When the father initially put his foot down and told his daughter this was an anniversary trip for just her parents, she should have shut it, backed off and even apologized for presuming she could weasel her way in. Daughter is the a-hole, and the wife/mother borders on being an a-hole by conceding when she knew better.

The guy is definitely NOT the A-hole! A person shouldn’t put their expectations on another person, and be rude a forward enough to invite themselves with the expectation of her parents babysitting while on their 40th wedding anniversary trip! In a heartbeat I would have done the same thing by changing the plans. Sadly so the daughter sounds very self entitled and selfish, plus childish for not speaking to her parents after the trip. She shouldn’t have gone on the paid for trip if she felt so strongly about the outcome! On another note, thank you both for sharing your lives with us, I absolutely enjoy watching you two🥰

Hi Hanna and Shane from North Dakota. I have been watching and 100% enjoying you videos for at least a couple of years - this is the first time leaving a comment. We have/had 2 young women with disabilities and find it so refreshing to hear the honesty of life with challenges and those that care and love unconditionally. When you do your book tour and should you decide to come to North Dakota, we would be front and center. Am sure you've already thought of this but will throw it out anyway. If you'd check with the support agencies in each state you visit - would get lots of people tha 25:26 t are dealing with the same issues as you - to come and be part of the event.

Good luck on your Book Tour - may you have much success with your sales and your trip! The troll story and library meet-up...so sorry for the angst you had to endure. Amazing what you go through when being famous! Finally, It is so hard to know the all-round dynamics of such an extended incident that was described in the final segment of your podcast here. One wishes everyone could do the right thing each moment...perhaps the best lesson is to remember the story and try and catch ourselves to do the right thing in the moment. Thanks as always for your sharing your lives. Your humor and good nature is always uplifting.

Preach it, sister! It sounds to me like mom and dad were wishy-washy like this when they raised Jane, letting her get her way far too often, and now Jane assumes she can get away with it. Such unmitigated gall she has! And I agree that dad handled it poorly, almost passive-aggressively (which may be another trait that runs in this family). Bad decisions all around! Daughter should not have invited herself along, especially when told this was a special anniversary trip. Once the parents agreed to have the daughter and family come...they should have honored that decision. To change plans at the last minute AND not tell the daughter is more than rude. The Dad is NTA. He could have canceled all the travel arrangements and just rebooked for himself and his wife. Instead, he decided to ensure both he and his wife had the 2nd honeymoon they originally desired while still gifting his daughter’s family a vacation. It was extremely presumptuous for the daughter and SIL to assume her parents would babysit - especially considering the purpose of the trip was to celebrate her parents’ 40th anniversary. Daughter and SIL are entitled AHs, Mom is a pushover, and Dad had difficulty with boundaries.

You two are my favorite comedy act. I adore your banter so much. How harrowing yet ending funny was that story!! NTA: We ALL know this daughter, either from our family or someone else's. She's the one who is always angling for herself. She's taken advantage of nice parents MANY times before, no question about that. They know her. Dad also knows Mom and had he told Mom, she would have felt bad and told daughter and there would have been a huge fight and the vacay would have been ruined. He gave his wife his intended gift of a great vacay with the two of them. In this case, with this daughter, it's better to ask forgiveness than permission because no permission would have been given and they would have been stuck on vacay with their grandkids while daughter and her hubby were off having the great time Mom and Dad SHOULD have been having. So no, NTA and it's high time this daughter had to deal with the No. She was told NO in the beginning and hassled Mom til she relented. Now she'll just have to get over it as it's already done, they had the fun vacay they originally planned, (and daughter actually GOT a vacay too) and should not care at all that daughter is mad. It's her own fault for not caring one wit that Mom and Dad deserved a romantic 40 year anniversary trip by themselves and not being grateful she actually still got a vacay too. I'm sure she'll find plenty of other things to horn in on and get free things as she always does. That's my take. NTA. The daughter is TAH.

The daughter and son were and remain the a-holes. They shouldn't have invited themselves. They shouldn't have repeatedly pushed the issue until the parents relented. This is clearly the daughter's historical manipulation, or the dad wouldn't have felt the need to do what he did. The dad knew his wife wanted the field trip but was worn down by the daughter. Yes, as Shane said, it might have been good to let everyone know sooner, but the dad knew if he did, it wouldn't have turned out to be the great second honeymoon that it was. The dad even says money was an issue, so it wasn't like the mom and Dad had the option to replace their own trip. They would have been babysitting their ungrateful daughter's kids again, with no couple trip to look forward to.

