It sounds like you guys are basically starting a real life stardew valley game 😂 Your plans sound incredible! I wish you all the best of luck with this big step. I have to admit I’m going to miss the homey ambiance of your old place!! As far as content creators, I strongly feel that you two align most strongly with my values and what I want to prioritize in life. Homegrown and home cooked food, foraging, respect for ecology, natural materials and most of all love and community. I hope you guys can bring a new vision to youtube for what “homesteading” is about, which is so focused on independence and self sufficiency to a toxic degree.
@HomegrownHandgathered2 ай бұрын
So many people have said the Stardew valley comment that I feel like we need to try playing it this winter! And yea there’s definitely a lot of the hyper-individualistic, antisocial homestead accounts on social media, but the other folks that live like us that we know in real life aren’t like that at all. I think it’s yet another weird social media distortion of humanity. Glad you’re enjoying it here though 😊
@isimerias2 ай бұрын
@ It definitely must be a result of taking the lifestyle to an extreme imo. From what I’ve heard, being ideologically committed to weaning yourself off of depending on society + have content to produce sounds good until it makes you realize *why* humans have developed communities to share labour, resources, and time in the first place ☺️ I don’t watch much homesteading content anymore but I’ve heard of people realizing that they can never have any time off and their entire “independent” system falls apart the moment they get a bit sick and have nobody to lean on.

Would love to do this someday with friends!! Such a fan. Not to be super cynical, but one of the main things that worries me about doing something similar is what it might look like if relations deteriorate between groups on a shared property. You hear stories where everyone is of course all good friends when it starts (and we always hope it will be like that of course) but things happen and it can be a legal mess if things turn sour. If it's not too much info, do you guys all own the plot together or are they separate plots all in the same place owned independently? How much did you have to think about all that legal stuff? Again sorry for the cynicism!! This is a fantastic video and I look forward to watching everything you guys do with this blessing of a property moving forward!!
@brandynash14092 ай бұрын
I’ve seen this fail miserably and I’ve seen this work beautifully! The key to the success I’ve seen is everyone’s core values are the same and they have become more family than friends. They also, in every situation of success, have their own home and space. But come together for the big projects. So, they are more neighbors.
@HomegrownHandgathered2 ай бұрын
Yea that’s actually exactly what we’re doing. We’re subdividing the land so we can each build and own our homes and then farming together, sharing resources and working together on projects just like we have been for years, but on rented land in the city

This is amazing! Congratulations! I would love to see a video explaining more of the process you all went through to buy the land together and what kind of zoning and permitting issues you have come across or avoided. I have wanted to do something like this for years but have gotten discouraged by how difficult the laws in the US can make it to legally home multiple families in multiple structures on the same property. I know much of it varies, but hearing more from those who pull this off is always useful to others looking to do the same!

Im so excited to see how the wheat turns out. So often i see people shy away from growing grains but grains are amazing. I recommend growing hull less barley and hull less oats as well, it really cuts down on the post harvest processing and makes hand threshing a breeze. Sorghum, amaranth and quinoa are other grains that are easy to thresh. Good luck!

@@HomegrownHandgatheredyou can use it in tonnes of ways, its by far the most filling feeling grain to me i think due to its fibre content. I use it whole like farro, in soups, a sweet porridge i just takes longer to cook then oatmeal, it can make a savoury porridge sort of like risotto, and i make a cold barley and lentil salad.
