We Bought the Cheapest Windows 10 Laptop from Walmart: HP Stream 11 Review

It's 12am and your laptop suddenly decides to die on you when you need it the most. Today we are going to make an "emergency" trip to Walmart to buy the cheapest Windows laptop they have in stock and test the crap out of it. We will put it through several benchmarks, including passmark, 3D mark, and unigine heaven, attempt to play Crysis on it, test usability with Windows 10, and even toss in a hint of Linux testing. Nothing was left out for this review. If you're looking for a comprehensive HP Stream 11 review, this is it.
Our test unit's specs: Intel Celeron N3060, 4GB DDR3L RAM, 32GB emmc storage, 1366x768 display, Intel HD 400 series graphics.
I forgot to mention this during the video, but the Walmart staff were actually very helpful. They asked us if I needed help earlier but I was filming at that time and was not ready to grab the laptop just yet. That staff member went off to do other things so I had to wait for him to come around again. It's really my fault that it took so long to get the laptop.

>32GB EMMC Oh god I hate those things, just let Windows 10 run on it for a few months and it will accumulate enough updates/cache files to paint itself into a corner, and then you can't even reset it because there isn't enough space. Try explaining that to someone who doesn't know how to use a computer.

My beother has a 2014 HP Steam 11. I had to install Windows 10 over USB as it was filled, and no matter what I did it wouldn't reconize the Touchpad. Said screw it and talked him into Mint.

my dad had a 64gb dell version of this. it sucked. after 6 months it was full. he removed all of his files and still windows would not reset/update after this. now he has the 500gb hdd. and even though its a hdd it still works just fine for him. he can do everything he wants. windows wont get screwed up. i think all laptops should be end user upgradeable. the ram should always be removable and upgradeable. the hdd/ssd should always be removable. maybe even the cpu/gpu?

My wife has a similar Lenovo which is actually fine for all the tasks she does on it EXCEPT that shitty 32GB EMMC. Since day one, even though I threw in a 64GB Micro SD and made that the default location for apps and OneDrive docs etc, it can not do a single windows 10 update. Even going via USB for the update file, on reboot, it can't SEE the USB until it boots into windows, so the update even fails that way. 32GB main storage is actually "not fit for purpose". Plane and simple, I'd argue no windows 10 device should ship with less than 128GB SSD for primary OS drive.
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 5 жыл бұрын
@samantha tang Yep I hear you. A mechanical HDD is slower though, and wont fit in this form factor, and is more prone to failure. As I said, make 128GB a minimum and charge slightly more, and everyone is a winner. I'm amazed at the lack of performance though. What kind of machine struggles to scroll a web browser these days? I have an old P4 desktop running windows XP that I play about with for fun, and even that doesn't have any issues with web browsing. My wife's Lenovo is actually fine too, and as I said, the spec is almost identical to this HP as I considered both. HP are known to load up their machines with bloatware so I wonder if that is part of the issue? Maybe a clean Windows 10 install without the HP monitoring crap installed would be better?
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 5 жыл бұрын
@samantha tang hmm we dont quite agree. SSD is much better than HDD which is why they are a must have item for an OS drive even on desktops. HDD is great for storage, but running an OS on SSD is the way to go. They do have issues but the pro's far outweigh the cons, and they are no longer expensive because they have become the norm.

I have HP Stream 11 inch which has Intel Atom x5-E8000 , 4GB Memory and 64 GB Storage. I removed Windows and installed Ubuntu. But the processor could not handle GNOME smoothly. So I installed Linux Mint and the laptop is working smoothly for simultaneously running multiple light to medium tasks. Cinnamon desktop is indeed much less resource demanding than GNOME. And since Cinnamon is based on GNOME and Linux Mint as a whole is based on Ubuntu I decided to run MATLAB and Simulink which was validated to run only on Ubuntu , Debian , Suse and Red Hat. But MATLAB's support page states that it may run on any other distribution having kernel above 2.6 and glibc above 2.12. MATLAB is working fine. I have never been so happy for buying a cheap electronic product before.

I had a similar situation with an older laptop that went from Windows 7 to 10. 10 was too much for it, so I rolled it back to 7, and then dropped Windows 8.1 on it. It ran much like the 7 version did and kept compatibility with my programs. With reseller 8 licenses available online, those that want to squeeze a bit more life out of a Windows 7 laptop may want to consider going to 8.1 as it will not reach the end of support until 2023.

One Laptop per Child Laptop costed about 150-200 dollars to manufacture many years ago. And the OS it came with was intended for Kids and had way less features than full desktop Operating Systems. Fast forward to today and one can get a real laptop like HP Stream for 200 dollars ! People should understand that not everyone lives in a developed country. In developing countries , especially under government subsidized programs every dollar of price increase affects the purchase decision. Many Older adults in developing countries may not be that much interested in buying a personal computer.But there are still millions and millions of young people around the world who cannot afford a personal computer because of the price. Computer is like what TV or Radio was decades ago. Even poor people in developing countries need one in their households nowadays.

