I think the venting in the floors was passive venting for the massive fireplace. A large fireplace takes in a massive amount of air as it forces the hot air up the flue. Dug properly, the vents could have brought air in from the basement, which would pull from their exterior vents, thereby circulating the air and keeping the cellar cool and fresh.

The cooker is quite a testament to the quality of things built a long time ago. They didn’t build things to last a few years, but built everything to last centuries. Styles have changed, technology changed, things went out of style, but they certainly have not fallen apart. That’s what I love about you Billy, you have passion and respect for the old. You have respect for family and friends and those who you hire. That is why I love watching your channel. xx

I literally gasped when I saw the cooker being wheeled to the fireplace. The penny hadn't dropped until then!!! How wonderful that a piece of history is being re-used in another piece of history. The mantra of 'recycle, re-use and upgrade' is being played out so efficiently by Billy, Sean and the whole gang. This place is going to be amazing. Thank you for putting this out there and letting us all enjoy the journey with you xx

There’s so much I love and enjoy about this channel in addition to watching an old building be restored to new life - the camaraderie between Billy and Sean and their in-between banter while they sort things out (as well as the occasional cheeky beer and sneaky pub lunch).

I have just watched the video again just to see that beautiful range, it will look stunning when it has been all cleaned up but what a shame it will never be lit again, a constant supply of hot water and a heating source, especially in the winter. No matter what it will still look amazing in the kitchen with the hand crafted kitchen from the doors. This is the first real transformation of the convent, the offices don't count 😂 and it is getting better and better with every new idea Billy has and Sean agrees with, how lucky that they found each other xx

I had a grandma who still cooked on an old cast iron stove when I was little. I got put to work polishing that beast all the time. I'll tell you now, I'd rather leap off the roof of your convent than do that again. Best of luck to you boys if you think you'll enjoy it. No doubt you'll find a power tool way of doing it. I didn't have that opportunity and had to do it by hand. Grandma would have said "Oh, man up little girl. It's just stove polish. It's not like laying on a shady river bank fishing like the men are forced to do." Then I'd get a wink, a quarter, and trout for supper.

Maybe you would like to use one of the doors on the cabinets that are inserted in the wall just the doors for that so they will match it would look lovely. I'm American, of French and British decent. This is almost like a dream for me. This kitchen needs to be world class, I can imagine chefs from around the world coming here and teaching, putting on shows, or catering. That wood burning stove needs to be functional, so at least folks can experience how things were done when the convent was running. Billy, don't spare any expence if you can possibly do that. This can be a world class destination. Thank so much for including us in the process.

What a lovely old cooker... somewhat reminds me of the one my Great Grandmother had at her acreage. That place was like stepping back in time into a museum of sorts. Was an old farmstead the only electricity it had was one lightbulb in the living room which had one of those 2 plug sockets in it which powered a fan and a radio. It had no running water... a hand pump in the kitchen and the big pump outside, and yes... an outhouse. Always remembered to go potty before we went there! But grandma canned on her coal stove... she had every fruit tree and shrub you could imagine as well as a big farm with a big draft horse to plow it. She lived to be 99... and lived out there till she was 95. So that stove brings back some memories for me... love that. Can't wait to see it all polished up.

I love , love, love the stove!!! There is no way that I would not make this into a functioning item. Of course, I guess with all the heating and cooling functions built into kitchen, it is not necessary to have a terrific stove to heat the whole house now. So many of these marvelous houses and even deep woods survivalist fashion their entire lives around their ager or large cabin stove . I can’t wait to see what happens next! Great job Billy and Sean!! Your video on the convent attic put me to mind....I help take care of a 130 year old Chapel. Recently we discovered that back in 1970's they insulated the roof/ceiling incorrectly. They put the insulation directly on the lathe. As a result the keys of plaster which hold the ceiling plaster up to the lathe are crumbling, turning to powder. The ceiling is in danger of falling. There's a way of saving the situation but anyway I saw you had insulation directly on the lathe of your ceiling. We found there needs to be a vapor barrier between the rectory insulation and the lathe so moisture doesn't damage the plaster. Hope this helps

I kept the coal range (as we call them) in our previous early 1900’s house and it also had the wet back for the hot water too. We swapped it for one of the same but in a fully working order, although we seldom fired it up. We only really wanted to keep it for nostalgic reasons too, so I think that’s why I love this channel because Billy sees the beauty in the old pieces and doesn’t throw everything old, out! 🥰
