We bought a boat - Our new 12m home! Ep.1

Join us in our new chapter. We have sold the camper trailer but are not ready to stop the adventure. This week we set off in search of a boat we can call home. We are super lucky that the second boat we look at is the 'one'. A beautiful Swanson 38 built in 1980. After officially signing the paperwork, getting the keys and unloading a few things onboard we wonder if it's actually going to work for us to live aboard full time? Only time will tell.

I lived aboard for some years--I enjoyed almost every moment--but there were some moments of terror--. Make sure one has the BEST ground tackle and the best engine. Next is hull integrity and steering. Do not put to sea until all those topics are 100%, and do not rely on marine surveyors finding all of the problems. I used an electric diesel pump to keep the day tank topped up, and the overflow from this ran back to the main tank. I had the main tank outlet at the BOTTOM of a well in the tank floor, so there was ALWAYS complete removal of any water. I had THREE filters in line, so that the fuel was continually polished. I had to clean the first filter and replace the cartridge and drain water a couple of times at first--but then nothing for the next year or so. Dirty fuel is an avoidable disaster, and not all of the fuel at the pump is free of contaminants.
