Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 56
First of all, we hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving!
In this episode, we add our final layer to the bulwark except for next to the superstructure/the windows as that is where we are applying a big change to the original design of Yabá!
We had been imagining this change for a while but now we can finally see it applied to the boat. It is exactly how we imagined it...or even better. We can't wait to completely finish the bulwark because the next steps are going to be amazing and look epic!
Enjoy the episode and have a great Sunday!

We are forever grateful to everyone that is living our dream with us ♥️
💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

I'm 64 years old, and live in Houston TX... A disabled Vet, with way to many health issues... When I first stumbled on your build...I thought y'all were insane...Sorry...no disrespect meant... I questioned whether Yaba would ever float again, and thought it would be better as firewood... Again I apologize... But as I've watched these guys work their "Magic"...I came to realize just how cool this build is, And Yaba will be... I'm old school myself, and love taking something old and wore out, and rebuilding and restoring it, and giving it a new life... One of my current projects is a 1988 WellCraft Center Console Bay boat that I'm doing a 100% ground up restoration... Granted most of my work is fiberglass...But none the less it's a project that I'm excited to see finished... keep up the great work...

Don, there is no doubt that Yaba will ply the seas again, but not as Ben and MP originally envisioned. They said in the beginning of this series that they wanted to sail around the world, and Yaba will not do that, and if they try, it will kill them. See the two ships behind them? Those are day tour boats, the same design as Yaba, from the deck on down. A real sailboat needs a keel below the waterline to offset the sails. Yaba has none, nor do these other boats. They are, at best, motor sailboats, boats that primarily rely on their engines to get them where they want to go and not their sails. The sails, truthfully, are for nothing more than show. While Yaba had concrete in her bilges for ballast, if they replace it, it will not offset any lean that any sort of wind will put into her from trying to use a sail. She will capsize if they try to do that. The basic hull design is not that of a sailboat, but a coastal cruiser. While Yaba will be refinished, and when it is refinished, Ben and MP would do well to sell it as quickly as possible to a company like the one that owns Capitano Gancho and Fantastico behind them so that it can be used for day cruises. That is what she was designed to do, not to sail the 'ocean blue.' Yaba is not a bluewater boat, and never will be with the hull she has now. If Ben and MP try to take her out into open water and use the sails, they will need to be contacting the Brazilian Coast Guard to come get them out of their life rafts!

I love the fact that these shipwrights don’t have the most modern tools and equipment, but they still get the job done! The fact that you brought this boat in for repairs, and ended up rebuilding the entire boat goes a long way. I can’t wait to see the end results. That boat was very well constructed to last for years, based on deconstruction.

Your doing so well as a solo presenter and I am continually impressed with the quality of the shipwrights work. I have a comment on the bulwark remodeling. There is a peice installed that is like a dog leg shape, this could look really good if the curve on the top of the timber matches the bottom. I think it is in keeping with the design of this beutiful vessel and demonstrates even more that you are not compromising on the creative elements as well as the structural ones. I am so captivated by this monumental project and the way you both take it in your stride. I Look forward to the next installment, we'll done once again MP. Stay safe J.

Concerned about the height of the bulwarks, are there going to be safety lines in the area that will allow for looking at the ocean but not falling into it. ACCIDENTALLY....
@Mark-zi4dd
@Mark-zi4dd 3 жыл бұрын
Safety lines are certainly required for the lowered bulwark areas, my other concern would be shipping green water through that lowered area. It will literally add tons of water weight to your boat and slamming into the deck house, windows, and roll aft toward the cockpit and hatches. Unless you only plan on sailing this boat in sheltered harbors when it heels over in a blow you might be asking for trouble.

After looking while the work is going on is that they/ you have lots of sawdust everywhere and with water sealing and painting a good cleaning would be good. Maybe a “leaf Blower(gas or electric)and good hvy duty Wet or Dry shop vacuum” could be a thought for you guys to discuss. They both can come in handy later while at sea or a marina.? And MP you have been doing an amazing job .. thanks for keeping it going and sharing y'alls journey with all of us .. .. now .. all that said .. and admittedly I am not a shipwright .. but I would have left those bulwarks alone for the added strength and protection from the waves hitting your windows/ports and the wash .. but that's just me .. I don't know how much blue water or any crossings you guys might be doing with your ship .. so take my opinion for what it's worth .. I'll just say that even when I had my old 45' Hartley I was glad for all the protection she could offer when storms popped up unexpectedly .. even out in the Gulf of Mexico .. Y'all sail safe and blessed ..

That black ship next to Yaba, is really cool. To bad you can't take us on a tour of it. I can hardly wait to see your ship when it's done.

I think you're doing a wonderful job young lady and I thank you for taking the time to film all this and bring us along. Things are coming along nicely and Yaba is really taking shape. You'll have a truly magnificent home when she's finished. I know you miss Ben but please know you're doing an excellent job for us and that we as well look forward to his return, albeit not as much I would imagine... HaHa Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

These boat builders are incredibly good at what they do. You are very lucky to have them doing all the work on your boat. This journey is very interesting and enjoyable to watch, and I'm looking forward to every episode of it. I thank you for sharing all of it! Greetings from Norway!

You've done a great job while Ben has been away. Yaba is looking great on the outside and can't wait to see the inside being done.
