18 years ago after deciding to give complements more often, I got my car's alignment fixed and forgot to compliment the mechanic on his interesting eye color. When he left a voicemail about additional work the car might need, I left one in return which was "No Thanks" to the work, and that he should take off his glasses more often to show off his eyes. He called back and we set up our first date (which we celebrate as our anniversary). That compliment has brought me more joy than I could have ever expected.

@amandawilbur451
@amandawilbur451 3 жыл бұрын
@@gumija same here, and now that my 9 year old son is also being really harsh on himself I figured it was time for a change. So at dinner we each give a compliment for someone else and a compliment to ourselves. Some days are harder than others, but once you get started it gets easier and we're all a little bit more positive about ourselves now. It also motivated my daughter to do something that she was anxious about because I told her if she tried it that it would make a great compliment. It also doesn't have to be big and all encompassing baby at the center of the universe level complimenting either, some days its just as tiny as having accomplished a simple goal like taking out the trash.

Andy Warhol said something once about acknowledging the awkward before anyone else does. It’s a useful tactic. Sometimes when something might sound weird, just start the text with “this might sound weird, BUT I really wanted to tell you...” or “This might be out of the blue, but I was thinking of you and I appreciate “blank””

Many people aren’t good at receiving compliments. The proper response to a sincere compliment is, “Thank you”. I hesitate to compliment sometimes because some people will argue and make me feel bad for saying it. For example: Compliment: “Nice shirt”. Response: “ Really? I literally pulled it out of the trash.”
@rukbat3
@rukbat3 3 жыл бұрын
I was scolded about this once when I was a kid, and it really made an impression on me. I learned that when you reject a person's compliment, you're not just "being humble" the way you think; you're actually questioning their judgment in giving you a compliment in the first place. It's much better to accept the compliment at face value, which has the benefit of making you feel better as well.

@@aslmad1 It definitely leads to more compliments (as well as that sense of I don't want to do that again cuz it was so hard to get them to agree to anything :/). My response to op was that, if they pulled the shirt from the trash, then clearly they have good taste! And thanks for saving the environment, that's really cool of them! And thrifty. Etc. All genuine, but leaves everyone feeling worse and like nothing should have been said at all in the first place.

There is a really good book called "How to Talk so Kids and Listen and Listen so Kids can Talk", that Anna Akana talked about in one of her videos that I have now read thanks to her. In the book, the authors point out that we, as humans, we are not taught very well on how to speak compassionately towards one another. We don't listen well and respond with, how Craig put it, "me mememem ME me me me me". At a young age we aren't taught to give compliments to people, or acknowledge correctly people's problems without giving our own feedback. It's a good book and this is a great video/experiment that everyone should do every day.

I took a personality test. What I really remembered was it stated I held back my affection. So I started being more affectionate to my immediate family. Saying I love you, hugging, giving kisses on the cheek, if I sat next to them. I would lay my head on their shoulder or encourage them to lay their head on mine. It felt very werid to me to do that. At first, everyone keep giving me the "what do you want" side eye. I told my mom I love you with a hug and a cheek kiss. She actually cried. Saying she felt I didn't love her as much as she loves me. All my relationships, have gotten closer. Especially, my kids. I have noticed they are more confident, laughing more, and so far every other day we watch a movie. We all take turns picking a movie. They show me what they like. I show them movies that have always stuck with me through childhood. We are all are more affectionate.

About the complementing your friends thing, Mike Falzone taught me that if you're thinking about someone - let them know! It's a really nice complement to say "hey, I just thought about you (because of...), hope you're doing well", it shows that they matter and that a friend values their friendship!

Wheezy, I have realized that much of the paranoia around complimenting people or friends relates to overthinking it. DONT OVERTHINK IT!!! Everyone appreciates compliments, whether you have never seen them before or whether you have known them your whole life. Even if they respond harshly, complimenting is an act of kindness that even bitter people recognize as “good.” It definitely helps you get out of your own head, and that is something that contributes to happiness

A few years ago, I realized I liked certain people because they were supportive, genuine individuals and then I realized I could show that to others by complimenting them. I started doing that along with being a decent listener and offering to help when I could and I have a big group of genuine friends now in my 50's. I still need to compliment more but what I realized is that many people aren't comfortable with it and probably need it more than we realize. I also saw a Tweet about complimenting the next 4 tweets you see to spread goodness in the world, so I did it. It was nerve wracking, but most of the responses were little red hearts or an, "oh gosh, thanks so much." It was a good experiment. Love the video, as always!

