Look up Brazil they use it ethanol is not as bad as you think for fuel. The oil companies lied that food price rise was caused by using it as fuel. The type of corn used is different than the one you eat after they extract the ethanol from corn the byproduct is feed for cattle we produced so much of it the price dropped. Even if ethanol cost more I would rather give the money to farmers than send it to some far off land.

Thanks for sharing this amazing video when it is clarified the properties and benefits of algae. It even seems to be a productive solution very soon for problems such as global climate and lack of artificial resources. Here algae arise as a natural component capable of giving oil, food, and ultimately, and most importantly, renewable energy.

Because if we do so, in a short time, many bad things can happen.For example: If many of these algae find their way into a lake or an underground water reservoir with lots of nutrients and animals, they will multiply alot and start using up all of the oxygen, thus killing the animals. Correct me if I am wrong.

Surely simply switching to Algae based Petrol and diesel would be better for the environment than electric vehicles and scrapping all the current perfectly serviceable vehicles? Has to be, as you don't have the emissions from 1 scrapping the old serviceable vehicles, and 2, making the batteries and everything else required in production of new vehicles. From my point of view, it makes much more sense to keep combustion engines but simply use clean Algae petrol and diesel in them.

Hello Seeker, I wrote my bachelor thesis about biofuels, so algae are quite interesting for me. On the one hand, the idea seems nice to have a fast and easy growing fuel crop, but on the other hand, I asked myself, how expensive it is, to remove all the water before the oil extraction can take place. Furthermore, the ratio between oil and algae is very small, isn't it? In the conclusion of my thesis, I couldn't decide whether each of the single fuel crops I described, could be THE solution for the alternative energy production and wrote, that a multicultural plantation of different plants would be the best (especially for the biodiversity). What do you think: Do algae have a promising future? Thank you for the informative video! :)

I live in Northern California and the lake here (Clearlake) has a massive problem with algae. The smell is awful when the summer days are long, hot, sunny. We all want a clean lake to enjoy recreational activities etc. Apparently a company from (Japan?) Said they'd be able to remove all the algae for us. For free. They planned to use it for producing fuel. Our wonderful county, Lake County, said NOPE. They wanted the company to pay the county to remove the algae. So here we are years later with a summertime bog of eternal stench and still wanting a nice lake to enjoy.

The history of the suppression of biofuels is an interesting one. Henry Ford was trying to circumvent John D. Rockefeller who at the time had monopolized the fossil oil markets. The break-up of that monopoly did allow Ford to move on to the better fuel economy of the petroleum fuels and the market for alcohol recovered from the folly of prohibition making the farming sector happy. Various government subsidies for "mineral" extraction were and still are to some degree messing with the economics of our oil based economy. Mining in general has never paid the full price for the destruction of land, and often watersheds it causes, while government aid in numerous forms continues to prop up those industries. While these biofuels look good based upon our current engine technologies which developed around the petroleum based fuels, they would probably look even better if we developed our newest transport engines around their best ratio of energy output to sun light input. And therein lies the true efficiency conumdrum. All energy (save nuclear) is solar energy. This biofuel does short circuit the fossil fuel cycle where long periods of storage in the earth gives oil and gas its peculiar concentration which then seems to be "found" and thus confers profitable ownership under a long history of special case legislation. It may or may not be the best way to "Mine" the sun for transport energy. Perhaps directly storing the energy in better batteries with more efficient PV arrays will allow for electric propulsion for everything. The race is on. What a shame. Our laws still stultify much of this development because most entrepeneurs prefer a source they can control all the way to the marketplace and sunlight is so egalitarian that it is everywhere.

