I think if the area of air cushion it created was larger as well, think about it like trying to hold yourself up on a giant inner tube vs a tiny one requires higher pressure therefore harder for the leaf blower/holes system.

you need to create a skirt around the bottom , and wear the blower on your back and get a loger tube down to the board. a hover craft builds pressure under the board and the skirt keep contact with the ground letting just enough air to escape too make it float . also your blower might be under powered
@kirleyq1394
@kirleyq1394 3 жыл бұрын
Such a cool idea 🙂 A couple suggestions: 1. Make it so the board has a thicker/round skirt so that the air has somewhere to go and inflate, I don’t think this setup had enough available inflation volume. 2. Fewer but larger holes towards the center will help with mobility. 3. Possibly find a smaller/electric powered blower to reduce weight. I can’t wait to see version 2. 🤘🏼

larger holes will only work if they add the skirt, otherwise their best chance would be many small hole to the point where you aren't losing too much pressure
@AgentWest
@AgentWest 3 жыл бұрын
Couple of things: the board was a bit too small for the weight of a person. But more importantly, the "skirt" (in this case the plastic that is supposed to keep air under the board) is all sorts of wrong. Typically when inflated it is supposed to form a nice sausage shape around the perimeter with excess air flowing 'in' under the board. So in short, more slack on the plastic and larger holes closer to the center! At least the leaf blower was plenty powerful :) If you guys are going to re-build the thing i'd recommend using a small inflatable boat for skirt (can even recycle a punctured one!) since it's already the right shape. Place the boat flat on a piece of plywood, trace it, go 'in' from that line on the plywood about 3-4 inches and cut there. Attach boat to what will be the underside of the craft, cut round holes on the inside of the boat, close to it's bottom, cut air hole in the middle of the craft and plumb the blower into it (doesn't even have to be blowing directly into the hull). Get on the craft, fire up the blower and hang on! If everything works well the craft should raise a few inches off the ground and be rather easy to push around since there won't be much material in contact with ground, unlike that "pillow" that formed in the video. Fly safe!
@aaroncrowe8380
@aaroncrowe8380 3 жыл бұрын
More plastic. You cut off all the extra so there's no room for an air pocket to form under the board. Look up video of hover craft and how they lift up when they start up.

i built a miniature hovercraft for a school project in 8th grade. it was about 12 inches in length and i encounter similar issues to what you were experiencing. I resolved it by moving the holes drilled in the bottom to the inner half of the air sack. this created a negative air pressure under the hovercraft creating lift. I believe this would fix your issues! Been watching you guys for yeears, cheers from PA! :)

your skirt needs to be larger and at least 2" from the edge... somewhat baggy. your skim board will work. I live in Richmond, Ca let me know if you want to retry this. I built a couple of these in middle school and dragged one behind a 4 wheeler at 30 mph until impact with a curb. it's basically tubing on the street at that point. you have all the right materials you just need to tweak the ratio.

Hey guys I'm not a scientists but i am a master carpenter. 😊👍 I think maybe the 1x4 board on the bottom is too thick and raising the board too high off the ground. I think maybe if used a 1/4" piece of plywood in it's place would help. It would make the board closer to the floor causing the air pressure to increase and possibly make the board rise. Also try to glue some kind of rubber lining around the bottom edge to create an outer concave. Think of an air hockey puck. It floats so much better due to its concave design. It essentially creates an air pocket in the middle causing the air to burst out the sides which lifts it off the table and the constant airflow keeps it going! I hope this helps guys! Keep up the amazing content!!!

