You're spot on about it taking a certain type of person for astrophotography, personally, there is such an intense feeling when I get to spend so much time shooting and glimpse into parts of the universe that I can only see through the process of astrophotography. It is so foreign and exciting but in a very very different way to "earth bound" photography lol where it's less of a feeling of discovery and wonder and more about expressing creativity with things you can already see. Both are amazing feelings but not immediately sharable feelings across the board. Great vid guys.

Thanks for the feature! I am sure glad the community rated my photo so high otherwise Lee wouldn't have selected it. Haha.

As someone who submitted similar astrophogoraphy to the critique, it's difficult for non astrophotographers to critique these because you just dont know what to look for unless you've been around it a while. Star shapes, accurate star colors, saturation balancing of the nebulosity, sharpness of fine details etc are all important to look for but really what you guys have probably never seen is the insane editing software that we're using to capture these images. Normally these are shot monochrome with RGB (sometimes more) filters or in the critiqued image's case narrowband filters. They are then combined in software called Pixinsight which is about the least user friendly and most scientific type of photo editing you can get into. It's both an art and a science at the same time which is what makes it so difficult to pull off well. The most amazing part of it is the fact that many of these objects are thousands or millions of light years from earth so when you see a galaxy 50 million light years away, you're seeing it as it looked 50 million years ago, literally seeing back in time. Just thought I'd add some context since you've probbaly never been exposed to this type of thing

well this would be the wrong place to submit deep astro photo for critique, as it's about 10 % photography, 90% technical data manipulation. the only photography part about astrophotography is snapping photos with your camera/mod sensor......the rest is all data processing.
@ScdouglasКүн бұрын
@phatrix111 of course, only so much you can do photography-wise when a 20 hour exposure looks literally just black in its linear state. There are of course still crossovers though that make it more photography-like. How you balance the different color channels, end saturation/sharpness/framing etc are all just normal photography decisions. The methods to get there though are obviously much different than Lee or Patrick have ever experienced.

Hummingbirds: put masking tape over all the feeding ports you DON'T want them to use, set up your camera on a tripod, make sure have your speed high enough to freeze the wings, then wait. I got lots of great shots in a couple hours.

18:15 Positive Patrick goes from 4s to immediately dumping on a photo spending the most time talking about all the things he doesn't like and then not even giving/showing a rating. 😮😂

Great selection! Hilarious commentary on the last photo. Not my number 1 by any means, but there's something to be said if it invoked such a profound analysis from Patrick haha. Had been a while since I last watched the critiques (I'm not even a photographer... architect), but always a good show.

Overall the images chosen were great, especially since there were a lot of great images to chose from and I agree with both of your ratings. But for the last image I lean more towards Patrick's observations, the image was well taken and lit and the location is great it's just something about the hat and the outfit seems dissonant, but hey Lee liked it and I imagine there are a lot of others who also like it. Great critique guys👍👍😎 The girl with the fur hat could be in the next contest for Best Winter Photographs❤

At 22:35, these "houses" are typical in Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland. Typically they are spread around hilly pasture land and they are made to keep agricultural machinery, or hay. Not made for the pictures ;-)

Great critique! Just to clarify 18:33 the northern lights picture is a panorama (two rows of 8 pics on each). It was not taken with a fish eye and the curve that you see is a combination of the panorama effect plus the end of the fjord (which is curved, too). The photo has a good description on your website that would have helped you out to understand the work behind it better, I guess you missed it :-(

Have you seen the camera he is talking about? I has no buttons, no LCD screen, no autofocus, and requires using it through an app. It wasn’t easy getting perfect footage in the studio let alone out on location with a moving bird. -P

Yes easy with my camera gear, not so with the one he was using

@@FStoppers It is difficult with a camera that is slow. But compared to some other birds hummingbirds at a feeder tend to be almost tame and they frequently standing still for a few seconds, which is when shots are easy. Similar to dragonflys in that.
