Loved the catch and release debate with the old-timer. I have never eaten a fish that was as enjoyable as catching big trout through the ice!
@Morphman19
@Morphman19 4 жыл бұрын
Della Bay I always keep any big trout. Now it’s a different kind of fishery, it’s meant for people to take fish. All the big ones aren’t ones that survive from the stocking effort but rather aquarium fish that are thrown in because they won’t survive long. If you have a tiny lake with 2K+ fisherman on the first day you know that it’s not really meant for catch release. Now if the season at the time dictates catch-and-release only you follow the laws. I really only release massive walleye because those fish actually spawn.
@turkey2003
@turkey2003 4 жыл бұрын
Studies for trout survival through winter show mortality rate of around 80-90%. With browns and lakers having the lowest survival. No real sense in releasing them to die. That being said these tigers are expensive fish so the state figures they could sell more licenses with a catch and release fishery vs put and take.

Funny how fish will sit so close to shore sometimes. I've caught fish at the end of a boat ramp dock before, even just sitting on the dock cause the ice was still too thin to support my weight! You'd be surprised how prevalent that attitude is. You run into it a lot if you target muskie or trophy bass, catfish, etc. It's hard enough for some people to understand catch-and-release, but you threw back a really big fish, to boot! I've stopped showing muskie pics to most people because of the stupid questions. "How'd it taste?" "I don't know. I don't eat muskies." "Oh...Then what's the point?" (tbf- most don't actually say this- they just look at you stupidly) "The challenge. The sense of accomplishment. Enjoying the outdoors." "Still seems pointless to me." "When you finish a video game (or a book) do you eat the cartridge?" "I see what you're trying to do, that's dumb." "It's your logic."

Some people don't "get" catch and release. Funny story, when I first met my wife's family years ago I was a diehard catch and release bass and muskie angler (still am). I was showing off a picture of a 47×22 incher I had caught. Her family is old school Italian, lots of aunts uncles etc. from the old country were at the table. First question "how'd it taste?" " I don't know " I replied "we let it go after the photo". There was a moment of silence around the table, then I heard "He crazy" from one of the aunts in a hushed tone to her husband. They accept my craziness now after all these years, although I do try to bring some 1-2 lb bass or walleye home for her parents if I can.

Icefishing in a large hole like that looks awsome and it´s something I´d like to try some day, now my concern is that somebody would fall in after I left it. Do you mark the hole or something after you done fishing? Also the places I´m at have loads of snowmobile´s running around, maybe its a bad idea making this big of a hole on a lake like that?
