more miles? Also, given the age and mileage of the car, how about running a fuel cleaner through the car before hand? And losing some excess weight (in the car), I noticed that boot liner for starters!

I've seen all sorts in other people's cars whilst driving along up high above them. The usual on the phone, laptops, weans battering each other in the back seat, front seat passengers flicking the bean, or giving head. But never in 20 odd years have I seen anyone playing monopoly 🤣🤣 Well done sir, I thought I had seen it all.
