Since a lot of people seem to lack the context of this scene: The germans are not the ones surrendering here. They are offering the british soldiers a chance to surrender, as they were heavily outnumbered and deep in enemy territory. The white flag held by the german soldier is not a sign of defeat, but a sign of coming in peace to deliver a message. The British would end up losing this battle. This also makes the British response so much funnier and explains the surprised look on the german soldiers face, considering these men had just signed their own deaths.

The Paratrooper with the umbrella is like all the other characters of *A Bridge To Far* based off of a real paratrooper I forget his name, but he really did carry an umbrella with him into combat. The reason he did is quite funny, he was terrible at remembering the codes they used and got so tired of trying to remember them he gave up doing so. Instead he started carrying an umbrella and when asked why he did it his response was (and I’m trying to remember this correctly) “Because anyone carrying an umbrella on to the battlefield can’t be mistaken for anyone who isn’t British.”
@CarlosTehJackal
@CarlosTehJackal Жыл бұрын
The officer with the umbrella is Major Digby Tatham-Warter (or at least based on him). After being captured at Arnhem he escaped from the POW hospital and with the help of the Dutch resistance made it back to Britain with 150 other British soldiers.

Apparently he took out a German armoured car by jamming the umbrella into the view slot and poked the driver in the eye. Quite a few stories about him.
@maxschaffels2164
@maxschaffels2164 Жыл бұрын
I should like to add that Major Digby Tatham-Warter was also a deeply honourable man. For instance, he is responsible for making sure one of his KIA fellow soldiers received a Victoria Cross (highest recognition for bravery and gallantry in the British forces). While he enjoyed his blood sports, like tiger hunting and boar sticking, this did not make him stand out among his peers at the time. What did make him stand out was that even though he raised a police force at his own expense during the 1946 Mau Mau Uprising (and fought the Kenyan Kikuyu independence fighters on several occasions) he outspokenly supported racial reconciliation and believed Africans had the right to self-government. After Kenyan independence he would devote much of his time to the development of the community around his two estates in Kenya and was quite the concern for British Intelligence because of it. Frankly speaking this was entirely extraordinary for the time. And by the way, about that hunting hobby? He would be instrumental in developing the modern concept of safari which is recognisable to us in the current day, where we rather prefer to photograph animals rather than shoot them. The thought cannot escape me that he had enough of the killing. A truly great, albeit deeply eccentric individual!

To the people who need a little context… the allied forces were completely outmatched and had no chance of victory, the Germans were offering a kindness by being willing to accept the allies surrender. This is why the German is so confused when they say “we can’t accept your surrender”… he’s like “wait wut… we want you to surrender or you’re about to be annihilated”. It portrays the classic “stiff upper lip”, bravery and wit of the British soldiers. This movie is based on a true story too.

Major A. Digby Tatham-Warter really did carry that umbrella into battle. He carried the umbrella because he had a bad habit of forgetting passwords, and he figured any sentry that saw him would reason that "only a blood fool of an Englishman" would arm himself with an umbrella. He used the umbrella in combat, managing to jam it into a German vehicle's vision slit, poking the driver in the eye. In the film, he's given a different name, and is killed, but in reality, was wounded, captured (and treated for his wounds) by the Germans, escaped and managed to make it British lines.
