Both of my parents grew up in Cincinnati a very long time ago, but these foods were all rocking then! I still make my mom's Cincinnati chili and people always ask for the recipe. My mom's recipe does have allspice, cinnamon, sugar, apple cider vinegar and cocoa in it, and chili powder of course. She had a recipe in her folder that my dad says was given to him by the owner of one of Cincinnati's Greek restaurants that originated the sweet chili. It's way too hard to make, so I always make my mom's simplified version. Cincinnati food is such a treasure. My aunt never made the trek from Kentucky to Virginia without a block of frozen goetta in her suitcase. Now I want some! This is really memory lane for me, I was born across the river from Cincinnati in the 1950's.

If you venture any farther south in Kentucky, there is so much to see and do, even with Covid19. The Red River Gorge area is perfect for hiking, and the views are like no where else. While in the area, you should try Ruth Hunt's cream candy--plain and chocolate covered. There is a store in Lexington, but their factory and main store is about 30 miles east, in Mount Sterling. Ruth Hunt's also has a candy bar, the Blue Monday, which is the official candy of the Kentucky Derby.

I've run that one. Be ready for the hills - first 9 miles felt like they were all up hill when I did it - at that point you are maybe near the viewpoint where they stopped to look out over the city. (Course could have changed). The last part was in full sun so if it's a warm day that's hard too. But the race is awesome. In addition to normal water stops there are all kinds of food stops, some of which weren't so appealing to me as the miles went on.

I think most candy shops make some variation of the buckeyes. Where I'm from in Michigan we call them chocolate dipped peanut butter balls. I run a Christmas craft show and have two ladies who will sell about a thousand of these. They only sell them by a 3-pack for $2. My mom always made enough chili to have some leftover so she could make chili mac the next day. Of course, it had beans and onions already cooked into it. She boiled and drained regular ole elbow macaroni, added in the heated chili. Might add another can of stewed tomatoes if needed then we topped with raw onion if wanted and lots and of cheese. mmm mmm good
