We may have just put together the world's cheapest rod and reel combo. For under $20.00 I assembled a rod and reel combo with a bait casting reel and 30 pound braided line.
I purchase this ultra-cheap reel on Temu for under $10.00. There's no way this reel could possibly work right? Check out my latest Temu purchase in this video to see if it is any better then my last Temu purchase. Watch till the end to see if I'm able to catch a fish with this rod and reel combo.

Yeah, I did watch a bunch before I tried this out however, you know how it goes, textbook knowledge is different then applied knowledge. Plus, the product's defincies certainly didn't help.

always remember to figure out the line for the reel, rule of thumb, is if your drag is 17.6# for freshwater its 2 times the max drag, ( which is 30#braid) if your fishing saltwater it 3 times the strength. something for all those people out there dont know ? , also choicing a braid line , 4x is standard example, 15#=15# 8x is 2 times the strength , 12, is 3x , and 16x is 4 times the strength?
@SuburbanAdventures

That is helpful. I do use a conversion chart I found on line that gives a comparison of what the diameter of braid is vs. mono and so on.

@@SuburbanAdventures to stop birdcaging on a reel is to soak the braid with a cup of water over the braid, see when braid is wet is spooled off smooth then when dry , the braid is installed on the reel dry normally wetting it stops the birdcaging. setting you drag magnetics is needed to be set , i start with level 5 or the half point of the setting dial example thats same reel i have right handed , the max is 10, . for you to know , i went out on a 5 day fishing trip out of san diego, ca fisherman landing on a trip with only TEMU rods and reels for the trip, chinese line, hooks, and all tackle needed for the trip. well the trip worked out great, to proof a point , that there cheap rods reels but they hold there own, out of all the reels all worked perfect, . there is a little secert that the companies that sell on TEMU or wish or geek .com ont tel is the if the reels have a white felt material for the drag its junk, but to make it a great reel , install a graphite disk instead, alot smoother od more drag face to the stopping of the fish in a run? hope that helps you better!

Now I am NO bait caster expert... just got my first one last year, but I can say from what I've seen here. Your thumb needs to be on the spool / line the whole time during the cast and kinda guide the line out. The second your thumb comes off that line during a cast hello birds nest. Definitely a hard switch from real to bait caster I know! Good catch though my guy.

It's a completely different casting motion which is what I'm struggling to figure out.

I agree. Thumb the spool gently until the lure hits the water. As you get the feel of the cast it will come automatically how much you need to thumb the spool.

Baitcaster. It helps to adjust the tension to where the lure doesn't drop when you push the thump bar. Then loosen until it drops a little and then tighten up just a hair, Use a heavy lure and throw with the wind behind you. If you cast into the wind it better be with a heavy spoon and not a light flat lure because you will get a backlash almost every time. Keep your thumb close to the spool on the cast. If you feel the line starting to unravel apply light pressure to the spool.Unraveling is caused by the spool spinning faster than the line that is going out. Try short cast and get use to the feel and then throw a little further. Start with a heavy spoon until you get the hang of it. The key is get the spool tension just right for the lure you are casting. Don"t use line that is to heavy because it is hard to get distance with the cast. Good luck. it takes a while and has advantages over a spinning reel. One thing is your thumb can control the distance when you are casting along a bank with stickups.

I think one of my biggest issues was also my casting form. Casting a spinning rod and baitcaster is a little different motion and I was struggling to break the muscle memory of only ever casting a spinning reel.

As someone who knows nothing, how does a bait caster differ from a regular reel?
@SuburbanAdventures
@SuburbanAdventures 7 ай бұрын
The short answer: A spin caster the spool (where the line is wrapped around) stays in place, when you open the bailer and cast out the force of you casting the rod makes the line come off the spool. On a bait caster the spool spins forward as you cast. Generally, you can cast further and with more precision with a bait caster. The down side is the spool keeps spinning as the lure hits the water if you don't stop it causing the line to backlash or cause a "bird's nest" as it is referred too. Also, bait cast reels usually work best with heavier line and heavier lures.

@@SuburbanAdventuresYou can avoid most of the issues just using a semi decent wheel and setting it up properly. The tension knob helps control when it overspins when it hits the water and the magnetic brake helps prevent backlashes. Generally the problem with buying cheap baitcasting wheels is you’ll end up getting frustrated and eliminating the speed the on baitcasting. Also for using lighter line and/or lure, you can use something like a ultralight rod and a bfs wheel. The bfs wheels are generally more expensive, but you got stuff like the kingkast zephyr which is like a entry level one and not that expensive. I’m currently using mine with both UL rods and M/MH rods. My old school fisher dad wants to try it all the time. He was way too annoyed with baitcasting back in the day, but with something like mine it only requires minor manual control and works well.

@@mathiesdamm4572 I've taken this rod out again since filming this and the conclusion I've reached is that you absolutely can NOT go cheap when you buy a baitcasting reel.
@mathiesdamm4572
@mathiesdamm4572 7 ай бұрын
@@SuburbanAdventures definitely - it doesn’t have to be expensive, something like kastking zephyr goes for 38$, which is a bfs reel. Runs pretty smooth and they have cheaper options. You just can’t go with the cheapest option. I’m looking to snag up their high end reel or a shimano curado dc soon though.

Baitcaster poser good if you're out on a small boat and your fishing for a heavier fish or a small fish. I think the baitcaster is good if you can learn how to cast it without messing up😊

So I did know that you were supposed to thumb the line right before the lure hits the water, but what I have since realized is that you are supposed to thumb the line the entire time (basically). Of course, what doesn't help is that this reel is absolute trash. 🤣😂
