Fascinating seeing all the different elements added to the lake. Keep up the great work!

Love the thought that has gone into the lake with the varied depths and all the little touches to make it a healthy environment. So many lakes that are just holes in the ground. Amazing job you’ve done👌

Loved watching this and gave me ideas for my own land. One question, as it's all in the name of ecology and biodiversity I am surprised to see carp going in. Still classed as non-native in the UK and they do rip plant life to shreds. Wouldn't a mix of native fix (tench, roach, rudd, crucian, perch etc) been a netter option for the lake? Don't get me wrong I love carp, been a fisherman for >45 years and 90% of my fishing is for carp and has since day one before they became fashionable. Just my plans for a similar lake, all be it half the size, I can't quite justify stocking with carp if its truly a eco project.

Hi Peter, glad you're enjoying the videos and amazing to here that you might do a similar project...From my standpoint, its all about balance. If you over stock with lets say "carp" then your going to have a muddy water and they are going to be hard on the ecosystem as a whole. This will also apply if you let the silver population or any individual population inflate too much within the ecosytem. We plan to manage the stocking density (25 carp in 3 acres) as much as possible to try and limit there negative effect. They will play an important indicator species for the lake. We can monitor and identify individual fish to see there health and weight progress far easier then any other species. A healthy lake, should equal healthy fish and nice steady weight gains. Cyprinus Carpio although not native to the UK was introduced in the middle ages and is now wide spread. At this point i personally would class it as naturalised. The IUCN have the wild common carp as a red listed threatened species with the EA only listing the prussian carp as a risk to native stocks. The carp will make up part of a balanced species mix of tench, perch, roach, gudgeon, and pike; what i would class as a traditional UK pond species mix. Keeping this balance right wont be easy.. and we definately have already had some problems so far, but once we get the balance right i think they will fit in well within the ecosystem and serve a good purpose. We have a seperate ongoing project where we are creating a crusian, tench and perch only pool.. not wanting to get the crusian genetics mixed in with Cyprinus Carpio. Although saying that the latest scientific research suggests the crucian was also introduced. The classification of "native" British Isles fish generally means fish that were present before the land bridge between England and Europe was finally flooded.

Thanks for the in depth reply :-) Also just watched the latest video. Loving the progress and guess a year on from what you have shown it must be very different already. 25 Carp in 3 acres is low stocking. Are you planning to control any carp born in the lake? Final question, who designed the lake for you for your planning application and did they provide structural details for the dam? I have two names so far but always worth considering more options.

Yeah its changing fast, we were spotty with the filming after the dig, didn't quite no if we were going to upload it or not or what the plan was for KZbin, so we missed a lot of filming unfortunately. We will do an update video soon were we bring it up to present and explain everything that's gone on so far. Controlling the fry will be talked about in that, what happened and how we are resolving it. Lake design, we got a company in to draw up the planning maps with elevations and what not, we didn't need structural drawings for the dam wall, we went big, it still leaked.. learnt a lot of lessons. Its fixed now.. dare i say it. Everything else was done in house.. always happy for a chat once you get to the design stage.
