We have been taking a break from big building projects in the woods AND from making KZbin videos - But we are BACK!
Back with a brand new project - turning the old, dingy bridge into a beautiful place to enjoy a nice lunch ♡
Keep watching to hear more about what has been going on, while we have been away from KZbin.
See you soon again!
Love and hugs,
Annie & Julian

I don't know if you noticed, but wood tends to cup towards the smaller rings as they age (sometimes you can even see it in "fresh" kiln dried planks). This creates a bowl essentially where the water can sit until it dries up, and that damages it over time more than anything. If you did it the other way around, the water would've just run off and dry quicker. Nice build nonetheless. Edit: If you ask around a little, I'm sure you'll easily find someone who'll take that hay off your hand. People pay good money for that. If I lived nearby, I'd happily take it.

I didn’t notice 🤔 That’s a good point. We don’t want water hanging around. The hay is being picked up by our neighbour, for his garden 😊

Correct in the US we call it "crowning" the board, not only will it cup with the grain of the wood but it will bow with it to. Depending on where and how the wood is being used, we try and always put the crown up so water run off instead of pooling and the bow up so the arch it creates adds strength to the structure and with weight will lay flatter.

Blimey that plastic was the worst possible thing to have put on that bridge as it would just hold the water & prevent the timbers from ever drying out.

So very good to see you both back! The bridge looks fantastic, will you treat the wood to help protect it? Love the idea of having tea on the deck over the river. You will see so much wildlife throughout the seasons, almost as if you have made a viewing platform! Lovely to see you full of enthusiasm, try to limit yourselves as to the frequency that you put a video. We’d all hate for you to take another break from KZbin because you have reached burnout! Think it’s a great idea to impose a no work day or restrict the amount of time each day you work on projects and recording for all of us to catch up with you. There needs to be balance I all our lives, there’s not that many of us realise that before we are too exhausted to carry on or what started as a fun project becomes a monster that we just can’t wait to finish but the finish line seems so far away! Really is so good to see you both back.❤

It is always so easy when your partner is doing all the hard work of demolition. Thank your lucky stars that you did not have to rebuild the supporting structure of the bridge. One thing that would extend the life of the bridge would be to stain the bridge with a semi-transparent stain. The color redwood is usually always available and easy to find so when you need to restain the bridge you can find it easily.

those big boards in the barn could be used on the bridge to double the thickness of wood under the tire footprint---very common here in Canada on logging bridges etc----would make a substantialy stronger bridge I think.

I remember having my squad (4 bridge launching tanks) build a bridge out of wood 8 guys and 2 days. I did the joints and made the wood dowels. Nails were used to join the 2x12's together for the deck. We had enough 2x12's to go across the span on end. We sized and squared up the logs the first day and demolished the original structure. At the end it was enough to hold 42 tons or we drove a lancher tank over without a bridge. Still four 14x14 timbers under a 12 inch thick deck can hold quite a bit. The funny part, many rural bridges in PA have the steel beams under them with 2x8, 10 or 12 on end for the decks. Like in Salt Springs State Park In Susquehanna County that the township repairs. Now I did put some 4x4 cross members in the top of the 14x14 beams for installing the side rails. I just looked at Google earth and it seems like someone put a metal roof over it. I can remember telling the old man that owned that property about putting a roof over it to keep the weather off of it.

I thought, "Oh, NO!" when she explained how they were laying the crown of the board down instead of up. I'm not an expert, but from what I have learned from observation, the boards should have been reversed. Now, I'm wondering which way is the "best" way for longer life of the boards.

I’m no expert either, I guess we’ll have to see what happens then 😊 Love, Annie

You could build a micro turbine to produce your own power for free. Connect a generator to the turbine. Use the generator to charge batteries. Use the old water mill structure to do it with.🤔🤔

PS I see that the wood was pressure treated - great. You perhaps could consider some 'chicken wire' along the tyre tracks to also try and minimise skidding (or something better).

Yes. Good eye! I did a little “speech” about it for the video, but it became a little long and probably boring - so we left it out. 😄 Chicken wire on the bridge?

It would be nice to be able to incorporate a Water Wheel to remember the Mill and make Hydro power with it as well.

I worry about that bridge, especially if someone tries to drive any sized car over it. Definitely doesn't have enough structure to support a car, especially with the rot I seen in the wood going across the river. Barely has enough structure to safety support your ATV and a trailer with a load in it. Not trying to be a jerk, but I'm worried someone will get hurt. That lumber spanning the river wouldn't even pass building codes for a house's floor structure since it's so thin and spaced so far apart. Really should get a building expert out there to inspect that bridge for your safety.

Hey! Thank you for your concern 😊 We’re not planning on driving any big car over it - or even a regular size car very often at least. The crazy thing is, our neighbours drove their car over the OLD bridge. We are not experts, but we thought it at least is better now than before with the rotten wood. There is no rotten wood in the bridge now. Only iron and new wood. Sending love, Annie

The boards should have been 180 degree turned as you will have now 'cupping' boards over the long time due to shrinking..

@@AnnieJulian of course. It’s dangerous. I’m surprise you have to travel through it to get to you’re property if it’s private. It is a wonderful little area and I’m glad you have access.

good work ... did you consider a bridge from stones ? that could have been EPIC and would definitely handle whatever you throw at it and probably last for centuries
@AnnieJulian
@AnnieJulian Ай бұрын
Thanks 😃 Honestly? No 😄 That would be pretty. I don’t really know how to work with stones. Especially if we have to lift them by hand 🏋️‍♀️ But you’re right. They last forever. Unlike wood. Love, Annie

@medyoub-uj5ut Ай бұрын
@@AnnieJulian you don't need to lift them at the row size you can always split them ... if you managed to plan this so well, i'm sure you can plan this one out too ... stone bridge once it's there u'll never need to worry about it .. the learning curve may take some time but totally worth it

did you secure the boards to the rails themselves? Or ot is floating for? Also I would have put stabilizing paint on the rails because of the rust., Finally, do you plan on putting a protective coating on the wood as it doesn’t appear to be pressure treeated.
@AnnieJulian
@AnnieJulian 12 күн бұрын
Hello. Thank you for your questions. Yes, you can see wooden planks on the sides of the iron train tracks. So it’s not floating. The wood is pressure treated, and when it has dried for a year, we can treat it with oil. Love, Annie
