And why do we still allow a gill net fishery in the lower Columbia? Guess that's another discussion.
@TeamGoneCatchin10 ай бұрын
Just to add a little follow up context here about the seasons that WDFW and ODFW set. In this particular area there was a quota set of 670 “slot” limit fish to be taken. The allowable size to be harvested is 38 to 54 of fork length, we cannot keep the “big” ones. The departments regularly conduct mark recapture studies to track the population in the pool and determine population class sizes. If there was decreases within populations or sizes, we would certainly see further restrictions or closures. There’s also a large tribal fishery conducted in the pool as well. The departments adapted a Monday, Wednesday, Saturday season to avoid an overage of quota taken. The breaks in the season allow the catch to be tallied and then also gives notice to the anglers if the fishery needs to close quickly. 89% of the quota was caught on the 1st day, record setting numbers, but it also fell on a major holiday that had perfect weather for fishing. This allowed only 1 other day of fishing, a weekday with substantially less people showing up. The shortest the season has ever gone was 6 days of fishing as wether and temperatures in the Columbia River Gorge can have drastic effects on anglers showing up to participate which did not occur this year. These fisheries have proven to be sustainable with sound management policies that have kept the quotas and fisheries consistent over the years. Yes, many fish died in the 2 days of fishing but not outside the tolerable allowances to keep the fishery going into the future. Another item of note is the sturgeon populations allow for a incredible catch and release fishery that goes the entire year. As much as people want to keep them, they are an absolute blast to catch and release with an extremely low mortality rate due to sportsmen handle. If you haven’t experience a good sturgeon bite, you’re missing out!

I sure miss the 2200 fish quotas and the TWO months worth of retention. Actually I miss it 20 years ago when the quota was around 700 and it was open year round with basically no pressure .
@coleomo10 ай бұрын
wonder if we up here in BC will ever get something similar to this, Fraser river sturgeon have been closed for a very long time to any retention. But i dont know the science and politics behind why it would or wouldnt be a good idea.

I liked Cameron's pre-dawn discussion about the balance of fishing and the number of fish. With the growth and popularity of fishing, I hope we don't get to the point of fighting to kill the last fish. Yes, I'm one of the guys that has fished for over seven decades in Washington, and has memories of the "good old days" when you could walk across the water on the backs of fish (well not quite). It's easy to point fingers and play "coulda, shoulda, woulda" about the past and who's at fault, but we really do have problems that must be addressed, or our kids and grand kids may live to see the last salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and on, and on.... Here's a thought, let's talk about it find solutions, instead of pointing fingers at each other.

In addition to catch-and-release seasons, why not treat the sturgeon fishery like a quality elk or deer hunt? Have drawings for a biologically-determined number of one-fish sturgeon permits. There are just a tremendous amount of good fishermen with top-notch gear and boats now. The demand is becoming greater than the supply.
@TeamGoneCatchin10 ай бұрын
As fisheries keep getting reduced, even outside the sturgeon fishery, sadly, this may be the option.

I think the states should come up with a limited entry permit for all you guides like us Gillnetter have. Come up with a set permit number and a release date and time so you guides can buy one. This fishery proved one thing and every one of you should think about it. Quota is set from both the states that allow keeping fish. All you guys that fished it did that and it still wasn’t enough for you guys. This is no different from the salmon fishery so once you meet the fish that is set for your fishery and you reach it you are put on the sidelines. If you want to beat it and point fingers bitching about it won’t ever work. Blaming a certain group of fishermen won’t fix it. Point the finger at the problem and with everyone fighting for the something thing then you get change. Keep on getting on and tight lines ppl
@TeamGoneCatchin10 ай бұрын
The problem is, a gill netter is a commercial fishermen that is paid by the killing of fish and bringing them in to sell. A guide is paid for a service that does not require the killing of fish and take sportsmen that participate in the fishery, fish kill or not. Imagine a guide fishery being separate from the rest of the sportsmen where we sit on the sidelines, allow the privates to kill their quota, and then go fish..... You'd have sportsmen fishing both sides of the seasons. Also, you limit the guides from the fishery, they are still sportsmen and go fishing, catching quota even though they are not "guiding" Unfortunately the gill net lobby keeps trying to beat the "commercial guide" drum but the reality is, it's sportsmen that catch the fish, even in the guide boats, and it's sportsmen that catch the quota.
@wabowhunter8310 ай бұрын
@@TeamGoneCatchin true, until we reach out quota and magically the nets get theirs plus some . Imagine if we got by catch ... How nice that would be .
@HookedonKings50910 ай бұрын
I appreciate the efforts of educating people about fishing. But it’s become such a zoo with guides on the rivers that when the working guys get a chance to fish the quota has been met. Guides shouldn’t be allowed to take people out to fish for endangered species. Just my opinion but open minded people should understand what I’m trying to say.

I love the channel but I still think it’s bullshit. They close it early because I had over $300 into a trip that just got canceled because the fucking ODW decided to close it.

Why do you keep so many wouldn’t one decent size fish feed a family? The reason they stopped the season is too many fish kills.
@IMKINDOFABIGDEAL1310 ай бұрын
It’s per license not per boat.
@neilforbes108210 ай бұрын
I understand that. What I’m saying is too many fish are being killed that’s why they closed the season. I’m not saying people shouldn’t keep fish to eat but it’s a finite resource. I have fished with old guys who said 50 years ago it’s fine to take a couple of hundred fish they will never run out and now they go out and are lucky to catch 5 or 10 fish. Go figure.

I love you guys but it makes my heart sad when people bonk these dinasaurs. The internet is awful for this particular fishery. These fish could easily be entertained, inspired and educated into extinction. I hope the state has its shit together on this fishery. Doesn’t seem likely given the plight of Salmon and Steelhead in the PNW.
