Thank you for watching our video! The count down is still on till we leave on our journey, but this is a big moment for us. Did you like how she looked in that gun metal grey? Should we keep her this color in the end or what color do you think would be the best? Also, what do you think about the design of the boat now that you can see her with her mast and in the water?
@MrHelmuth1

Yes, keep the color scheme, eventually “make a statement” by painting the verticals on your “house” in a darker gray

I'm not fond of any gray color for a boat. It's a no-color for me. But that's your boat and if you like her this way, then it's the best choice!

I think alu boats should be painted. We paint steel and wooden boats to make them attractive and I don't see why aluminium should be some kind of exclusive exception.

Since your boat is probably now very top heavy, have you considered adding temporary ballast to keep it from rolling over on the trip South? Something easy to remove maybe sand bags or 55 gallon barrels filled with water. I like options and also plan to have a short vertical lip added to back edge of swim platform so I can clamp on my outboard motor for emergency use.
@lahakai

We will have lots of cargo on the inside so it won’t be totally empty. Including our construction equipment, paint cans, etc. We have received lots of questions about weight distribution so we will be putting together a video on this soon so we can explain the nuances of how we balanced everything. Keep an eye out for that! We are debating how we will use the outboard engine. Clamping it to the platform is a good idea.

Looking back that was such a funny moment! We were doing so many things at the same time that when we looked up and something didn't look right, your head goes to the worst place. Turns out the installer thought they could just rotate them but the spreaders had to be fully removed and flipped.
@steveraleigh100

@@lahakai Yes, it's funny when that happens and then you second guess yourself. I was watching one YT yacht build (won't mention which one) and I thought the installer was installing the boomvang upside down. I thought 'no, they know what they are doing'. then later, it was the right way round. Question everything that doesn't look right.

It's not done ! Wow if you only knew, I had a steel 50' cutter-rigged sailboat , the work is never done. I suggest drill all the holes your going to drill in the steel and finish all the welding that is needed , then disassemble everything down to just the steel , and here's were the fun begins, start in the bow sand blast all the way to the stern with out stopping as soon as that's done start with the epoxy primer , stem to to stern and then the outside same thing ! Top coat inside and out then reassemble ! And then you've got about 10 years and you've got to do it all again ! I didn't have the energy to do it twice , I sold mine at the 8 year mark ! I got out just in time , but I'm rooting for you I can't wait to see your finished boat sailing and experience some of the adventures you're going to take ! I'd say good luck but the truth is it takes hard work and a little bit of planning and a giant chunk of cash .Have fun people !

Think you are doing an amazing thing, in reclaiming "Lahakai". The repairs and work you have so far put into her make her definitely yours. One important fact to always remember, hind sight is always 20-20, never second guess yourself. I will be following the rest of your journey, as I follow "Yuba" and about 66 other sail channels. I get as much enjoyment out of seeing rebuilds/builds as I do the actual sailing. Take care, be safe and live YOUR LIFE your way, continue with your dream.

You might consider installing some internal ballast to get your displacement up a bit. Being empty of her interior makes her sit high in the water and raises her center of gravity increasing her tendency to roll. Fairwinds and calm seas.

If I am at sea needing rescue I want a color easy to find. Gray is way down on my list of preferred colors. I also like to be unique and there are too many white boats. Maybe a diagonal strip on the hull like the US Coast guard and some easy to see color edges on the deck and cabin top and sail.

The new topsides and dodger have modernized the look of the boat plus it looks sharp in gunmetal grey. I can just see dark tinted windows too, with a steel boat if you want fewer below the water hull penetrations later you can use a single sea chest but you also want to be able to get weed and shell growth out of them so they can be larger. KZbin "Odd Life Crafting" to see an example

@lahakai
@lahakai Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! We've had many thoughts about this as we go along. If you've been following our story, we didn't expect to have this much construction when we started, but when pandoras box was opened, there was not much do to but to finish the job. That being said: Time wise we are still significantly lower than it would take to build a new boat (counting actual construction time). Money wise, you must take into account that the location of our build makes a big impact. Cost of things, price of living, labor costs, are all different than say the USA or Europe. Not counting the fact that we have had some setbacks that were about logistics that were a result of the miss lead original sale. This build is still cheaper than building a brand new boat in Brazil. Now, we were in this project not to just have a boat. We really did want to build something and learn about all aspects of a sailboat. A little less construction on the hull would have been nice, but perhaps that was part of the learning process 😛

I'm guessing the mast protrudes into the cabin, versus just fastened to the cabin top, but it loos to be the latter (rigging supports it)? If I heard correctly, you need to replace the rigging every 10 years or was it also in bad shape? ;-)
@lahakai
@lahakai Жыл бұрын
The mast is deck stepped. We show all the modification we made to the mast and upper deck in episode 9 if you are interested! The original owner had the boat for 10 years without changing any rigging. We even found a turnbuckle inscribed with a date that was older than the boat. Sadly we lost it. Nothing was in bad shape though, the boat had been sitting for the decade unused. But it certainly was time to get new everything!

just a stupid question: why didn't you bring it to the sandblasters on land on the back of a truck?
@lahakai

Not a stupid question at all! So moving by truck to Santa Catarina is about 700 miles away passing through steep and curvy mountain ranges with poor highways. Our boat would also sit very tall on the truck bed so the height would be an issue in some places. Not only would it be cheaper to go by sea, we also liked the idea of a good adventure!

Helt otroligt att lägga ner så mycket arbete och pengar på en en så liten båt som är ett vrak! 😝

Are you leaving those monstrous davits on? It looks like a structure poached off a fishing trawler, it's so big and looks way out of place. It really does nothing for the looks of that boat

Sell the sailboat as is and buy a river boat at Belem or Manaus. Start hauling supplies to settlements on the Amazon and other rivers.

Thought it when you renamed a boat and first put her in the water you're supposed to christen her with champagne?? I don't think you'll like the battleship gray color when you are living aboard in hot and humid climates.. I personally love a dark blue boat with a gold stripe or silver and a buckskin or white deck..

😆 this is kind of a false start since she's still under construction. So, we thought we'd keep the champagne on ice till she's officially done. The color really isn't very dynamic with the single color grey, a stripe or something would definitely break up the monotony. Lot's of possibilities still!

I like the idea, the drive and the ppl behind this project, but the boat is and always will be one of the ugliest and most impractical ever build. So why? It is as my mom said, some like the dad and some like the son ...

WHO WROTE THIS DIALOGUE? I am sorry and do not want to offend, but it is terrible. You do not get this diatribe on successful KZbin channels. Try being more natural and less from a terrible script. So much better when you spoke to the camera from the heart and not the script, and the second half was so much better than the dribble in the first half.
