You’re very right; nobody would be weeping and wailing about the children of Gaza right now if Hamas had stayed home on Oct. 7th/23. And it is actually possible for good people to care about the children on both sides. But as long as these two children are still prisoners in Gaza, can we not even talk about them with some“whattabouter” troll immediately invading the conversation? These children, their parents, and all the other hostages being released, and Hamas surrendering, would immediately and dramatically improve everything for the people of Gaza, children included.

If Hamas cared about its own, they would not have held hostages in a densely populated area near the market to avoid casualties. But all this was done on purpose, as was the fact that weapons and entrances to tunnels were located in hospitals, schools, and mosques. They knew that in previous wars the Israelis had never bombed hospitals or mosque schools. They do not spare their own, but on the contrary, the more victims, the greater the pressure on Israel.

There was a horrendously cruel Hamas propaganda video they made way back in November, in which they told Yarden - who was kidnapped separately from Shiri and the kids, and is held separately from them - that his wife and children had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. But they've provided no proof of their deaths, and all four of them are still officially considered living hostages by Israel. I think all the hostages are assumed to be still alive unless the IDF has sufficient evidence otherwise. I hope to God they all are. Part of the complication is the uncertainly as to whether Shari and the kids are being imprisoned by Hamas or by another terrorist group in Gaza, Islamic Jihad. The IDF had some intelligence early on in the war, that the latter was the case (in the video, it seems they're being abducted by civilians, like many of the hostages were, then "sold" for a bounty to Hamas or other terror groups). So the Hamas leadership may not even know where they actually are, and were completely bluffing when they made that video.
