I just did the same exact thing to our home. We wanted to build a new house in the same place. It was hard to tear down the place where our kids grew up, but now, where the new house is almost complete, it was the right thing to do. As far as salvaging materials, as many here have pointed out, it just was not practical for the time to surgically remove items and where to store them. We did contact Habitat for Humanity, but they would only receive items and would not come to pick things up even if they were all neatly stacked. That pretty much cinched the deal and we went for a full demo since getting the new house under construction was the main goal.

To what extent does it make sense to separate out different materials as you demolish the building, like metals? Or do these get separated if/when the debris is shredded at some other location?
@legohead6
@legohead6 Жыл бұрын
Cost of disposal is the primary determining factor. Scrap metal has value and is usually sold to a scrap dealer. Mixed demolition waste is very expensive to dispose of. Paying demolition waste rates to get rid of valuable steel doesn't make sense, so the easy to pick or significant chunks of steel are always plucked out. Most demolition companies don't process their waste any further then they do on site. Typically a third party waste removal company will be hired to remove and dispose of the waste from the site (what they do with after that is a whole other discussion). Some demolition companies will spend more time tearing down the building and more thoroughly sorting the debris as they go(concrete/brick, Wood, Metals, etc). More common on very large building demolitions where the disposal cost to just send it all mixed would be astronomical. Some even go as far as deconstructing certain parts of the buildings and saving things like windows, doors, fixtures, etc to resale or donate. Its ultimately a numbers game for the owner and/or demolition company.

Here in the Netherlands it works very differently. All usable materials are first neatly removed. Then controlled demolition and sorting all materials for recycling. Just wondering if you have done any banks and if the process is different? Assuming they would be reinforced with extra layers of protection from fire or forced entry.

What i do not understand is You've got a 30 year old building in good usable shape being demolished yet you look around and old 1950s gas stations in really bad shape still stand. Part of the permit possess should be evaluating a structures usefulness regardless of its area. That could have been used for other stuff like a doctors office or a dentists or even daycare. Whats going back in its place? Whats the value to the local area as is or replaced? Same holds true for building permits.

Maybe the owner needs something different. All this hand wringing about a 30 year old building

Sometimes the land under a building is (or becomes) way more valuable than the building. Someone buys the property for, say, an office building. Clearing off a 30-year old convenience store is a minor expense. Moving or parting out the building isn't cost-efficient. So... demolition. It's a shame, but it's the reality.

It is so weird seeing this with a European lens. Landfills have been outlawed here 25 years ago. So everything needs to be sorted and recycled. You can still get a dumpster/container for "mixed waste", but it is something like 10 times the price, since someone has to manually dig thru it all and sort it later. Here this building would have been stripped of everything inside. Even wires and plumbing removed from the walls. All windows and doors would have to be removed first too. And the demolishing would only be an empty shell of mostly only one material.

Must have had a mouse they found a BIG CAT to et rid of it!! This is why they don't allow pets in the stores, just look at what that CAT did to the place!!! LOL Just having a little fun with you all. It would be nice to see what you see from the excavator and hear your thoughts on how it's going or what the next move will be.

I'm kind of amazed at how easily this building came apart. The first bites out of the front seemed to have collapsed the whole thing. Almost kind of scary that it came apart that quickly. I was amazed at how much space the "managers office" used. Looks like theyd have used it for more retail space. I collect old phone systems and would have loved ripping out the CCTV stuff, and maybe some of the electrical. Great video. Loved the opening; going in for a final tour!
