This may be one of our dumber purchases; a RGB Gaming Chromebook. This Acer Chrome Book is running legit Chrome OS AND it has RGB!? The system actually has decent 12th Gen Intel specs as well as a NVMe SSD. Can we play cloud games and play local games as well?

The screen is about the best you can get on any laptop, let alone a $600 machine. I bought this primarily to use as my daily driver for work because of the screen. Everything I need is web based or Remote Desktop now, so I really appreciate the simplicity of ChromeOS. GeForce Now has been fantastic after hours, but I have a very good internet connection and WiFi 6.

I think that if you want something light, portable, has modern features, a decent amount of ports (by modern standards), and above all a very high-quality screen, something like this makes sense. I could imagine somebody taking this to a coffee shop to work on a writing project, or doing some web development from the comfort of a local park (made possible by the fact that it has a matte screen instead of a glossy reflective one). I dunno, at half the price of an equivalent MacBook, a screen that is at least not embarrassed by comparison, but with many more ports, I can see this being a compelling option. And, yeah, I guess you could do some gaming, too. That just doesn't seem, to me at least, to be the best use for it.

Hey there.. I bought some very expensive Chromebooks (mostly through ebay) a few years back simply because I was doing some R&D. If your focus is on mobility, thin computing (low OS overhead), and you want a premium look and feel, then some of the high-end Chromebooks are very cool. My favorite still is the Google Pixel book i7, 16 GB, and 512 GB model. It's a great piece of hardware but was never worth the cost. There are many places where ChromeOS works really well. I wound up using it for my employees and we were all connected to the Google App ecosystem. Setting up the computer was as easy as logging in.. the rest was done automatically by the OS. Apps and data were all right there each time I may have needed to swap hardware. ChromeOS is not a gaming ready environment. From an educational or business perspective, it has some value and can be very useful and time saving. Cheers Rick

Yeah I wonder about Chromebooks in general..i mean chrome ecosystem is present on Windows, Android. In terms of cloud gaming You can do the same with any laptop with 120hz screen. Maybe 90hz isn't bad either. So Best buy has the Zen book 4 90hz, OLED same processor same RAM or more for 549$ at least it was yesterday. I have the Acer 713 (2020) with 10th i5 8 gb RAM and played Xbox cloud relatively well and better with an Ethernet adapter. Luna games played well as well. I also tried on my PC laptop 10th gen i5 16gb Ram rtx 2060 and it played really well, maybe better cuz of the RAM and processor. Played Doom(2016), Ori, Ghost song, Fortnite (can only be played through browser not the Xbox app on Win or game pass beta on Chromebook). I feel like it was clearer and crisper on my laptop vs the Chromebook even though the laptop is 1080p but 120hz less sRGB coverage, vs 2k 60hz (although I think Xbox cloud is 1080p 60fps max anyways for now). But I agree, unless you're doing GeForce now for the multiplayer it's not that great lol... I think cloud gaming is really good for Indy games, rpg, platformers and campaign FPS/3PS (especially with an Ethernet connection I don't care if you have 6E or whatever comes next, wired will always be more consistent)..but it does play well with WiFi (Ori was flawless). I haven't tried GFN but will burn 20$ it to see how good it is. I will say that 120hz only works in Chrome OS not Android or Linux based on reviews. So you're stuck to 60hz for that if you do steam. Also try not playing in full screen mode.. the same thing happened with my my mouse and Xbox controller in full screen mode.. got all janky but was perfect not in full screen. This is for ppl who are tinkerers but mostly heavy into chrome OS and casual or mobile gamers. Because you can access Xbox cloud, GeForce now and Luna on PCs, android,. Macs and Xboxes. Think portable Xbox series S and portable monitor. I would say that if you're an Xbox and ultimate game pass owner this might be a good compliment if you don't have a PC. But I think cloud gaming can give new life to older laptops and even desktops or Xboxes, now and in the future. GTX 1650 and RTX 2000s will do fine cloud gaming with more RAM and better CPUs and GPUs even though the majority of lifting for graphics will be done server side or virtual machine. But was interested to see some gameplay besides what Chrome unboxed showed on their channel..it does have decent specs that on a windows system would cost the same or more. Maybe we have to open our eyes more, idk... sorry for the lengthy discussion here lol.

So I guess I'll chime in. I'm probably one of the people that this is marketed to. I have several Chromebooks including the base pixelbook go, and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook, both considered relatively high-end with the latter having a 4k screen. Although I didn't pay the market price for them. At that price point, you really decided already that Chrome OS is your preferred platform so that's why you would even look at an above $500 Chromebook instead of a windows equivalent. This was one laptop I was looking at, but I know that that the steam beta is not quite finished so I was going to wait until that was ready for the market and by then the price would likely have dropped. So this could be an eventual purchase of mine . Great content by the way

Just saying if you were to spend the same amount on a Windows Laptop the hardware will be trash in comparison. For someone who has adapted to using Chrome OS full time I am fully prepared to spend over 1000 to get a premium device. I'm totally waiting for the HP Elite Dragon Fly Chromebook with 12th gen i7 to come to Canada. It has everything I would ever need in a device with premium build quality. In my opinion, if an OS does everything you need, you should be able to pay more to have better or premium hardware to go along with it. I'm happy to see more options like this in the Chromebook market.