I made on of these years ago as a kid and here's the best way to do it... Materials: Plywood, leaf blower, duct tape, thicc vinyl tarp 1.) Get a flat sheet of plywood and cut out a circle (2.5-3ft across) which works even better than a rectangle or square! 2.) Cut out the tarp and make it larger than the piece of wood, leave roughly 6 inches of extra tarp on the edges. This is where you guys went wrong. I could see that the tarp was too tight underneath the board which did not allow enough of an air pocket to form. You need enough tarp so that it is not too tight, otherwise the air pocket can't form. (Think of it as a dome filling with air underneath the board) 3.) Adhere the tarp with duct tape or a staple gun or you can use both ( be sure that the tarp is not pulled too tight so you have a nice "half dome" shape when air is being blown into the tarp before attaching anything to the middle of the board) 4.) Cut out a circle piece of plywood roughly 4in-5in across (this is the piece that will be screwed into the middle of the board to help create that nice air pocket under the board and create a donut shape) 5.) Cut out three quarter sized holes about 2in-2.5in from the circle you just screwed in so now you have a donut shape with multiple holes around the center circle. 6.) Plug in you leaf blower and let it rip! I hope this helps you guys with HoverBoard 2.0!

Here’re my long-winded thoughts on how to make it work for reals. Flat board and skirt, no plastic. Basically take a plywood board, put 1”x1” trim (size doesn’t rly matter) all around the bottom side of it, so there’s a ridge to trap the air (and make those strips neat, seal the gaps between them). You’re basically building a box with one side open, which is facing the ground. The idea is to make it so that the air you’re pumping into the box can’t escape and builds so much pressure that the air trapped inside is pushing in all directions (specifically, down towards the ground and up at the board) as much as possible. To start, I’d put it on flat ground and see how flush it all sits. Once it looks flush, wax the bottom of your skirt strips. Once you get it seeming like it’s working without somebody standing on it and you do go to stand on it, you’re going to be increasing its load but also helping to seal the board to the ground, so you should wait while still revving it at max as it builds up more pressure and have somebody push or drag you. I’m not familiar with leaf blowers but I’d figure they’re literally just fans on a motor’s belt. That means that they can’t maintain pressure higher than their own output that well (like it can only stuff so much in before it feeds back behind the fan). A compressor might work better. They tend to be heavier, though, and you’ll have to stand on the board for a while as it builds up pressure. To use a compressor, you would detach the motor from the tank that it assumably comes with, and use the board as the tank. Maybe you could put the compressor on a gocart, put an air hose from it to the board, and zip tie the air hose to the tow rope, so the hose doesn’t get dragged along the ground? That would save a lot on weight and would probably be easier to set up. I think it would work with a 5hp compressor for sure.

You need to add a skirt around the bottom that inflates. If you only have holes the air leaves the easiest spot rather than spreading out over the entire base of the board. Myth busters made hovercraft that were bigger but are similar. So just add a few inches of fabric(maybe something less porous like tarp material?) Staple it on the outer edge of the board and add a cord on the bottom open end so that the skirt bends in so that it can keep the same shape no matter the direction you go

A hovercraft works by creating a high pressure area under the craft. This is achieved not by the momentum that the stream of air directed down carries (what you guys tried) and more by sealing the area around the craft with a skirt. By pushing air under the skirt, you get a high pressure area (a distributed force on the bottom of the craft) that is pushing upwards.

Yo i think if you got tubing and split the air output and put 2 feeder holes and had the air bladder on the bottom bigger so theres more air to lift you up and the vents should be near the edge of the wood not underneath. Then it will pick you up when its inflated. But youll need a stronger blower too. Probably like a Stihl or a redmax. Those 2 have high mph for the output. Or try modifying a walk behind blower.

I would love to see you guys actually pull this off and I would like to offer some tips, I took UziDan's comment into consideration and looked up hovercrafts. The one that stood out to me was the SR-N1. What caught my attention was that this hovercraft doesn't have a skirt around it it seems to rely more on the air coming out of the center of it out of one hole. It looks like you want more of a wide board, You're probably going to want a board that is flat to the ground and light. You are need more power and or less weight. also don't use the the plastic. You don't want to think of it as air hockey you want to think of it as a hovercraft. You might even need to use two leaf blowers. Don't give up on it after mach 1 and don't just drill a bunch of holes in it whenever it doesn't work the first time, haha. Sometimes you gotta take a second to think outside of the Box.

Extend the hose to the leaf blower like 10' or more so it doesn't add the extra weight to the board. Then you can have someone wear the leaf blower and walk with the guy trying to ride the board. Also you could add multiple leaf blowers, like one front, mid, and back. I think it's just too much weight for the amount of air. Reduce the weight and crank up the air supply.