Jane and her husband who wanted to tag along for a free vacation and to use the grandparents as babysitters knowing it was their 40th Anniversary, were the A-h. The father just wanted this Anniversary to be special . The mom of course broke down because she always gives to others and wants to make sure everyone is happy. So, the father decided to give the kids what he thought they wanted, which was a free vacation, but also do something special for his wife. This trip was about the two of them, not a family vacation and for Jane and her husband to take that away and think the vacation was going to be all about them and use the parents for babysitting service on their 40th was so very selfish ...

I can’t judge theme because I had a similar incident after my first grandchild was born. She was born in Minnesota in October and they had 36 inches of snow still on the ground at Thanksgiving. My husband is from Michigan and we were going to drive up over the 4 day holiday, he was used to snow. My parents wanted to see their first great granddaughter. THEY decided they would rent a motor home since my Mom had health issues. I really didn’t want to change our plans and they didn’t let us know they had already rented the RV. We went and were there for Thanksgiving dinner with my daughter-in-laws step mom and our son and new baby. The weather news peas on and lots more snow was predicted for the day we were to start home. I was furious when we had to leave the next morning! I went for my little granddaughter and I had not had enough time with her! I pouted in the rear of the RV all the way home Looking back I realize I was the a___ hole. My Mom saw her first grgreat grandchild 3 months before she died. Seeing her was the highlight of my Moms last few weeks. There is always two sides of each story. Keep on mak😊ing everyone laugh. I wish I could be at a book signing but I live so far in the country in Texas that you would have to come to Waco, TX for me to see you.❤️

The dad is the AH. People are presuming that Jane pressured them, but it never says that. It says she asked, he put his foot down, and she was a little sad. We don't know what happened after that. All we know is that the parents DID decide to have a family vacation. If it got booked and paid for, the dad agreed. It wasn't behind his back. He could've spoken up if he disagreed. At that point, that was the plan. Making a huge change last minute and not even telling your wife is shitty behavior. If you're unhappy, have that DISCUSSION with your wife BEFORE agreeing to take a family vacation. It sounds like the dad is afraid of confrontation, so he took a sneaky way out. It really rubs me the wrong way. They should've said no initially and left it at that. If Jane didn't speak to them after that, THEN she'd be the AH. That's not the story we were told, so, with the known facts, the dad is the AH. He needs to learn better communication skills. I keep thinking about the grandkids. I was soooo close with my grandparents as a kid. If I thought we were taking a vacation with them, and then they didn't show up, I would've been heartbroken. Also, when my brother and I were little, we didn't take family vacations without backup from a grandparent or aunt/uncle. I don't think it's unreasonable to feel more comfortable with help when you have young kids (non-teenagers). The daughter may not have wanted to do the trip without her parents. She might've preferred to do it at a later time instead. That would've been an easy way to handle it- "we are going alone for our anniversary, but next year a family trip sounds great." (It didn't have to be fancy). I think wanting a 40th anniversary trip to be private is completely reasonable and how it should be, BUT they decided on a family trip. At that point, the way it was handled was selfish.

I'd love to meet you two. Sorry Shane, I agree that Appetizers would be best and easier to mingle and not just meet people at your particular table. I have spina bifida and my husband doesn't have a disability. We just celebrated 20 years of marriage last week. I love hearing about your travels and can relate to your daily regimen.

Oh, you guys! What a stressful day! I don't understand why people think you are not married or are scamming in some way. That AITA happened to my mom. She was invited to go to Spain with some friends. They had two kids. Mom paid her own way, got her own hotel room and was excited to see the sights with her friends and their kids. The friends asked her to watch the kids one day as they wanted some alone time and she agreed. pretty soon the parents started leaving the kids with her every day. Mom realized they invited her just to watch the kids. She ended up telling them she would not watch the kids and she took off for another city. and having a fun time in Spain alone.

Oh yes, it ‘s a yes from me. I’m with Shane 100% on this. The grandfather was sleezy to change plans last minute and not tell anyone. It was his, or the grandparents responsibility to set boundaries with the adult children if they didn’t actually want it to be a whole family trip. Yeah I’d be pissed if my parents told me yes, it was planned a family trip and then backed out last minute. Nope nope nope! As someone with kids, I can see the desire to have parents come along. Again if they didn’t actually WANT to come then it’s THEIR responsibility to hold that boundary, not just say they will go and back out last minute and not even communicate that. Coward move. I get why they haven’t answered calls and texts.
