My mother grew up in Joplin in the 50's and 60's. She told us stories about the Spooklight about seeing it. In the early 70's, there was an old store at the East end of the road called Spooky's. The owner had all kinds of photos and newspaper clippings about it. I've been out there dozens of times in my 52 years and have only seen it twice. Awesome video!!!

For over a year now I have been a fan of your work. (I absolutely loved your coverage of the Ozark Witch's Grave last year!) Your daughter has an archaeologist's eye and that warms my heart. I am an archaeologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Anthropology Dept), but I also teach a lot of cultural classes. One of my classes that I created is Anthro 2220: Spirits and Souls: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of the Supernatural, and I always cover the Joplin Spooklight. Your summary and coverage of the light is best I've heard. My husband, my grad student, and I are offering an archaeological fieldschool near Springfield, MO this summer and we will be camping out with our students on a ranch. If you find yourself in the area please let me know. Y'all have an open invitation to visit us. Unfortunately KZbin will not allow me to post my email address but I am easy to find on the web ~ Christine VanPool MU.

Devils promenade is where I normally stop for a break when taking a short cruise out of town. There’s was a TON of Spooklight activity up into the 90s. Then the frequency of sightings started becoming less & less over the years. Sadly it had become SO popular they finally paved the dirt road & posted no parking signs. Yes, I’ve witnessed it & it looks almost like a softball sized dim ball of yellowish gas/lightning. Bright enough for being noticeable, but not really illuminating anything around it. The federal government studied it in the 60s. Then unsolved mysteries came out in the early 90’s. Great work on the videos 🤙

Those of us who spend spend a great deal of time in the predawn outdoors, look forward to seeing a big, bright Venus-rise to greet us on a clear, dark morning and are not at all frightened by it. 🙂

@@BakerOverland Ha, I was actually referring to the news reporter who mistook the planet Venus for the spooklight. You were correct in that what you saw were headlights originating from Quapaw, where E 50 continues after it chicanes around the river. And no mystery as to why the lights disappear when approaching them, that's because there are only a few points on E 50 that are high enough in elevation to actually see the distant lights, once you go down a hill, you simply loose your direct line of sight. Everyone who has studied this has come to the same conclusion by simply observing fellow researches signalling their headlights. I can attach sources for several of these investigations if you are interested, or you may just want to tell me to jump in a lake. 🙂 But hey, great video style! And I still think the spooklight is very cool. For me, knowing how the lights are produced doesn't take anything away from how awesome it is that simple car headlights can produce such a cool effect on a dark Ozark night.