You should have put the blower in the exact middle to evenly distribute the air mass blown from the leaf blower. But I do honestly think you need a lighter blower and/or a stronger blower. The weight of the board chosen could be another part of why your experiment went wrong. My equation to help make your experiment a better one, lighter mass + stronger blower = successful hover board. Also I think was the car company Toyota or Subaru made an anti gravity board that really works. They made a video on KZbin and it should still be there. If not I saw a website that also had the video. Look it up and I’m you’ll find some more help/motivation. Best of luck with your experiment @Brailleskateboarding.

I feel like they saw that one King of Random video where they tried to make one, actually 2. They used a battery powered leaf blower and a plug in one, if I recall correctly. They found the battery ones didn't provide enough power to get the air cushion they needed I think they also just used flat wood platforms. Not sure how much air the gas blower puts out but that might be an issue along with the platform.

So on those hovercrafts they inflate a bubble skirt that only goes around the edge of the bottom and it lets out the air into the cavity in the center only. That forces the air to expelled under the skirt and the ground so there's a tiny layer of air between the skirt and the ground. Think basically of a long balloon like those ones you make animals out of but it just wraps around the edge of the board on the underside. If you pump air into the cavity it has no where to go except between the balloon circle and the ground

Hey, I think you're on the right track with a lighter board, but the backpack blower would probably work, if you had a bigger bag underneath it to be able to inflate, and lift you off the ground a little bit higher.

needs some skirts around the edges to trap the air and create lift.....weather stripping, bike inner tubes, something like that

Flick harder. You really need to point your toes down and then flick your ankle really strongly.

Also the bag underneath needs to actually be slightly baggy enough to inflate slightly. You have it waaay to tight so no air can actually get into it.

Need a much much bigger "bag". Look up the Marine Corps LCAC. It might be possible to push with it but it would make it unsteady.

@brailskateboarding your cushion the plastic on bottom is not enough. There is no clearance. It should be at least 3 inches tall to support your weight and clear the floor as it has to fill cracks and anything else you glide over. With that more small holes in the backside will push you first and that's where you would or your back foot. And a small gathering centered where your front foot would be so there is pressure where you're weight is. The motor is strong enough the board isn't optimal but will work. Get ahold of me I can draw you up easy plans and you don't use anything more than you did on the first one.

I think you should put trucks on the backpack/motor part of the leaf blower and angle the tube 90 degrees so its not putting all it’s weight on the skim board. Then whoever is riding it can hold onto the motor and put most of their weight on it and the motor will just roll alongside while the board hovers.

The way you show how to do all the exciting tricks nd especially for the beginner is awesome, I actually get inspired by you a lot 🙂 even I get 1 for me, nd get pain on my feet by pushing while getting habitual to it,can you tell me what is the actual weight of genuine skateboard, because I think it's feels heavy sometimes to me.

Bigger holes about 1 inch to flow but and something just a bit bigger. It has been done. Mythbusters did it using a tarp for the skirt.

(Experience) take off the trash bag and get the bottom as flat as humanly possible. Gett all of the tape and other burrs off so that you are left with a perfectly flat area. The tube cannot stick out the bottom. Just let the leaf blower hole be the only hole that passes the air through the bottom. The air will automatically create an air pocket small enough to hover a fraction of a milimiter but enough to decrease the friction and give u a hovering experience. This type should withhold any weight. (Make sure that the leaf blower type is sealed to the board otherwise the air will leak out through the seam)

If you can think of a way to cyclone the air it would have more force going down and not disperse as quickly. It would probably take a lot of trial and error and thinking outside the box. Try working out some blueprints and imagine the physics and what is happening to the air. Hope ya'll get it :)

You sealed off the airflow with the bag. Just leave the hole and put a skirt around the board underneath to evenly distribute the air and boom you're set.

Why not make fittings in the biard for an air compressor then make the air vent towards thr ground to push you up , itll dam sure work with 1800 psi propelling you from the ground, add another vent to propel you forward

Yeah I bigger and flatter board but I think the skirt is the main issue. I think it should be just one big hole on the bottom and a looser skirt maybe.
