It's funny how you guys mentioned AINZ, because author of overlord and Tanya are friends and you can even find overlord poster in episode 2. Tanya is not evil, she is just doing everything in the most efficient way, for example she sent those 2 guys to work in that place and allow people who worked there come to front line, in this way she satisfied everyone, but those 2 died.

i never got why people say tanya is evil. she's a soldier. her country is being invaded on three fronts. what is she supposed to do then? if she let some soldiers in to kill her soldiers and her people, would that make her "good"? i'm not saying she's the best person. i'm just saying that her character seems like what most human beings actually are. many of us just do our jobs 😂

Much like WW1, in this war, you really cant tell who good or bad since everyones just about the same level of mad. Tanya, shes brutally realistic and embracess the madness. Just consider it a clusterfuck, about the only way to go about this.

Actually it was clear, that Empire was a good guy in this story. The whole conflict started when nordic forces just brazently walked over the empire border by the order of their government (to try to get a reaction from empire) then it all went like a swonball down the hill...

I'm reading the Light novel. It's awesome. The second episode is more than 50 pages in the novel. There's so much more about the characters' thoughts in the books. The first light novel is 300 pages. The second volume is 400 pages. Japanese authors deserve more recognition. Here's one detail from the light novel that isn't mentioned in the anime. Tanya was really weak, and even had difficulty moving and wrestling in military academy. Even guns were hard for her to carry. But when she started to understand how to use magical equations properly, she started to use it for everything. When she punches or kicks, she is using magic. Every movement she does is enhanced by magic. Plus the magical devices are quite interesting as well. They are kind of like computers that receive "magical formulas" from the mages and amplify the effect of these equations. So they need to be really good with understanding physics.

Even if Tanya were just regular in her powers being smaller means her equipment doesn't have to work as hard to propel her so she's faster and can go higher, then add in her OP powers and she can out fly everyone.

The anime really sometimes goes out of it's way to make what were gray acts outright evil. Sending the two insubordinate soldiers into the pillbox is actually a mercy in disguise. By disobeying both their superior and their superior's superior multiple times in and out of combat, they have already earned themselves a death-sentence by Imperial Law. In fact Tanya would have been entirely in her rights if she had not listened to Serebryakov and cut them down right there and then in the tent and nobody would have bet much of an eye at it. Even with their insubordinate actions warrenting a death sentence, Tanya still opted to merely have them dishonorably kicked out of the army and sent back home in disgrace (but alive), but they refused that offer of mercy. At that point most other officers would have brought them in front of a war tribunal which would have almost certainly ended with them being executed. The consequence of that would have been that their families would have gotten nothing and likely ended up ostracized by their most patriotic neighbors. By dying in the line of duty, they get a two-rank posthumous promotion, their families get full benefits and they are regarded as heroes who gave their lives for the fatherland. Not to mention that in the book Tanya shows NO emotion at all about the news of their deathes. The evil grin is entirely anime-exclusive. The title itself (albeit already happening with the book) is also a gross mistranslation... or rather re-branding. The original is just called something like "War diaries of a girl". For a bit of context: The story happens in what in our world is the inter-war perior between the world wars, except in their world there was no WW1. So that conflict is in many ways a mix of both of our world wars (like a mix of WW1 trench warfare with WW2-style tanks), but for that world it is "The great war". Magic, among many other uses, is also able to completely counter the phyiscal addiction part of drugs, so many mages use something like speed quite freely - Tanya notably not among them. She does however use magic to enhance her own senses and dampen her own fear, which often results in a combat high not unlike one gotten from taking narcotics. That's why she's often so gleeful in the middle of battle. She does not enjoy battle in the last while clear-headed.

it's not really ww1, this is sorta an alternate history where WW1 never really happened in 1914, instead popping off in the 1920s, so it's not really ww1, as a lot of the tech are actually from inbetween ww1 and ww2.

the war is actually based off the First World War, not the Second. The Rhine theater is based off of a place in France called "No Man's Land" where both sides sent soldiers across a flat field trying to get to the other's trenches to kill their opposing enemies. Countless people died, an estimated 4 million dead within 5 months of fighting. Note the No Man's Land in WW1 spanned about 475 miles and was not a localized area.

TANYA IS NOT EVIL! The original title is 'Youjo Senki' which translates to 'Young Girl's Military Record'. In times of active war, ABSOLUTE obedience to superior officer orders MUST be maintained. Showboating like those two do, can not only endanger the current mission, but can threaten the safety of not only the entire squad, but as the actions of one squad, creating an opening for the planned (but not divulged) advance by another entire force, can endanger dozens, possibly HUNDREDS of other soldiers. In most ALL active war zones, a blatant disregard for direct orders, compounded by an openly stated intent to further disobey orders would give the commanding officer the right (nearly the DUTY) to execute the offender(s) on the spot, as they have, at that point, clearly stated an intent to represent an ongoing threat to the security of ALL of the soldiers working in the current field of operations. Frankly, Serebriakov, by stepping in to intervene COULD have bought herself a trip to the brig as well... Tanya's decision to send the men to the rear as pillbox soldiers was frankly pretty lenient, as if she'd written a full report and sent them back, they'd likely have been executed on a Court Marshall for insubordination and possibly treason. Her decision, based on the idea that pillboxes are stable targets for artillery, was a calculated decision, and she figured either she'd never hear from them again (as she would not be offered the pair again for her squad), or if she DID hear about them, it would be news of their death. Either way (them serving a frustratingly boring term, or being killed), they were no longer her problem. And hearing they had died merely satisfied her (appropriate) rage at their insubordination. War is Hell. You either follow the orders you're given, and further the plans of the top brass, or you die. Your choice.

Chaotic-neutral is not what she is, lawful neutral is much closer to her, I say this because chaotic neutral folks tend to act out their impulses and change their tune with the drop of a hat without any care for rules or laws. Tanya has a long term goal and she has big respect for law and order and is quick to punish those who break the law or disobey orders.

Being X is the most evil being in this show. Demanding acknowledgment & even reverence. Tanya is thrown into a setting where a girl would be so vulnerable if not for her previous life’s memories & mentality. Sure sure… Tanya is “evil”… but what would you do? Be “good” in such a setting… where Being X intervenes at multiple instances just to force her to worship? I feel like she’s just doing her best to survive & provide herself a favorable life. Her country is being attacked from all directions. Sure… it’s the Empire’s fault… sure……….. but those attacking aren’t “good” either. Love this anime! Good adaptation of the manga 👍🏻 love the manga even more!

I think calling Tanya evil is an overstatement. She does have low empathy and is possibly sociopathic (which doesn't necessarily mean evil). She has strong ethics and judges herself at least as harshly as she judges others.

tanya isnt necessarily evil, the japanese title is something like "little girl's military records", they also have these like, drugs that enhance their mental combat mindset or whatever it is, which may be real i think? good amount is based off of real events, and i kind of just watched it like "ok", but if youre like, a history fanatic or a... war fanatic? then youll like the show

I wouldn't call Tanya "a villain" in a war, good and bad usually tend to mix up and be unclear, especially in a war you don't really know anything about sure, Tanya doesn't seem to have regrets or anything about her actions and she clearly is a savage, but still not really enough to call her "villain", in my opinion