My 4 year old son and I are watching together and when you did the flash back at 6:10 to say "It does make me look like a good person because I'm promoting random things" He YELLED (uncharacteristic for him) "But you already ARE a good person!" So, you have my compliments on doing a bang up job of being in the graces of my antisocial child. 🖤😁

I'm a big f***ing complementer, I'm really a serial complementer, even to people I barely know. It's true that it is a little bit too humbling and you'll always find people that put you down and/or people that aren't really into being complemented (especially by another person with whom they don't have a close relationship). Having said that, I'd still recommend to everyone to do it anyway. People who actually like it tend to bond with you so much faster and it all feels way more natural than a 'normal' relationship. Besides, being humble and a good person to be around overall are awesome traits.

Craig, you prolly dont know me but I am a grad-student, who, like you, is a human and has a wife and a french press, and has so much in common with you except prolly not that much in common with you. But I do work on the creative aspects of content creation for a team that makes videos for youtube and social influence of a social and political nature. I watch your videos to learn about creativity, content delivery and comedic script writing and editing. You have literally influenced the way I think and talk with people as well as my editing and script writing. This video, like so many of your videos, has a really deep principle that I appreciate you taking the time and effort to flesh out. For how much effort and time this video prolly took to make, I am inspired to send you some thanks and compliments that are long overdue... I have never thanked you for the amount of work you put into these videos. So lets fix that now. Thanks! It is extremely easy to turn viewers off with even a tiny bit of condescension, pretentiousness, and arrogance, and I can tell (lol even that sounds arrogant as if I'm some sort of judge of JUDGYNESSSS lol) that you put a lot of work into making content with lots of comedic and practical value without turning people off as being a know-it-all. Your editing time-lines must be insane and I would love to know how the heck you put this much stuff into one video without losing your mind and taking a whole year to finish one video lol... Not sure if any of that makes any sense but in the spirit of this video, I just wanted to give you a compliment that makes sense to me as a content creator that loves and learns a lot from your style of humor as well as your general "dont take yourself too seriously" delivery style and tries to emulate it. We prolly disagree about a lot of things, but that doesn't mean that I can't compliment you and that you haven't helped me expand my mind creatively and that I wouldn't benefit from learning from you: a guy from Wisconsin (i think), who has, in my opinion, worked 13 or whatever years to get a PHd that no-one thought existed in youtube video creation with a dissertation entitled "wheezywaiter: creating humor and helpful content from asthma, eagle punching, random-ideas-floating-around-in-everyone's-head-but-nobody-thought-before-was-funny and a thousands (plural) (superior grammar knowledge insertion with parenthesis lol) videos. Guess I say all of this to say that you're extremely creative but also must be an EXTREMELY hard worker...unless you just outsource your editing overseas, in which case, please pass these compliments to the probably overworked and underpaid Indian or Filipino editor you work with. Anyway, sorry this is long. I rarely comment on any videos and I prolly should have just emailed this but I'm too far in to turn back now and ive gotta get back to studying lol.....youtube comments in general usually just remind me of cringy yelling and negativity that helps no one but somehow angers everyone, so hope this is encouraging. It was meant to be :)

I heard this advice a while back ago: if you’re complimenting someone you don’t know well, compliment their taste, not their body. So, “your sweater is so fun!” Or “I love Stephen King, too!” and NOT “your eyes are like the darkest of chocolates” or “ooh, your skin is so soft.” You can stretch and merge them with people you know a little better (“I like your haircut”).

You reminded me that I stopped doing that… it is better to do it. Can you do a video on why I stopped? It was kids, they screwed all my patterns - but they make me so happy. Ah I try this one once in a while and fail to do it regularly. Becasue deep down I know complimenting people results in better things happening. But I always seem to focus on flaws or some realism thing. And its like "I will always be complimenting the same things about my partner" for example, because there are things I like. I tell her but then I think "ok I complimented her on [insert thing] already dozens of times. Why say it again, it must bore her" And it does feel weird to compliment strangers. Because I always wonder what they would think about me. Probably think I was a creep. Great video!

What I love about this channel is how much you highlight your own life in an interesting way. You really take the time to show us the people you appreciate - your wife, your parents, and your friends who aren't even shown on screen. That makes it feel a lot more human than it would be if you did a different kind of video, which is something really refreshing. Also your videos have good lighting.

I've dealt with a lot of negative internal thoughts, and have worked hard to not show that negativity around other people (cos super negative people drive me insane), so I always try and look at this with a positive spin. And Ive found that it makes my internal thoughts more positive naturaly (im not forcing myself to be positive), which kinda sounds how you are going with the compliments - finding more stuff to compliment people about. Great video, really loving your monthly challenge things!