Honestly, if you’re broke and a student and need something for light tasks for research papers, presentations, and accessing school info, I think this would somewhat do. Some classes have codes or programs that used to make you install, but otherwise everything is done through the net and cloud. What makes them slow is that they bog these computers down with so much bloatwares. Hmmm.. given that it’s an HP.... it might not last as long though. But proper care to anything is always a must. Couple of trusty brands are Toshiba and Lenovo; They are fantastic. Personally, I’d rather go for a chromebook these days. Have had a $200 11inch Toshiba chromebook for 3 years and it still runs as fast as when I bought it new. A used laptop will also do, but there are a lot of risks when purchasing a used laptop.

The point was getting a cheap computer in the middle of the night however. I often search pawn shops older older business class machines. Often due to use, some of them are a bit beat on the outside, yet because of the build still very sound and usable. Most recently I picked up an old Dell, and an old HP laptop set, that had both been collecting lots of dust, each was marked at $125 each, one no longer had a power supply, and the other was locked with no password. Both had dead batteries. I was trying to decide the maximum these were worth to me, and the guy finally just said... how about I just let you have them both for $85 total. I had pointed out the obvious with both of them, which fully explained why they had not sold, but he came up with a price I could not refuse as I was researching the values on my phone... Both are older i5 computers. after a factory recovery on the one that the password was unknown on, all is great! On the other I did need to do a fresh install of Windows 7, and buy a used power supply, (actually bought 2 power supplies and a docking station for $35 used)... So two very decent, older power houses for $120 total, including accessories... a spare computer bought when not needed is much easier to get a great deal on, than a quick must get something purchase however. I really expected I was going to need new batteries and possibly 1 new hard drive, but all is in great shape internally! Really lucked out better than expected, but still would have been great with adding new batteries and hard drives!

If it's not in the middle of the night, and your budget is this low go to a pawn shop. I bought a laptop for each of my children at $150 each. They're not blazing fast, but they were each $500-$600 Windows 8.1 (upgraded to Win 10) laptops with 500GB HDDs, and 8GB of RAM. If you're not as budget strapped there's also really good deals on higher end laptops at pawn shops.

The big issue with this laptop and those who say "It's a piece of crap" "Don't buy, etc" is that they had unrealistic expectations from the jump. If you are going to run Win 10 on it, it is not a good candidate to be a daily use laptop if you do anything more than just check email, light web browsing/youtube, social media. If you want to stay around the $200 price point but want a more functional/productive Win 10 experience you are better off buying an off lease used enterprise laptop from HP/Lenovo/etc. I purchased the Stream because I don't really care for tablets and touchscreen I prefer the feel of a laptop but wanted something smaller that was comparable in size to a larger tablet and had good battery life. I also don't need to run Win10 and prefer running Linux so for me the HP Stream is very good option.

I know the point to this video is to go buy the cheapest laptop for an emergency, but if I had an emergency and needed a laptop, I'd personally shell out the extra cash for a new Lenovo Ideapad S145. They have the i3 model at my local Walmart and I got to play around with it. It's your typical $300 laptop, but it seems to work great, and build quality is surprisingly good considering its price. The model I was looking at was an i3-8145u (2.1Ghz base and boosts to 3.9Ghz), tho a 768p TN panel, 8gbs of DDR4 RAM. that i3, albeit an i3, would be so much better than that Celeron. according to most benchmarks, it's a significant improvement going for that i3. Again, I know the point of this video is to buy the cheapest laptop for an emergency, but I'd personally fork up a little more cash for the Lenovo Ideapad s145 for the usability and so I can have a backup in the future in case something like that happens again. Very good point about the t420 btw. I have a MSI gaming laptop because I don't have internet at home (for those who can't fathom such a thing, I just happen to live on the wrong street, and AT&T monopolizes everything they can, including their own customers), but I wish I had saved the money and bought the t420 and just upgraded it with the i7, 16-32GBs RAM, a good SSD, and a 75-100hz IPS display. Would've saved me from the hellhole known as MSI.

Its small and can be held on palm too if there is no other option. Overall the laptop is not bad. It's a deal for the price. I picked up a similar class machine from Bi-Mart and also replaced Windows for the same reason. Had to download a program to get WiFi working, so this is a common issue. I needed a glitch free machine to use with the DJ gigs. The laptop with a good DJ controller and the DJ program MIXXX works quite well on Mint. Only came with a 120G SSD, but that is fine for quickly loading the program and music library. Library expansion is done with a Costco 230 Gig thumb drive. Loads are a little slower of the songs, but not a problem. Looking to upgrade the SSD soon.

Throwing in the T400 and E6400 into these charts was unfair, as these benchmark tests rely a lot on the device's graphics for their final result. The T400 and E6400 simply don't have the graphics horsepower, but if you're looking at a laptop like this, then you don't need graphics. The Core 2 Duo's in these laptops still vastly outperform modern Atom's and Celeron's, making them better daily drivers if all you want is basic usage, since they can be found a lot cheaper, and a high end Core 2 Duo will set you down about £15 for a T9100.
