Thats not what he meant. What he meant by City also bidding was that West Ham told them that Arsenal would definitely be buying Rice and so they may as well make them pay more for him, so by City also bidding Arsenal have to increase the price they bid. If anything, City are harming Arsenal more as they are making them pay more for someone they wouldve otherwise paid less for.

Your idea that City are trying to drive the price up (while also having a slight chance at stealing the player) actually makes more sense. That’s almost definitely what happened. The claim by Aluko is my problem here

Why would Arteta get Pep to get the board to increase the offer massively when they could just negotiate incrementally and get a slightly decrease price anyway? I’m not explaining myself well, but I totally understand your point and now I understand what you mean and how stupid this Aluko claim is.
