Outside of Juneau and the grandmother she was one of the innocent people in the Usher family who wanted to do good and spoke out against some of the heinous crimes the family had committed over the years. However Roderick and Madeline didn't consider any of this when they were being offered the deal. They were motivated by greed. Roderick sealed per fate that day because she gets a part of the Usher bloodline. At least she had a peaceful death

I remember watching this show being absolutely terrified that Julius was going to die. Because in the short story, when the narrator tries to kill the second cat, his wife tries to intervene and he kills her and hides her body in the basement wall. I was so stressed that whole scene when Julius got home while Leo was losing it. Glad they deviated from the story in that aspect (but they had Verna in the wall to reference it). Also watching this made me realize just how many of Poe's short stories involve hiding bodies in walls and under floorboards and how many start with the narrator professing how sane they are (both Telltale Heart and The Black Cat start like this).

Of all the Usher children, I feel that Leo and Tamerlane were the most sympathetic. They were both terrible to their significant others, but Leo at least got upset when his siblings died, and Tammy was weird and neurotic but not evil. Samantha Sloyan is an amazing actor who is also in “Midnight Mass” where she did Emmy-worthy work.

the way carla’s various accents for verna’s manifestations all bleed into each version shown to the family is probably one of my favorite little touches she’s ever put into a character. it really shines when she’s with camille in the rue morgue and with leo in the shelter; she makes it so smooth even though it adds to the weird not quite a human vibe you get from verna. also mary’s fucking bump was the hardest mountain to climb, they didn’t have to do her like that 💀

I've suffered from insomnia. Not only can you not fall asleep, but during the day, you'll have micro naps where you doze off for a bit and then wake back up. It is a horrible feeling that had me lying in bed crying because I couldn't sleep. I had to be prescribed ambien so that I could finally sleep. What Tammy is experiencing is exactly what severe insomnia feels like. I was awake for two weeks before I finally saw a doctor about it. Mine was caused by chemo medication, but hers is being caused by extreme stress.
@Painocus29 күн бұрын
Favorite Poe story is probably William Wilson (the one Tammy's story is mainly based on, and her husband Bill is named after). My favorite Poe poem is The Conqueror Worm. Also since I already wrote this for somewhere else, here is a breakdown of the Poe references/adaptions, to the best of my ability and memory, if anyone is interested: Roderick is based on Roderick Usher from "The Fall of the House of Usher", Montresor from "The Cask of Amontillado" and the unnamed narrators from "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee". And maybe loosely on William Legrand from "The Gold-Bug". Annabel Lee (Roderick's first wife) is based on, well.. Annabel Lee from "Annabel Lee". Juno is loosely based on Jupiter from "The Gold-Bug". Madeline is based on Madeline Usher from "The Fall of the House of Usher", also on Montresor from "The Cask of Amontillado" and very loosely on the narrator of "Some Words with a Mummy". Auguste Dupin is based on C. Auguste Dupin from several of Poe's detective stories, including "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", and on the unnamed narrator of the "The Fall of the House of Usher". Rufus Griswold is based on Fortunato from "The Cask of Amontillado". Arthur Pym is based on "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". Prospero/Perry is based on "The Masque of the Red Death"- Camille is based on Camille L'Espanaye and her mother from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and probably loosely on the King from "Hop-Frog". Toby and Beth/Tina are probably loosely based on Hop-Frog and Trippetta from "Hop-Frog". Napoleon/Leo is based on "The Black Cat" and very loosely on Napoleon Buonaparte Froissart from "The Spectacles". (Julius is probably named after "The Journal of Julius Rodman", although I don't think he is very based on that story, except maybe in a very loose thematic sense.) Victorine is based on "The Tell-Tale Heart", the unnamed sailor from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and very loosely on Monsieur Renelle and Julien Bossuet from "The Primature Burial", the husband and former lover respectively of the Victorine LaFourcade of that story, with Ali taking the Victorine role in the relationship dynamic. (Ali herself is named after Alessanda from "Politian"). Tamerlane/Tammy (despite her episode and company being named after "The Gold-Bug") is based on the titular characters of "William Wilson" (her plot) and "Tamerlane" (her relationship with Bill). Bill is named after William Wilson, but as I said, Tammy is the one who is based on him. Frederick is based on "The Pit and the Pendulum", the husband from "Morella" and Fredrick from "Metzengerstein". Morella is based on Morella, from, well, "Morella" and actually takes the narrative role of the protagonist from "The Pit and the Pendulum", while Frederick takes the role of the Spanish Inquisition. Leonore is based on Lenore from "The Raven", the daughter from "Morella" and takes the role of the French Army from "The Pit and the Pendulum". Verna is based on the Raven from "The Raven", Death from "The City in the Sea" and the shrouded figure at the end of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", and to various extents takes the roles of the Red Death from "Masque of the Red Death", the 'ourang-outang' from "The Muders in the Rue Morgue", the replacement Pluto from "The Black Cat", the old man from "The Tell-Tale Heart" and William Willson's doppelgänger from "William Willson".

Verna is an anagram for Raven, and Ravens are considered death omens or manifestations of Death itself. Also the representation of several goddesses - such as The Morrigan, the celtic goddess of Fate. Also, bricking someone behind a wall is ftom A Cask of Amontillado by Poe. Right down to the jester suit. The name of the man bricked behind the wall? Fortunado. The original story of The Fall of the House of Usher involved a narrator visiting an old friend, fallen ill who is the last of his family whose twin sister 'died' but was actually buried alive. She broke out, scared him to death, the entire house cracks and collapses as well. Way more incesty vibes about the whole family though. Auguste Dupin was Poe's detective character, from Murders of the Rue Morgue, who went on to inspire Sherlock Holmes. There are SO many more references - like, EVERYTHING was a Poe reference, its crazy. Names, locations, etc.

If you are interested in the original Poe stories, the great British actor Basil Rathbone recorded many Poe stories, including the Black Cat. He is probably most famous for playing Sherlock Holmes in the 1930s, and he has a marvelous voice. KZbin has many of his recordings. You might also check out the Poe movies that were done by Roger Corman, usually with Vincent Price in the lead. The best of these is The Masque of the Red Death.
