As a hardened saab enthusiast whos been working on them for 20 years i can tell you there is something very wrong with that 9-5. 209hp is woeful for that engine. These things solider on past 200k and hold the power way up there unless theres a fault. Needs a full service with all filters and most importantly fresh plugs that are gapped correctly. The DI cassette is probably the original and very weak aswell. Also check vaccum lines and that the original dump valve isn’t internally leaking. Not many people understand or know just how ahead of its time or how powerful the trionic 7 management system was. As for rust… that is a really really… really bad one.

I very much agree with you, but then again, the BMW came from a mechanic (which also had former tuning). As for the Saab history; who knows?! Bit of an unfair comparison, really. Or they are WHP figures from the hub dyno (not corrected for drivetrain losses) and the BMW has been previously mapped? Putting more power through the FWD Saab is not going to be that effective/rewarding compared to how well known those BMWs are for responding to a few mods.

I've got 3 x 9-5 Aeros and whilst I agree they are now of an age where rust is a major issue, I'm yet to be convinced they are worse than many other 20+ year old cars. From what I see the typical 3 series of that age (or even younger) are often noticeably rusty around the bodywork. As another example I see many VAG cars 10 years younger with shameful amounts of rust. My oldest Aero just turned 25 years old 2 days ago (one of the oldest still on the road in the UK) and still pretty solid, the other two are both 2004 and are succumbing to the GM cost cutting and are not fairing so well.