Hey there guys. I'm a fan of chromebooks. I've bought some expensive units and it's about the experience. Sort of like Razer vs an Acer Nitro. Specs could be similar, but the build quality and experience is probably going to be much better on the Razer. Right now I'm watching your video and doing other work on a Lenovo Yoga 630 4k i5 Chromebook. They don't really make sense for most folks. They are a hobby for me and I still really like them. I'm probably going to get this unit simply becuase it's unique and I'd like to have it for writing and basic light use. I can leave my big computers in the office and just have something to doodle on that's quick and simple to operate. If you want to look at a unit that was WAY too expensive, take a look at the white pixelbook that was the i7, 16gb, and 512gb. That unit was $1600+ lol.. I have one of those too and it's a great little computer. I did not pay retail however ;). Anyway, thanks for the video. Cheers Rick

I see the use case for this. I’m a parent of 2, so for school for the kiddos: it is a Chromebook. It can also stream games from my Xbox ultimate gamepass account / any other streaming services. They don’t need to use my hardware, especially as hardware outdates itself. Yes, the latency can be a thing, but for kids that don’t play competitive games, I sincerely doubt they will notice or even care. Plus, as this is streaming, not running off of hardware, I imagine this will increase the lifespan of the product and it’s (lack there of) components. Honestly, I don’t find this to be a terrible product at all. I say bravo!

I agree with the idea of having a chromebook for the kids for school and to game a bit on the side. Though geforce now is still the way to go if you want anything triple a. Never had any mouse issues so not sure what was going on with there mouse in this video. It’s $450 now. I’m an occasional gamer. I need something with good battery life so I was considering chromebook. I only need a laptop for Google programs like gmail and sheets and for an extra hundred bucks, I figured this was worth it.

Just a followup: This thing is beautiful. This screen is ridiculous at $450. I'm playing Battlefield 2042 with ethernet at like 125 fps. Rare glitches. Latency far better than my PS4. A little better than my PS5. I happen to get 400 mbps, though. Still, I do not regret this purcahse at this price. They basically nailed everything. Keyboard RGB is evend im enough that I can set it to white and not worry about people at work calling me a virgin for having RGB. It just looks backlit. I was considering returning if I didn't like it and I'm definitely keeping it. My only concern is the DAC. Seems fine but I need to listen to more music. Also, the track pad is huge. I keep selecting entire sentences with my palm and deleting them when I continue to type. I'll start using my mouse soon because track pads are awful but it's definitely been a problem.

I feel like someone who does not know much about laptops or pc in general would buy this product and end up having no use for it.Valorant becoming a pretty big game and pretty easy to run would see this and buy it but it could not run val and I just helped somone who almost bought this for val.

3x more I/O than a $1300 MacBook Air, and can game with GREAT wifi or ethernet. MacBook dont even have a basic ethernet port :( RGB Keyboard is a plus! Pretty solid trackpad. I do 99% online / remote work, so chromebook is all I need. Having a Microsoft Office 365 account is awesome on these folks.

I just wanted it for the good screen and that runs smooth and Powers up smooth and has good battery life and that it has a good build quality I don't necessarily need to stream games I don't really want to spend like $2,000 on a gaming laptop I just mostly I'm going to store some pictures on it and my dash cam videos once in awhile also I've never been able to afford a high-end Windows machine so everything I do on Windows seems to not be as quick as I want it to be and when you're just mostly browsing the web on KZbin and Facebook and stuff like that with a bigger screen than what a tablet gives you easy easy way to store a few files because in reality even if someone had a 4090 what do they really do on their PC

So get rid of the RGB, uninstall the game streaming software, and you have a decent chrome book that hopefully doesn't have a garbage keyboard.

There is a lenovo model with an i3 for $400 at Walmart. It has the same display as this gaming chromebook though, which is most of the selling point for this laptop anyways. IMO of all the "gaming chromebooks" that launched, this lower spec $400 is the only one that makes sense, bc it can cloud game just as well as the $650 gaming chromebooks. And there are no $400 windows laptops that can come close in terms of that display, nor any $400 windows laptops that can deliver decent local gaming. However, there are lots of $650 windows laptops that can game locally very well and a few $650 windows laptops with really nice displays similar to this one.

I think you guys should consider target audience when reviewing. Obviously a gaming chromebook for this price range wont be the best machine to play shooting games on, especially if you’re an experienced gamer. For someone who wants to use the laptop for uni work and be able to play RPGs (like me), I’d say it looks pretty good lol.

I honestly feel like if you want a good quality game streaming computer, I would buy an older thinkpad off ebay as it would be a good quality device and would work just as well as long as it has ethernet.. The screen quality will vary though. For thin client applications, the on-board hardware doesn't matter that much as long as it can quickly decode the video stream. I have this kind of setup at home, only with a custom gaming PC running my games on my local network and I really like this application because I can go from my desktop to my couch in seconds. just have to remember to pause the game :) I am a rather seasoned PC gamer at this point and so the extra latency is obvious but was easy for me to get used to as its only about 3-5 ms All that said, I would not recommend services like GeForce Now as your only way of playing games because the server is not on your local network, and thus will have more latency, likely around 20+ ms, which is borderline unplayable for me.
