the best part of unrealistic projects is when everyone says , waste of money , a waste of time , never ever ever going to get finished , you have no idea of what you are doing , the best best part is when you prove them all wrong , I know this from experience and I love proving people wrong ,, this boat project I will 100% guarantee you that you will look back on all the impossible tasks and the blood sweat and tears and they will be your fondest memory of the boat ,, when I was 21 back in 1974 I bought a 1968 57 foot Chris Craft and me being insanely picky undertook a 20 month crazy refit/remodel and I had that boat for 36 years and it was that 20 months of work and all the maintenance during the 36 years as my fondest memory , I envy the fun you will be having

Your comment is absolutely on point! We have this (boat)vision and committed, so it'll happen! Refitting our current little boat was truly hellish due to some circumstances but indeed, such an extreme amount of reward from it, every time we go to it. Holy cow, you guys - what a project! I love wood boats, have built a 37 and 42 from scratch - but that boat is four times the volume of both of mine put together! It will keep you out of mischief for a long time, but it will be incredible when you have it finished. I am wishing you good speed on your building!
@sailingvicarius7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! Building not just one, but two boats from scratch already sounds like a lot of work to me. The way you describe the size of our project makes me a bit nervous about what to expect.
@Morrisfactor7 күн бұрын
@sailingvicarius Well, I've built other boats too but they were fiberglass which is not as much fun to work with. Be sure you understand that this is a MAMMOTH undertaking. My old boat building teacher told us that a boat's volume DOUBLES about every ten feet or so - a 70' is huge. My guess would be 25,000 manhours to finish this boat so have realistic expectations. You are both young and might be faster if you have a really complete work shop set up. I expect you will spend over a half million dollars just for materials, even if you do almost everything yourself. It is easy to get overwhelmed at the magnitude of it, so break it down into small chunks and just keep working chunk by chunk. On the good side, many things take about the same time to do no matter what size boat is being built - ie: installing a stove, propellor shaft, main engine, or shower - size hardly matters - the steps are the same and take about the same amount of time. The real hours accumulate with the sanding/glassing/bulkheads/stringers, etc. When I was younger I'd have loved to tackle a project like this, so I will follow and wish you the best!
@sailingvicarius5 күн бұрын
We are indeed very aware of how big a project this is. Hopefully starting with this hull shaped object as our foundation will speed up the work. We will deep dive into many engineering and project management/logistics puzzles and solutions and we've already made quite some decisions that we think and hope will contribute to overall feasibility. We don't intend to spend years building, that would be a nightmare. At the same time we will mostly DIY and only use paid labor for behemoth jobs like fairing/sanding. I'm sure you will absolutely enjoy this project and our approach!!

Well you are in for something. 20 years ago I bought a 50ft that someone left in a marina for way too long. It took several years to get it to be a real home. Now its no longer in The Netherlands but in Indonesia. as Holland is way to cold. Its a lot of work. But very rewarding. 65-70 ft is in my opinion the ideal size. Some say 45 ft is very big. others say 60 is too large. But trust me at sea, no boat is big. Having space is a huge advantage. and the longer waterline gives speed and comfort.
@sailingvicarius5 күн бұрын
We fully agree, bigger=better because wave size is relative to your boat and slender+longer=higher hull speed! Oscillations also slow down the bigger the vessel gets. So we were super excited with this foundation of our project. And indeed restoring a boat is so much work, we really hope that building new with a head start like this will make the project more manageable for us, timewise.

Crazy. 70’ is just ridiculous for a couple, unless you are wealthy enough to have someone build it for you. All they have is chopped up bits of a half complete hull. They will need totally new everything else. Mast sails rigging engine etc. All things that an established yard would get at a better price. This boat will cost twice as much as a production boat when finished. That said, innovative thinking to cut it up to fit in a container. And they will luck end up with something that completely suits them. (But aren’t they rookies who don’t yet know what they want?) Best wishes.
@sailingvicarius4 күн бұрын
The only downside we see with the size is keeping the bottom cleaned every week in the tropics... But we're brewing on an integrated solution or two for that because we are lazy as. And periodic antifouling. Although that's less of an issue when the biofilm is often removed. Thanks for your critiquing comment and we expect you to follow the project so we have a chance to show you how we'll make it work without breaking the bank! Happy NY!
@markthomasson50774 күн бұрын
@ well good luck to you. If you follow the standard design for rig etc, I trust you have realistically costed the project. I suspect one main sheet winch will cost more than you paid for the hull!

@sailingvicarius There's an hand held electric hull cleaning device that seems to save time as well as making it a lot easier. It's like one of those rotary thingies that people use to polish cars. Sailing Zatara here on Y-tube has a ~58 ft cat that they have been using it on for a while, so it seems to be working fine…

@sailingvicarius3 күн бұрын
Besides the resulting wetted surface area and such (due to the hull shape), thing is... weight / speed optimisation is so low on our priorities that we'll compromise heavily on it for the sake of other variables. We've got so much LWL and an epic propulsion program, in case we need to outrun something bad. We'll deep dive into these topics in future episodes. Be prepared for quite the amount of sailor's controversy! hehehe
