I've watched this series so many times since it first came out, and this is one of my favorite videos - all because of the wonderful lady that gave you a lift and tour. She has a great personality. Please, please if you are ever back in Wales try to look her up and put her in more videos!!! -And nice lady, if you are reading this, if you ever come to Texas we would love to give you a tour - and I promise WE will learn your name!

Geoff and Vicki are correct about Ty Glas and Birchgrove being the shortest distance between stations (340 yards according to Google Earth) The journey times between some of the stations in London may be less than 58 seconds due to electric trains having far quicker acceleration than the class 143s which were on the Coryton line at the time

Oxford road to Deansgate is timetabled as 30 seconds (but not the other way) - only one I can see at a quick glance and only with a class 350. Glasgow central low level to argyle street is timetabled as 1min so worth checking. Although both might be physically further than ty glas and birchgrove
@tomporter837 жыл бұрын
After a bit of research a definitive answer - SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN STATIONS (based on actually railway geogrpahy): Canada Water to Rotherhithe - 200metres Rotherhithe to Wapping - 310m Ty Glas to Birhgrove - 342m Blackfriars to City Thameslink - 402m Argyle St to Glasgow Central - 563m Deansgate to Oxford Road - 564m The shortest in terms of time is as previously mentioned Oxford Rd to Deansgate on a Cl350 - 30 seconds.

Wow, those were lovely mountain views. Also, @AllTheStations, The bit of track where that crossing was that leads to the buffer is probably a head shunt. If you, per say, had some carriages you needed to connect the other end of a locomotive to, you could pull into the head shunt, switch the points, and reverse out and get to the other side of the train. Thought you might like to know :).

its actually Lockerbie to Kirknewton (but you cant travel on a direct service between the 2). This avoids Carstairs by taking the curve south of the station. However, as a stopping service then Lockerbie to Carstairs is the longest

The buffers at the top of Treherbert are used every night and morning. The sidings are used as a depot. They store a few units over night as the trip from Cardiff canton TMD takes a while. They keep one for the Merythr line, aberdare line and of course Treherbert. I know this as i live a few stops down, Tonypandy.
@bartvandewalle42537 жыл бұрын
I would have thought they were for when a pulled train needs the locomotive to change sides. There might not be one very often, most are of course DMUs, but this set up at least allows it.

Aberdare line was Beechinged 1964 + reopened 1988, shortly after the miners' strike. I remember taking the first day of experimental pre-Christmas Saturday service they ran in 1984, actually during the strike, when starting to think of reopening. So now we know: when the Cynon valley still had the mines, its jobs were local + the passenger trains stayed gone, then they returned in the post-mining era that was supposed to be worse ! when there was a new commuter demand for them.