So many people regurgirating the same: "major oil companies would shut it down". Exactly what are you imagining they would do? Did the coal-mining companies manage to stop the fossil-fuel ones from expanding? The reason we don't have this yet is because it hasn't been scaled up enough; it might be difficult to grow the algae (I've been in the lab *today* trying to get algae to produce more oil), or it might be that small businesses aren't subsidized, and few people or other companies/private persons have invested in them

I know oil companies can be quite evil (read the paragraph below this, if you're interested), but yea: there's no conspiracy theory about shutting down competitors, and if the competitors are good, the oil companies might actually rather buy a share in their business and thus support it So, now for some very new information about the evils of oil companies. Today I was at a show where PhD students presented their assignments. One of them worked with an oil company and presented her newest solution to how to extract more oil. What they want to patent and use, is coated silica nanoparticles, which they will pump into the stone that the oil is extracted out off. This will increase the amount of oil they can extract by quite a lot. When this was presented on stage and the host of the show then asked "aren't there some risks to the environment", the answer of the "mastermind" of this plan was to laugh it off and say "I think it's better for me to just go backstage". I guess that many people there didn't quite understand what using nanoparticles involved, as they really liked the idea. To explain the problem: nanoparticles are very hard to contain and clean up, so if they are released into the environment, they can't really be cleaned up well at all. What effect they will have on the environment in the sea is also unknown, although quite a few studies have been done on the toxicity of silica nanoparticles and adverse effects were observed in most cases. To mention though: this nanoparticle idea is not something new, but it's scary that someon would be willing to use such methods of oil extraction when the clean-up is nerly impossible and the envoronmental side-effects can potentially be quite serious. Still no conspiracy to shut down competitors though.

this is why i dont evever believe in full ev automobiles. you press the oil out and can power a diesel motor with nothing added. you can have algae farms in the desert of say southern California , New Mexico, Arizona and Texas without any major impact on the land. algae farms can also be used vertically in polycarbonate cylinders which can be used in citys. finally there is at least one research program with a algae farm next coal or other fuel power plant and they capture the exhaust and pump and bubble it in to the algae pools. Therefore capturing some of the pollutants before they ever get to the atmosphere. i wish the technology would grow faster then it has been.

200% SMUG No to Gentic Engineering, if we have learned anything about creating a Sustainable future it is use what we already have, whether it is finding Algea with the naturally highest Oil content and working out what nutrients, gasses, temp makes that Algea produce the most Oil. It’s a low tech solution, pls don’t spoil it by high tech technical fixes, and producing GMO Algea that the products from would release GMO into our environment!. We don’t need GMO Algea anyway as we can already make a lot of Oil from the Algea that’s naturally( organic) occurring!

Re EV we simply don’t have the time or the renewable energy to replace billions of vehicle with EV that also rely on Lithium that is destructive to the environment and requires hazardous chemicals, also it’s non renewable, whereas if we rolled out PBR in every town, village, city and neighbourhood we could make enough clean burning Carbon Negative liquid fuels while also producing other products such as supplements as Algea is high in Omega 3&6. So we could use all the vehicles we already have and by driving with Algea fuel we would be taking Carbon from the atmosphere, instead of pumping it in!. Also if some incentives such as are given to fossil fuel companies was used to kick start the private Algea fuel industry, and used army engineers to help roll out PBR, we could be off Petroleum Vehicle fuels in a 5-10 years!.

I really wish more people understood the carbon cycle, its grade school science complicated but I end up arguing with collage graduates, who claim they care about the environment, on how any plant based global warming gases are not contributing to the environment. Seriously, they are worse than religious zealots, going around yelling SCIENCE, SCIENCE, SCIENCE, with no understanding of how things work, parroting science studies with no understanding of the review and duplication process. In Powerplants we use also Biogas, coal and dumpburning. Could we Filter the CO2 and CO trough a pipe filled with algae and sunlight with the CO2 we get oxygen and the algae transform it into sugar and Oxygen.

ethenol has a higher RON rathing the standard petrol. alot of performance cars run pure ethenol because of the power gains. the down of ethenol is that it has a very short lifespan before it goes stale. when it goes stale it turn into a jelly like substance that pretty much kills your car. Find the algae that can collect the most carbon and then use it as storage so pump the algae into old emptied oil fields also could pump to bottom of the ocean and settle with and evenly covered by sediment.

There was a plan to use the algae from Lake Okeechobee Florida to make Bio-Fuel but was stopped because of Big Oil!

If the end product is oil identical to conventional means of production how will this decrease the pollution caused from burning the biofuel? Wouldn't it pollute similar to our current fuel?

No. It's a carbon neutral production method. No additional pollutants would be released.
